+1 a R rated horror film direction would be great but thet are gonna tame it down so they can make lots of money off kids, and it wont turn out to good that way, horror direction is the wat to go on thos one, since one of the darker/scarier villians

A lot of people want a Venom movie. Makes sense, I guess; he’s fanged, evil, oozing, looks great on screen. While villains that are so specifically the mirror image of a hero don’t do a lot for me, I see why people like the character. Sony likes the character because anything that can spin off from the success of Spider-Man is a good thing. The studio has been looking into making a Venom flick for a while, and they’ve now got a new draft in hand from the current writers. Where does that leave the movie?

Sci-Fi Wire talked to Zombieland co-writer Paul Wernick, who with his Zombieland writing partner Rhett Reese has been working on a new version of Venom for Sony. “We’ve written two drafts of Venom, and the studio has it, and they’re pushing forward in whatever ways they push forward,” Wernick tells the site. Doesn’t seem like there’s any way this can move forward before Spider-Man 4, but if nothing else let’s hope that Sony is looking to emulate the work going on over at Marvel Studios. If Sony is smart, they’re looking at Spidey 4 and Venom as connected, complimentary movies; whichever comes first should have repercussions in the other film.

But what story do you write for Venom? As Peter mentioned when he covered the potential spin-off ages ago, I never saw much reason to read solo Venom stories. I like the idea of a big studio comic book movie based around a villain, but unless Venom starts to act like Spider-Man, there are only so many stories to write without bringing in the actual hero. Aside from Eddie Brock, the version of the character seen in Spider-Man 3, there’s Scorpion, who later became a host for the alien parasite that creates Venom. Telling his story would be interesting, but again, how to do it without bringing in Spider-Man, in which case you’ve no longer got a spin-off?

Whatever disinterest I have in the character is balanced by curiosity about Wernick and Reese. They’ve done stuff I’d just as soon forget (The Joe Schmo Show) but every creative talent can develop, and I had a great time with Zombieland. Granted, some of what I like about the film is that it is brief (88 minutes) and direct; about 45 minutes of material was chopped. It could have all been crap, but given the quality of the rest of the film, I’d be surprised. I’m really curious to know what they’ve come up with for this script, so any moles at Sony are welcome to sent it my way.

This is wrong.

Spider-man's film version of Venom is majorly bungled. If they do a Venom "solo" movie it needs to be NOT connected to the Spider-man films.

What I'd honestly like to see would be Spider-man play an incidental part in the origin story, but not have a large impact on the overall story. Spider-man should appear but not be seen sympathetically. Maybe they could even take it far enough where the audience could accept Spider-man as the "villain".

Maybe they could even retcon it and erase the Venom story from Spider-man 3, and make Spider-man 4 be sort of a spin-off from the Venom solo movie... in other words, use it as an opportunity to reset some things that may have gone wrong in the films so far.

A Venom solo picture could also be a justified case of using Carnage to his maximum potential, going for a violent R rating overall while still having it be a part of the Spider-man film world. Because we all know there isn't a chance in hell of seeing an R rated Spider-man film.

If they are smart they will make him a good guy, even if he starts out as a bad guy.Venom is very popular so as a good guy he could make alot of money. As just a evil baddy not so much.

I'm still partial to the "horror" style idea for the movie with him as the bad guy obviously.

It could still be horror and he could start out bad , but if he is just bad all the way whats the point. He needs to end up good then there could be lots of spinoffs.

So you don't think people would go and see the movie for him being the bad guy?

There are plenty of movies that people go see for the bad guys (and most of them are horror).

I think it could work.

But that is probably not the idea they went with, guess we'll have to wait and see.

I think it could work to some people would go see it with venom as a bad guy but i think alot more would go see it if he was a good guy. Also properties like venom dont come around every day so they should make him as popular as they can.Venom really has alot going for him except for the weekness to sound, they should find a way to weed that out then he would be unstoppable.

Sony has been developing a Marvel Comics spin-off of the Spider-Man villain Venom for some time now, but I never actually believed it would happen. Screenwriting team Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese had written two drafts on the character before moving on to Zombieland. And before Wernick/Reese, the company had previously commissioned Jacob Estes (Mean Creek) to pen a take. It seemed like one of those projects that was just doomed to development heck. Apparently not…

But BFDealMemo has learned that Sony is talks with Spider-Man 4 scribe Gary Ross to rewrite the script and possibly even direct the Venom spin-off. Ross plans to begin the rewrite as soon as he finishes up work on Spidey 4. I enjoyed the hell out of Zombieland, and was actually really interested to see Wernick/Reese’s version. At the same time, I’m also interested to see what Ross will bring to the table. Ross’ screenwriting credits include Big, Mr. Baseball, Dave, Lassie, as well as his two-directorial efforts Pleasentville and Seabiscuit.

Even though the character appeared in Spider-Man 3 with actor Topher Grace playing his human counterpart, the intention is to completely reboot the character in this spin-off. And I think hiring someone other than Topher for the role is a smart move as they really need to do everything they can to differentiate the spin-off from what many believe to be a lackluster third film.

When I was younger, and had more time to read comics, Venom was one of my favorites. But never once did I actually buy an issue of the Venom spin-off series, because I never thought it would be that interesting. And my thoughts are virtually the same on a Venom spin-off film. Venom is one of those baddies who is only as interesting as his opponent. And I’m pretty sure this project would be Spidey-free.

Sony has announced a May 6th 2011 release date for the fourth installment of the Spider-Man series. No word on if the Venom film would somehow be related or connected to that fourth story. Heatvision reports that the studio had no comment on Grace’s involvement nor on Ross writing the project.

Gary Ross is a screen writer for Spiderman 4 so the Venom Spinoff should be a little bit related to the film. I hope they choose a different actor to play venom. It would be awesome to see Sam Worthington play the role of eddie brock/venom.

The folks over at The Playlist have an interesting exclusive on a topic that’s been getting several headlines this week. According to their inside source, Gary Ross, the man who was just announced to write and possibly direct the Venom spinoff will not be working on that project next.

Instead, Ross will first be taking over the Matt Helm project from Steven Spielberg and it sounds like the Venom project is quite a ways off, despite earlier reports that had him starting on it after Spider-Man 4.

Matt Helm was a James Bond-esque franchise starring Dean Martin back in the 1960s and they’ve been trying to get a remake off the ground for a while with a messy development history in recent years. There was also a TV series in the 1970s also based on the novels written by Donald Hamilton. There are 27 books in the series, allowing for wide selection of material for the movie and possible sequels.

Who will star in the Matt Helm movie that’s hoped to spawn a new franchise? Well, after George Clooney passed and John Hamm fell through, it now sounds like Bradley Cooper (The Hangover) is the leading candidate. This role would certainly replace the missed opportunity of the growing star not getting cast as the lead in Green Lantern. With this role and The A-Team, Cooper could be one of the next big action stars.

If this all goes according to the reported plan, Venom won’t be around for a while, so how will Venom tie into the Spider-Man franchise?

Will it completely run its own course with no cross-over? I doubt it. The studio will want to use every available resource to make sure they bank as much coin as possible from the symbiotic anti-hero. Since the character of Venom has far less mass appeal than Spider-Man and since Gary Ross is involved in the scripts for both films, it’s fair to assume they will tie it into one of the Spider-Man films.

My guess is that since we know Spider-Man 5 & 6 are desired by Sony Pictures to speed into production after Spider-Man 4, and since Venom is not next up on Ross’ plate, perhaps the post-Spidey 4 interconnected films will act as a franchise reboot where they can have another chance at introducing the character, leading him into his own spin-off. After all, we reported yesterday that Raimi hinted that they’re not selecting Spider-Man 4 villains based on its previous movies or based on what spinoffs are in planning.

What do you make of news and how do you think Venom will fit into the Spider-Man world?

More as we hear it on all of these projects, at Screen Rant!

Sony Pictures Announces Spider-Man Spinoffs Venom and Sinister Six!
Quote:
In a move said "to forge a new legacy in the story of Peter Parker on screen," Sony Pictures Entertainment announced today that they will, in association with Marvel Entertainment, develop several new projects in the Spider-Man franchise, with Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner, Ed Solomon, and Drew Goddard to collaborate on overseeing the developing story over several films that will be produced by Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach.

The five writers, along with the two producers and Marc Webb, have formed a franchise brain trust to expand the universe for the brand and to develop a continuous tone and thread throughout the films. Under the deals, the studio announced that Kurtzman & Orci & Pinkner are writing the screenplay for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, which the studio hopes Webb will return to direct. That film will go into production next fall for release on June 10, 2016. In addition, the team will build on the cinematic foundation laid by Webb, Arad, and Tolmach in the first two movies. They will expand the franchise with Kurtzman & Orci & Solomon writing the screenplay for Venom, which Kurtzman will direct. Goddard, then, will write with an eye to direct, The Sinister Six, focusing on the villains in the franchise. Hannah Minghella and Rachel O’Connor will oversee the development and production of these films for the studio.

Sinister six most likely but it seems that a Venom solo movie will never get made according to past Venom updates in this thread.

God, get someone good to write it instead of those 2.

I am leary we will ever see a solo Vemon movie either but I am not sure I want to. You want to see him being the bad guy which makes him good against Spiderman. On his own, either they will try to make him a good guy or you get generic good guy #2 to fight him and neither are appealing.

Spiderman has to be featured in this movie.. I don't see how a solo villain movie would work without the main hero that fights him.. Watch Disney announce a Loki movie now that this just got announced

I'm beginning to think that superhero films are quite dead already. I have zero interest in this, and I'm a Marvel fan since '68 or so.

I didn't like IM3. Hated it, really.

Couldn't bring myself to pay to see Thor 2. Just doesn't look interesting enough; I'll wait for Netflix or cable.

A Venom film? Are these people on serious dope or what?!?
