  • Ivan's Childhood
  • Au Revois Les Enfants
  • Army of Shadows
  • The Great Dictator
  • Revanche
  • Summer Hours
  • Yi Yi
  • Kuroneko
  • Onibaba
  • Andrei Rublev
  • Close-Up
  • Taste of Cherry

Any that you would recommend on must watching?
From what I've seen, I'd say Yi Yi should be your top priority. The runtime may seem off-putting (it did for me too), but you'll wish it was an hour longer once it ends. The only other titles I've seen are Au Revoir, Les Enfants, Revanche, Army of Shadows and Kuroneko. Strongly recommend the first three.

That list reminds me that I need to watch my copy of Close-Up.

Well, I'm tired of the Django praise. It doesn't deserve a thing.

See how opinions work?

I hated Les Mis, and I'm a die-hard fan of the stage show. They just butchered the film.

My sincere tip of the hat to Criterion, because my plastic case for Last Year at Marienbad arrived in the mail today, much sooner than I expected.

I saw the Criterion Collection address on the package and had no idea what it was until I realized that this had shipped so quickly.
Is it a sign of Blu-ray addiction if a package from Criterion, Amazon, or some other company arrives in the mail and you do not immediately know what is inside the package? Probably so. I dunno.

At any rate, it's nice to have. I switched the Blu-ray from the original cardboard case, carefully removed the UPC sticker from the back of the plastic case, and now have both cases stored together.

On the topic of "Not Criterion-related, but darn well should be Criterion-related", I also received my Blu-ray of Michael Haneke's Caché (Hidden) from Amazon UK.

Speaking of Amazon.uk, I placed an order - Le Silence de la Mer, The Innocents and The Boys From Brazil - last Wednesday that shipped the next day and arrived was sitting in my vestibule Tuesday afternoon.

You gotta love that.

Le Silence de la Mer is on its way to me from Amazon UK.

You're in for a real treat with The Innocents. It's a superb adaptation of the Henry James story, The Turn of the Screw, and a classic horror flick on its own terms.

I love The Innocents. I watched it a few years ago and several times since I've DVRed it and watched a third or maybe half before turning it off and declaring that this time for sure I was absolutely going to order the UK disc.

Now if somebody would just release The Haunting...

To my discredit, I never did get around to seeing Infamous. Thanks for the recommendation!

Thanks for the suggestions. I've heard nothing but great things about those titles in particular.

You're better off trying a Hulu Plus free trial (or just subscribing for a month or two).
Fair point, but apparently I have a distribution center 90 miles from me so the turn around should be quick. I'm already getting Ivan's Childhood tomorrow and I signed up less than 24 hours ago.

On top of that, I may just extend it for a few months anyway. The price each month really isn't bad.

I got my copy of Caché from an Amazon seller yesterday and the case was completely destroyed and the disc was loose. When I contacted them, the only offer I got was "$1 to replace the case."

I have to disagree here. Infamous is an interesting movie, and it definitely deserved more attention than it got, but overall I think Capote is a much better movie and the overall tone is more engaging. That's just my opinion, of course (and I say that as someone who loves Truman Capote).

Oh man, sorry to hear that. My case arrived intact, although it was shipped overseas in a thin cardboard envelope. A CD that I had ordered (New Order - Lost Sirens) was surprisingly intact as well, although it was shipped in the same envelope and had slipped all over the place. I was lucky this time around. I hope that your disc is okay.

Two of my favourites that were blind-buys.

This is now the Amazon.uk sub-thread
My UK order of Die Nibelungen, Mon Oncle, Les vacances de M. Hulot and Before the Revolution arrived today

Back to Criterion: I watched my copy of Paris, Texas the other night. First time I've seen the film in 20 years.
Did anyone else have a problem with the disc? Towards the end, my copy goes all watery and blurry and there's wet sniffing on the soundtrack

I watched this for the first time about a week ago. While my physical reaction to the movie wasn't exactly the same, I certainly did feel it emotionally. I finally understand why Paris, Texas has received so much praise in this thread - a fantastic story, well told and incredibly filmed.

Two nights ago, I watched Phantom Carriage and was again blown away. I was amazed by the narrative structure, the quality of the acting and certainly the quality of the picture given it's age. I really need to pick up Stagecoach now...

Huh...it always takes my orders 2 weeks to get here, always past the estimated arrival date (and I'm in NJ).

I pretty much watch them within the same week I buy them. Only 4 got held back recently, World on a Wire, Godzilla, Walkabout, Modern Times. All blind buys and still haven't watched them yet.
