Paris, Texas for the win. After revisiting this movie a few days ago on Blu-ray, I've decided that it's easily in my top five Criterions list.

By the way, I found Amelie on Blu-ray for $7.99 today. Score! So glad to upgrade this one at long last.

Yes, I too can be tempted by eye candy.
Purple Noon is a great Blu-ray!

...and the lead actress in the film is quite the beauty. Especially during a close-up near the end.

I will probably watch that or Last Year At Marienbad after this.

It's my very favorite Criterion... it's at the top of my list of favorite films ever, really...but I've already said that a bunch of times

I also found The Island on Blu-ray today. This is, by far, my favorite Michael Bay movie. (Actually, it's the only Bay film that I would bother to own.)

It's too bad that Criterion released The Rock and Armageddon, but neglected Michael Bay's one remotely cerebral film by failing to pick up The Island as a title.
Criterion could do a superb job with this film. A two-disc, with The Island on disc one, and the 1970s film, The Clonus Horror, from which The Island was based. An extensive featurette on Scarlett Johannson as well.

EDIT: Of course, I know that this will never happen, but it's a fun thought.

I can see Paris, Texas moving up to my #1 spot in due time. I was so impressed with the Blu-ray, and the experience of watching this movie went above and beyond the times that I saw it on DVD.

The emotional punch at the end is majestic.

On the other hand, it's tough to imagine any movie overtaking Le Samourai and Army of Shadows. I do love Paris, Texas more with each viewing, though.

I know! The last 25 minutes are what really made the film for me the first time I saw it...it is really my favorite 25 minutes of any film, ever....yeahhh, I've already said this too, but I just love it.

Priceless! Always thought my inability to appreciate this had to be due to a rather glaring gap in my capacity to appreciate true aesthetic sensibility. Could it be even remotely possible that the film has for decades been...over-rated?!?? Silence... punctuated by an enormous rolling thunderclap!

(Watched Remains of the Day last night~ still wonderful even in the after-glow of Downton Abbey. Surprised how good the 2001 Special Edition DVD looks, although I would up-grade to a Criterion release in a shot.)

Something oddly amusing...

When Harry Dean Stanton is watching from the roof and gets into his car, the lighting and cinematography actually resemble Repo Man.

I think the parts with the two depressed women and the spider are also parodying Bergman's "Through a Glass Darkly" and "Persona" (and speaking of Seventh Seal, let's not forget the "Death" character in Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey! I think the end scene of Monty Python's Meaning of Life may also be Bergman-inspired but it's not as obvious...)

Another funny Bergman parody from SCTV (mostly based on "Persona" I think):

Just finished Paris, Texas - wow, what a great film!

I tend to say this often, but this is one of my top Criterion films that I've seen to date. The acting was fantastic, the score was emotionally moving, and the storyline was full of adventure and surprise.

Before I saw the movie, I honestly thought it was going to take place in the desert for most of the film. I'm really glad that I was wrong. I think the message is the most important part of the entire film.

[Show spoiler]You cannot run away from your problems or the past. You can't numb yourself up with alcohol, run away, or let it go unnoticed. Nothing will change until you face it head on. In Travis's case, he ruined his marriage and ultimately left his son without a family. It was his responsibility to take blame for his past actions and mend the relationship with both his wife and his son. I think when he turned around to face Jane head on, that was the moment when Travis changed. He had been running away from his wrongful actions all of his life and in that instance, he decided to turn his life around. I would have loved for it to be a happier ending for the family, but by reuniting mother and son, it seems like Travis's work was done.

Overall, I would say this is a Criterion that should be in everyone's collection. Nastassja Kinski is beautiful, by the way.

Re-watched the Soderbergh adaptation of Solaris on DVD last night and it's still an engrossing experience, one of the most ambitious Soderbergh projects and my favorite George Clooney performance till date. I do wish Criterion could have had a double-bill blu-ray set with this and the Tarkovsky film, since Fox themselves seem wholly uninterested in releasing this. Hell, I'd gladly fork up for a limited edition Twilight Time release of this (assuming they include the commentary track, didn't care for the other extras).

Love The Tarkovsky classic, and really like the Soderbergh version (just saw Side Effects so I'm on a Soderbergh high, the first must see of 2013)

LOL, that was quite brilliant. They even got the shot compositions and the framing of the actors spot on.
