Quote:
Adam Driver’s Character Revealed?

According to a new rumor reported by Jedi News, that will very much be the case with actor Adam Driver (Girls, Inside Llewyn Davis) – who, if these claims are accurate, is going to be acting out the Jacen Solo/Darth Caedus storyline from the Star Wars EU literature. (Short version: Jacen, son of Han and Leia, grows up to become a Jedi who eventually falls to the dark side.)

Quote:
Sounds like Adam Driver is NOT going to play a villain…sort of. He will be playing the son of Han and Leia, and it seems he will be seduced to the Dark Side, and a main plot point for the movie will be their attempt to rescue him.
These claims are nothing that mind-blowing, seeing how Market Saw reported similar rumors months ago. Not to mention, we’ve speculated for a while now that casting Driver in Episode VII makes sense, based on the idea that his character will begin the film as a noble member of the Skywalker/Solo clan who, at least temporarily, is transformed into a Sith. Point being, for all we know this new report could just as well have been made up by someone playing the same deduction game as everyone else – as opposed to, additional confirmation about what we should expect in the new Star Wars movie trilogy.

That said: Episode VII cast member Daisy Ridley is, almost without doubt, playing Han and Leia’s daughter, who was Jacen’s twin sister Jaina in the old Star Wars EU. If the rumors about Driver are true, then it’s not a stretch to assume that Ridley’s character arc for the upcoming Star Wars film trilogy will include her attempt to bring her brother back from the Dark Side, similar to the Jaina/Jacen storyline from the EU literature. This could also account for those longtime rumors about Episode VII having a female protagonist (i.e. Ridley).

Frankly, we’re down with that idea, since the Darth Caedus storyline is among the better old EU developments that fall in line with the timeline of events in Episode VII. It also leaves plenty of room for additional surprises that those familiar with the EU mythology might not expect, starting with the claim that Episode VII cast member Max von Sydow is playing an “ancient evil” – who may even be the one responsible for turning Driver’s character to the dark side.

What do you think of these Episode VII rumors? Let us know in the comments section, below!

Makes sense, if it's true...Especially that Ford is considered the co-lead of the film. Han would be on the front line trying to stop his son from turning to the Dark Side.

I don't see family resemblance at all, if it's true, he may be a good actor but the casting fails for the look part.

I hope it's not true, and it has been officially announced that the new episodes won't have anything to do with EU.

They never said it wouldn't have anything to do with the EU. That's been a common misconception since the press release. Read this part again:

Quote:
In order to give maximum creative freedom to the filmmakers and also preserve an element of surprise and discovery for the audience, Star Wars Episodes VII-IX will not tell the same story told in the post-Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe. While the universe that readers knew is changing, it is not being discarded. Creators of new Star Wars entertainment have full access to the rich content of the Expanded Universe. For example, elements of the EU are included in Star Wars Rebels. The Inquisitor, the Imperial Security Bureau, and Sienar Fleet Systems are story elements in the new animated series, and all these ideas find their origins in roleplaying game material published in the 1980s.
As for the resemblance, it's passable enough that it would work. He doesn't have to look exactly like either parent.

That means that they can, and will, borrow from the EU. They've done it before in the prequels, so it wouldn't be surprising at all if this was the case here.

Seems clear to me, some elements (planets, supporting characters, etc) could be used but the storyline won't.

Yes, I know, but the bigger point is they can still draw from it though. It won't play out the same way, of course, but they can draw inspiration from it. That's why they're leaving the EU as a source to mine, not imitate. Because you can believe characters like Thrawn will eventually have screen presence. Han and Leia having kids makes sense, and going that route, along with what we've been hearing for a while now, makes a lot of sense. Again, they'll borrow, but change the way the story unfolds.

My understanding is that they are rebooting the expanded universe too so the past 30 years don't count anymore. Guess that was the only way to get Chewie back. So even if they use aspects of it, don't expect it to match too closely.

Exactly. I think they'll take characters, parts, maybe even some storylines, which honestly makes sense, and alter it and twist it in a way that is familiar, but different. There's big events, like the stuff with Jacen, that I think could still play out, but differently than we saw. It really doesn't matter in the end though, I suppose, as long as the movie is good, that's all that matters to me.

I read somewhere that the film will be Han and the three kids trying to find Luke who hasn't been seen in decades to fight the Sith. The Sith will destroy Tatooine with the Death Star 3 and then Han and the kids will find Luke on a near by planet that the Sith have stranded him on to make him watch them blow it up.

If that's true, then you would think the Empire would have learned their lesson with the first two and come up with something else.

Maybe they had their memories wiped by the men in black and forgot about the other two.

Yeah, I really hope there won't be a third Death Star. I mean, if the movie's good it's good, but I'd like to see something more original.

I think it would be interesting if they wrote the story to where Han and Leia never married. Man talk about a gut punch to fans everywhere. It has always been assumed that Han and Leia would marry after Jedi but other than the EU there has been no evidence to support that it would be a foregone conclusion. For one thing, assuming that Leia does go on to train to become a Jedi, wouldn't that fall under the celibacy law of the original Jedi Order? Now granted, the new Jedi Order might not adopt that same law. However just going on what we know about the Jedi and their customs, it would make perfect sense for Leia to devote her life to her Jedi training and duties and she and Han never marry each other. By that same token, Han may have never been interested in marrying Leia. He was a scoundrel, a pirate, a free spirit. Han may have decided that marriage wouldn't suit him and he broke it off with Leia at some point.

+1. I never really followed the EU stuff & don't know much about it, but did the Empire ever develop a "death star type" weapon that wasn't a death star?

You forgot about the part where Han ejects Jacen Solo from the escape pod that just happens to land on the nearby planet where the Sith stranded Luke to watch the destruction of Tatooine.

BTW, I think I'm the only one that got the joke.

I just laughed aloud at something I read over on IMDB:

I am going to wear sunglasses when I see the film. The lens flares from the lightsabers clashing are going to burn out people's retinas.

That is just an urban legend, JJ doesn't use computers to add flare to things. Oh wait, it's true.

Truth is, I don't want them to take elements of the expanded universe and twist them around so it is familiar - I want something new. It has been 30 years since we saw this universe last, I want it to have changed since then as life has happened. The one thing I actually liked about the prequels is how different the universe looked in Phantom Menace and how things slowly started to change into the universe we knew in A New Hope.
