i think he's a great story teller but his writing skills aren't the best. if another writer were to rehash his original scripts, they could be stellar!!!

I can never forgive him for Jar Jar.
Jar Jar sucks hard, and GL created him, so he has to suck as well, at least a little bit.
IMO

i thought the worst part of each prequel was portman's acting. jar jar was a distant second. but lucas is a living legend of modern cinema.

You thought Jake Lloyd sucked LESS than Natalie Portman?

Not really caring, I am agnostic as to whether he sucks. But here's what I do know.

The first three Star Wars were excellent spectacles of story telling on film. Say what we will about the muppets used at the end, we got an epic story that history shows had an effect on at least 3 generations. I liked them a lot.

Following up those three films (after a couple of other films,) he wanted to show the events that led to the the first 3 films. Following up an epic story will always be daunting, but when those movies came out, they were nothing special. Neither the special effects nor the story really shook me in any meaningful way. No single character in eps 1 - 3 was as cool as Han Solo and that made a huge difference even if the action and events portrayed were vastly significant to the story line. He also had his name attached to Indy 4 which was also nothing special, practically insultingly so with how the film was essentially a parody of modern adventure tales when Indy is a pioneer of the genre.

Here's why, suck or not, that I am no longer a fan of George Lucas but I do respect him. He squeezes you for all your money. You can't get the movies you like from him on home video until he unlocks his benevolence. Why isn't any Star Wars on Blu yet except for the most recent animated stuff that most of you probably do not own? Because George doesn't have you rabidly ready to kill your own mother to get it yet. There is no good reason other than holding power over you the fans. Does this make good business sense? Absolutely. Does it foster any good will? Absolutely not. As long as the rabid fans buy it up, the cycle shall continue. When Star Wars does make it's way to BD, it will sell in huge numbers thanks to marketing, nostalgia, and the willingness of fans to buy yet another copy of Star Wars. Will the BD be superior to all the other releases? Undoubtedly, but I stopped buying Star Wars movies after the third time I bought them. He can have his genuinely, and well deserved storied franchise and catalog of mediocrity that followed. I have Netflix.

i like where you stand, raskal, and your points make very good sense. im not so much a fan of lucas anymore, but i definitely still respect him for his contributions to film--both in storytelling and technology. say what you want about the prequels...love em or absolutely hate em, it doesnt change how much he has influenced and impacted film and the society that watches it.

Back in his day, Lucas was a great filmmaker. His talents were practically unrivaled.

But somewhere along the line he lost his marbles and never recovered.

He added ugly, modern CGI to the classic Star Wars Trilogy, and didn't bother making adequate DVD remasters for the unbutchered, original theatrical cuts. How hard would it have been to remaster them and make anamorphic discs? And while we're at it, why aren't they on Blu yet?

Lucas needs to do for Star Wars what Ridley Scott did for Blade Runner with that 5-disc set with tons of bonuses and all the different cuts of the movie. Even Lucas' old friend, Francis Ford Coppola, issued Apocalypse Now with both cuts of the movie in one set via seamless branching.

Lucas just needs to get his head out of the gutter and give the people what they want. You don't get anywhere in this world by screwing people over.

I knew i was in for crap when inthe first 5 minutes of the movie Indy gets in a fridge and has a nuke dropped on him,, it then flys miles and he just gets out.
They make the villian look like a joke by having Mutt fence standing on 2 cars, getting hit in the nuts and still taking it to the villian in a sword fight, and if thats not enough you got George of the jungle vine swinging going one. And i dont mind that aliens were envolved alot of people hated that.

There was never a Crystall Skull in National Treasure.

Try again later.

He's screwing people over, really? I don't see that at all, guys. He didn't HAVE to make these movies. He didn't have to follow them up with more movies that many of us enjoyed. He didn't have to start all those companies that changed Hollywood forever. He didn't have to redefine industry standards to give us the Hollywood we have today. Is he greedy? Undoubtedly but no one makes you re-buy his products again and again. I love Star Wars as much as anyone but I've only bought the 6 movies once.

Oh, how I wish you were right. That was just a general statement though and not really exclusively applicable to Lucas. Chances are, your superiors at work got to where they were as well as all elected leadership of all ages and generations got to where they were because they screwed people over. Those are just two examples.
