I usually do, too..except for some that randomly slip through sometimes. I've watched most of mine from the last few months fairly instantly, but some, like Brazil currently, just sit and wait and I'm never in the mood to visit (never even seen it)

Sorry to ask a pleb question, but has anyone else had problems recently with the shrinkwrap on their Criterions?

I bought a whole slew of titles recently, and the great majority of them have arrived looking like someone cranked up the heat gauge on the shrinkwrap machine way too high. The shrinkwrap is too tight, and the soft surface of the pocket the slick sits in on the outside of the case has been shrunk and puckered. It's arguably only cosmetic, but in most of these the shrinkwrap has been burnt down the spine so little irregular bits of plastic cling to the spine of the case, obscuring the title, and resist being peeled off.

I don't know whether it's Amazon or Criterion I need to turn to, but my e.mail to Criterion has gone unanswered and (as I understand it) they don't ship directly to Australia anyway.

Can anyone offer any suggestions, please?

Hey Mac!
Yep, i had trouble too and this is the response from Jon:

We sell the clear Blu-ray cases on our website here: http://www.criterion.com/shop/other.

However, if you are overseas you may purchase directly from our production office by following the instructions below:

Replacement packaging, including booklets, covers, and slip cases, are available for $5 each. This includes shipping and handling. Unfortunately, we do not offer replacement DVD cases, but both clear and black keepcases are available from online retailers such as Amazon.

Payment can be made via PayPal to store@criterion.com. Please include your name and address in the message field, along with the item(s) you are ordering, and as soon as we receive payment, we'll ship them out to you!

Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. Thank you for supporting The Criterion Collection!

Jon Mulvaney

Hope that helps

Noel Coward can be surprising. I think a lot of his stuff gets dismissed a bit unfairly as camp flummery, but films like "In Which We Serve" show that he could get to the heart of the matter and stir pride and emotions with the best of them, without resorting to overt rah-rah or sentimentality.

I already had the BFI release of Brief Encounter on Blu, but I'm still happy I splurged on the Criterion Lean/Coward set. Every disc in the box is satisfying.

I thought Capote was too bleak, and PSH didn't seem to lose himself into the role like Jones did. I thought Infamous highlighted better how much In Cold Blood changed him, and what Capote was like before he wrote the novel. I just felt that Jones was Capote, wheras Hoffman only wanted to pretend.

It's all personal opinion though. I'm also a big Capote fan.

Anyone have any interesting viewing plans this weekend? So far, I've got The Quiet Man (Olive) and D.O.A (big screen) scheduled.

Perhaps, we should just do Post-your-picture Friday.

Back to Criterion: I watched my copy of Paris, Texas the other night. First time I've seen the film in 20 years.
Did anyone else have a problem with the disc? Towards the end, my copy goes all watery and blurry and there's wet sniffing on the soundtrack
Oh...I gushed after watching it for the first time...and I remember buying it right after it was released. I can only think of a few times a film hit me that much emotionally...

I'll likely get around to "The Man Who Knew Too Much", "Ugetsu" (MoC) which I got in the mail yesterday, "The Blue Angel" (MoC) (fingers crossed that it'll come by Saturday), and the next chapter of "The Story of Film"...what a great documentary!

And there's always English Premier League on FSC.

I might revisit Aronofsky's The Fountain this weekend. Probably watch Three Colors: Blue this weekend as well. I strongly believe its the best of the trilogy and it features one of my favorite actress performances ever.

I have typically gotten Royal Mail from either Amazon UK and/or MoC/Eureka in anywhere from 5-10 days, on the average. For some reason, even though I ordered on Jan 6 (after the holiday season), Ugetsu took 17-18 days to get to me. It's either got to be a post holiday catch up by Royal Mail and/or something to do with customs.

TJS Blu got his copy of The Blue Angel from MoC yesterday and they shipped them on Jan 16...about 7 days. I hope to see mine today or Saturday...maybe the Royal Mail is getting their second wind after the holidays?

I'll never understand how some can watch movies and be on the computer at the same time.

I'm right there with you. Although, I can see Red creeping up on repeat viewings.

Actually, I also watched my copy of Phantom Carriage a few days ago.
Fantastic story!
I was really just expecting a quite simple and straight forward story, so was very surprised that it was such a cleverly layered and non-linear narrative.
I watched it with the Matti Bye score, so I'll have to go back and re-watch it soon with the KTL score.

It's a long weekend in Australia, so maybe this is my chance to watch some of the long films that are sitting there: Che, Lawrence of Arabia, Heaven's Gate, or Die Nibelungen.
I've also got a stack of other regular length films as well. Life's tough
