It'll be directly through Criterion if it is in-fact true.

The more I watch older movies, the more I realize that less REALLY was more. Nowadays, there are 30 cameras everywhere with a billion different angles. It's annoying and so incredibly unnessary what they do today, evern with GOOD movies. There are so many cuts, it's like a rave party for our eyes. There's so much more power in these kinds of films...

Anyway, I need to vent about an Amazon marketplace sale I made for The Last Metro that has me incensed.

I ordered it from a very highly reviewed seller, and it was Used, but I figured used, at least it'll be somewhat decent.

Well I went to pick it up yesterday, as I'm Canadian I had to ship it to my mailbox in the states ($3 shipping versus $14)... I opened it up and was treated oh such a nice surprise.

- While it came in the Criterion case, the case was for the DVD VERSION!
- The DVD version case wasn't even close to being in good condition, it was beat to hell with major, MAJOR damage, stickers all over it, etc.
- Inside, thankfully the blu-ray was there, but it has a rental sticker covering the center hole.
- Being that it's a DVD case, there's space for 2 discs, as well as it being way too large.
- The booket inside has a sticker on the back with another something from the rental.

My biggest issue is that due to me being in Canada and shipping it to my US mailbox, it's already cost me even if they refund it, not including the time and energy to go and get it (though I mean, really, I DID have other things to pick up as well) but I get charged per delivery. So even if the seller says "Sure, send it back!" I'm out the entire process, including the extra money. The only other solution would be to buy the replacement case from Criterion, but of course I'd either have to ship it here and pay the incredibly high delivery cost, or ship it to the states, pay the delivery fee and organize another trip to pick up the replacement case, making it be far more expensive than what it would have cost to buy a new copy and have it delivered in Canada.

I've emailed the seller with the pictures and such, but I'm just really frustrated right now. This is just infurating, I knew there would be a risk buying used, but I never thought it would be THIS bad! I figure it he at least cuts the price down by at least half, MAYBE I could justify buying a replacement case, but man... I think this'll be the last "used" movie I buy... ugh.

Anyone have any suggestions, been in any similar situations?

Thanks much

Nick
Closest situation I had was when I ordered the Criterion Armageddon DVD from a seller on Amazon. It was sold as new but when I received it, the inner phamplet wasn't there. Everything else seemed new about the item. I did contact seller and they of course offered a refund but I would have to ship back to them and really the cost to send back just wasn't worth it.

Usually for used items on Amazon, they will list the condition and if it's a rental or not. If your seller didn't, I would definitely give them negative feedback. I am only willing to buy from Amazon sellers if it's in New or Like New condition.

Watched The Third Man for the first time last night. I'm just glad I really enjoyed it after paying so much for it. Love it when Orson Welles makes his first appearance.

I grabbed two Criterion Blu-rays from Barnes & Noble today.

The Battle of Algiers
Fanny and Alexander

Barnes & Noble has a great sale rack this week, and Fanny and Alexander was 30% off, in addition to my 10% off members discount. There were several other Criterions on the sale rack as well (The Red Shoes, 8 1/2, Being John Malkovich, etc.), for those who interested.

On the non-Criterion front, I also upgraded my old DVD of Chariots of Fire, because the digibook was 40% off. One of the few instances when my love of cinema and my love of running coincide. Woo hoo!

I had almost $400 from selling some DVDs during lunch break (including my DVDs of the two above Criterions), but I only spent a fraction of that money today, because I'd prefer to wait for a big 50% off sale. I gave in to temptation, though, and bought The Battle of Algiers with only my member discount, though, because I wanted that one upgraded right away. I love that movie, and I love the Ennio Morricone score.

All things considered, I prefer the 1.33:1 version.

That said, any guesses on which Columbia/Sony film will get released next? Perhaps one of these: It Happened One Night, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington or From Here to Eternity.

I just finished watching Vivre Sa Vie and it was a pretty good movie.

I liked how the film was broken up into 12 different parts that showed Nana's slow descent in prostitution after she failed at becoming an actress. It's definitely one of the toughest and most dangerous careers out there, as those who have seen the film can attest to.

[Show spoiler]I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the The Passion Of Joan Arc scene was foreshadowing what was to inevitably come, although I am not 100% certain about this. Also, the scene with the old man in the diner appeared to me as a turning point in Nana's life when she realized she didn't want to live her life this way anymore.

On a side note, is The Passion Of Joan Of Arc played out the way it was in the movie? As in the people look at each other and a white screen appears with the dialogue. I've heard great things about this movie and with the Blu-ray release hopefully coming in the not-so-distant future, I would hate to have to watch a movie like that. Regardless, I will pick it up

All-in-all, I think Vivre Sa Vie was very powerful and a good look at one woman's life. The picture and audio quality was pretty good, so for those on the fence about it, I'd recommend giving it a shot.

So the two reviews of Ballad of Narayama I have read both say there is a issue with the discs (stuttering). I've cancelled my order.

That is near the top of my list of must buys. That reminds me...I have still yet to watch Week End. Oops.

Finally got around to the Tin Drum today. What a wild film. Might be one the top 5 of the CC films I own.

I don't think I'll ever be in the mood for the food served in eating Raoul.

As far as Ballad of Narayama, I'm sure a replacement offer will be announced. I'm getting this as soon as the 50% off sale commences. If I want to physically own the film in HD, what other option do I, as a Region A viewer, have?
