They can see the difference, but just don't care enough to go out of their to watch something in HD.

Can't believe she said that. Wow. My wife really doesn't care as long as she can watch the movies I buy and she can play it on my system easily. Gotta love the Harmony remotes. My family came up couple months ago and they were impressed with the Dark Knight and commented on how good the IMAX scenes were after I explained the switching ratios. However, i have never gotten that omg moment from anyone of my family. They don't know what they are missing. Suckers.

Yeah, haha, my mom is silly, but like I said, my wife, who has essentially the exact same taste in movies as me, loves Blu-ray. Whenever we watch a DVD she remarks how blurry it is.

Now when we see a great-looking movie, Speed Racer comes to mind, she says, man, that's gonna look great on Blu-ray.

She's gung-ho on it.

Yeah they can see the difference but for some reason they think it's the big flat screen doing all the work. I've shown my mom walle, dark knight,...But she still goes out and buys DVDs. I don't know. We can can be at home watching CNN on regular 480p cable and she'd start talkin about how clear the TV is. What????????????. The TV is good but you can do a lot more with HD but people juts cant tell the Difference. So i bite my tongue when i hear people praise HD when it's really SD ( my mom)

My Dad surprised me, the first time I put a Blu Ray on for him 'Wild Hogs', and he commented on how much sharper the picture was and how much more vibrant the colour was. I didn't expect him to see the difference.

I think the more you watch in Hi Definition, the bigger a drop down it is to watch a regular DVD. You don't notice it so much on your first few titles when you're still watching a lot of DVD's. Once your Blu Ray's start outnumbering your DVD's, it becomes quite disappointing when you go back to a DVD.

I was watching Earth last night, the movie version of Planet Earth, and I remember the scenes of the birds flocking being horribly pixellated on the DVD, but they look fantastic on the Blu Ray.

A lot of older people pretending to see clarity because of the "flat screen" is a pretty common thing, I've noticed. Oh well. As long as BD sales keep going up, I'm happy.

Also, my parents have their television so damn far away that they won't see it half the time. When they come to my house for Thanksgiving this year, I'll put on a demo.

Thumbs up

Hairspray. My family was absolutely floored. Of course, they bought one of the first Mitsubishi DLPs for around $8,000, so they fully appreciate the beauty of high definition.

I watched I Am Legend, the first Blu-Ray I watched and I was like;

Wow...

I was just in amazement by how clear the picture was.

Initially my wife couldn't tell the difference. Her first experience was King Kong on HD-DVD. But now she is pointing out decent Blu-ray transfers from demo worthy transfers. Her sister and brother in law are in love with my XBR6 but will not upgrade their 19" tube tv even though their living room is perfectly suited for a home theater setup. Everytime I go to an electronics store I have to fight the urge to buy them a new tv and blu player.

I was the one that was blown away how good blu ray movies looked. I think the first movie was Wall-E back in November that swept me off my feet. Although my Sony is 1080i, the pic was just amazing!

I can't really remember what my first Blu was being my first Blu was here before a player was. But I do remember what the first Blu was that mymother saw with me. I had just watched I am Legend on reg DVD, and about a week later I asked her if shed like to rewatch it on blu. Her reaction was sure, (I'm an only child so she likes to indulge me) And literally within 5 minutes of watching it her jaw droppped. Especisally at the end of the movie where it show the back drop of the trees in the fal time. After asking her what she thought she just couldn't believe how vivid, and color, and clarity the picture was. She said she felt like she could reach for trees and actualy touch them.. I ws impressed wiht that.

Then my family rented "a bee movie" And immeditaly I was impressed wiht anime or what ever that is clissified as. and her jaw dropped at the detail you could see in everything. I must admit even when I was carton type movies I'm stil blown away by Blu.

Actually, the first HD movie I had was on HD-DVD. When my wife seen it, of course women can't understand why us Video and audiophiles love these things. I was, of course, salivating and in a trance. She watches her movies on a separate TV in the bedroom....lol. I have my Man-Cave...in the living room...LMAO

My wife was impressed and pleasently surprised by the increase in PQ. It did take her a while to really hear the improvement in AQ. But of course, it took some legitimate speakers for her to hear this difference. But once she did, she was impressed with the crispness of the sound from the fronts and the ambient noises that were audible in our blu's that she said she never heard before from our surrounds/rears.

Same case here. My bro-in-law just bought a new 42" Hitachi plasma (well, it is not the greatest, but at least it is good enough for HD) and a decent home theater system; still he wouldn't upgrade to Blu. It is not like he doesn't have the money, rather he just doesn't care for PQ and AQ for some strange reasons... Oh, and on that, don't even get me started on his wife. She can totally accept VideoCd quality garbage!!! I guess we just don't understand those kind of people...

well our 1st movie was Iron Man
we watched about half of it, then POP the ps3 blu ray laser went out
so off to blockbuster i immediatly went to get the reg dvd of iron Man (i only did this to see the picture difference as we had just watched 1 hour 10 minutes of blu ray)

well my wife was like 'this dvd looks like shit....its all fuzzy and doesnt sound as crisp'
that alone let me know it was worth it

to be honest, i dont think she noticed a difference when the first half on blu-ray was on. she didnt really see anything like 'wow' to her.
but once she saw that reg dvd she knew it was worth it.

the AQ is what i like. everything is very distinct & crisp. dolby digital seems very mudded out.

if anyone wants to know the difference from blu to dvd theres 2 choices

1st = the easiest......
watch tv on a reg channel then switch to an HD channel. the difference is night & day, and you this situation as a difference of what to expect

that doesnt always work as people like to make ezcuses for nothing

2nd option is tried & true

rent 2 versions of the movie blu & dvd
then do what i did, though mine was unwillingly...........stop the movie (blu) half way and remember the time/chapter
then pop in the rg dvd and continue the movie until the end.
within 5 minutes you should hear people yelling at you to pop the blu back in.

people who have never seen blu do NOT seem to appreciate it as by the time they see the blu THEN go home to watch the dvd....they dont remember exactly how good the blu looked/sounded
a simple 'on the spot' comparison will convert everyone.

i have a couple of movies i double dipped on....300, american gangster, casino, training day.......and i do this all the time with my wife (stop & swap) so i can hear her yell at me (im also trying to convince her we 'need a blu ray player' in the bedroom!)

her mother & father came over and i did it (stop & swap) for them.....the next week they had a blu-ray player

My brother gave a big 'wow' when we watched the opening of The Dark Knight. He wanted to see that one several times, before we saw the entire movie . My mom was pretty impressed as well when I showed a bit of Planet Earth. She thought Wall-E looked great as well.
The rest of the family and friends, not so much. I get comments like 'it looks great!' when I show them cable on the tv. And that honestly looks like crap. I wanted to show Blu-Ray as well, but that apparently wasn't needed. So either they're just being polite or they're very easily satisfied.

My Father-in-Law said it looked like a big waste of money, and only saw slight improvements (with colors/contrast, not resolution) in certain scenes......

I learned the hard way about blind-buying double-dips that day (without checking reviews etc) I'm still happy with the upgrade, but for a first movie... I could have shown him any of the the other numerous films I had..... (but he wanted to see "House of Flying Daggers" since he had it at his house, and recently watched it on DVD )
