I've seen my share of art house films, but I couldn't get into this one. I couldn't get into A Thin Red Line, either. Something about his style of filmmaking doesn't respond to me. I must say that the movie is a visual and aural treat, however.

Oh well- hopefully the BD preserves the director's vision and gives a quality presentation for those who do enjoy the film.

This came out today. Anyone pick it up yet? Would love to hear some thoughts. WB Shop sent mine out on Thursday or Friday so I should have it by tomorrow.

Definitely picking this up on the way home. Great film, even greater in extended form.

Like all movies, whether you like a film or not is based solely on subjective criteria. The four films of Terrence Malick are what I spent two full years writing my thesis on, and I can definitely understand those that think his films are boring or uninteresting. The reason I understand this is because he is, quite simply, one of the most polarizing directors of all time. He makes films in a very specific fashion, and only after watching and analyzing them for awhile does one truly understand not only the films, but the man behind them. Of course, most people do not have the patience or desire to spend the amount of time necessary to do so, which is why I will never criticize someone for not liking his films or say that someone does not understand them (that is a given, unless the requisite time is spent analyzing them).

At the same time, saying you walked out of the movie after an hour and a half and still attempting to render an opinion is baffling to me. I don't think anyone can judge a film without seeing the entire thing. It would be like reading Umberto Eco's "The Name of the Rose" and quitting less than 100 pages in (he purposely made the first 100 pages incredibly boring, so as to weed out the non-determined/serious reader). This is a film that is especially important to watch the whole thing to see what Malick's intention is. Only in the last scene of the film, with the two trees swaying side by side in the wind, is the point of the movie truly expressed.

I never walked out but I did come damn close to falling asleep. I might have actually fallen asleep at one point, I can't be sure. I might still BE in that theater asleep because the movie is STILL GOING!

I would really like to see some of the scenic shots in HD though...it sure was pretty.

I'm also anxious to hear any thoughts users who've seen the Blu-ray have. Mine was shipped from Amazon this morning and is expected to arrive on Friday, so -- unfortunately -- I have a few days to wait.

I'd actually like to know this. The soundtrack (what's on CD, not what's in the film... though what's in the film is excelent as well) is incredibly beautiful and James Horner hit this one out of the park. A very original score from a person who seems to only be able to copy his other stuff.

As someone who has heard literally every score Horner has ever written, as well as owns everything he's ever released, I laugh at that kind of comment because it's so off the mark it's just funny whenever I hear it now, whereas I used to be offended by that kind of thing.

When you hear the theme from Enemy At The Gates playing in The Perfect Storm, it kinda makes you realize what the composer does. Don't get me wrong, I still love his scores. But he does have "themes" that he uses multiple times in different scores. But really that kind of seemed to start after about 1995-ish.

Check out Hard To Starboard from that boat movie and also Al Bathra/Main Title from Courage Under Fire. I'm sure they're identical because Cammeron used Courage Under Fire as a temp score for Titanic, so I don't really blame Horner for it... but still.

DVDBeaver review indicates this is region-free. Looks great, can't wait to check out the extended cut!

I was also pleasantly surprised to learn that New World was scored by Horner (in amongst the classical stuff, much to Horner's chagrin IIRC). I love his work, I really do, but he's got a nasty habit of going over the same ground.

There's a haunting cue from Aliens (or something that sounds just like it) that plays while Jack Ryan is sitting at a desk in Clear And Present Danger, and it doesn't quite have the same effect.

Braveheart, Apollo 13 and Titanic all share a very similar sound, and boy, do those steel drums get a workout in Commando and 48 Hrs.

Regardless, the BD of New World is shaping up nicely, can't wait.

Some trivia,a big GOOF in the film, in one of the England scenes in the distance you can actually see automobiles travelling on a motorway or road , isn't this film set in the 1600's?!

Was the extended cut made by Malick or was it just put together by the studio?

You're telling me stuff I already know and am more than well aware of, and while I said nothing about whether its good or bad I look at everything he's done, from Battle Beyond The Stars to The Spiderwick Chronicles, and I know full well he does a hell of a lot more than just "copy his other stuff".

Apollo 13 sounds nothing like Braveheart. As for steel drums or Uilleann pipes, instrumental criticism like that never sticks, because no one would ever say "well so and so used a guitar and a trumpet so they all sound the same". What about violins, or even an orchestra at all? Horner himself even said using such things is nothing more than a cliche, but those are the tools of the trade. You can't condemn one composer and not another for using those very tools. How many times has Goldsmith used that over-the-top brass with pounding snares underneath, or Danny Elfman's guitar / bass lines under all his action music?

Hans Zimmer....well we all know what his music sounds like, along with every "remote control" clone out there.

Thing is, these kinds of criticisms can be applied to many people, but Horner always takes the worst of it almost out of necessity.

Honestly, I doubt I would have rented this on SD DVD again. But I'm willing to give this another shot for the PQ and music alone. That speaks volume about this format IMHO, the willingness to at least do so.
