Default Help needed with Amp match up

I'm new here so please forgive me if I'm inn the wrong area. I upgraded my speakers to Energy RC70's, Energy LCR and Energy Veritas rear surrounds. I have a Denon 889 now and it sounds great as the new speakers break in however I am not sure it will be able to fully utilize the abilities of these new speakers. The towers are rated to 250watts 8-4 ohms and 95 ohms sensitivity. When I briefly turn the volume up to 0 on the Denon the speakers sound very nice but are not loud enough. Does this Denon have to power needed to push these new speakers? Its running pretty warm and I'm afraid to push it much past 0. Was told maybe to go to a receiver with 140 watts rated per channel. I listen to Blu Ray concerts mostly in 5.1 Dont have 7.1 set up.Thoughts please ? Perhaps something like a Yamaha RX-V3900?

I am not familiar with the 889, but if it has pre outs, I would look into a amp like Emotiva or something. Unless you want a AVR with more capabilities or a better Audessey etc.

Nice speakers BTW!

I wouldn't go with the Yamaha RX-V3900.
Its bench test were average.

Five channels driven continuously into 8-ohm loads:
0.1% distortion at 69.2 watts
1% distortion at 81.5 watts

Seven channels driven continuously into 8-ohm loads:
0.1% distortion at 62.9 watts
1% distortion at 68.9 watts

from: http://www.hometheater.com/content/y...-labs-measures

A receiver rated at 140W per channel/all channels driven won't be cheap...
batpig over on AVSforum Energy thread suggest higher end Denon CI models, like the Denon AVR-4311CI or AVR-4810CI.

Other receiver brands that could output 140W per channel/all channels driven, would be the higher end Onkyo, higher end Pioneer Elite, higher end Integra, higher end Nad, Arcam, Cambridge Audio, etc.

Another option would be to get an cheaper older receiver with multi channel outputs( under $400 ), then pair it with the multi channel amp of your choice( Outlaw, Emotiva, Parasound, etc. ).

I can recommend the Onkyo 3008. I love it! But again not cheap

It's too bad the Denon 889 only has a sub preout.

Most Manufacturers have removed them from their entry & mid- line receivers.

About 3 or 4 years ago, you could get a Yamaha RX-V663 or Pioneer VSX-1018AH-K with 7.1 preouts for around $400. Now some manufacturers( Harman Kardon ), don't include them on any of their receivers.

Yeah it really is a shame how much cheaper companies have got with AVRs. Cheaply made now a days on the low end stuff.

Yeah I had a Yamaha 663 and loved it. Such good bang for the buck at the time.

Thanks Guys for the reply's. Forgot to mention I'm also running a Paradigm pw2200 sub. So stupid question but if I put in a higher wattage receiver will the system be louder at 0 on volume? I have read some say that larger towers sound better with higher power to them. Will there be less likely hood of damaging the system with a more expensive higher powered receiver? Are there any new advances in these later receivers ( since the Denon 889 ,5 years old) that would improve the sound or volume? I have the 5.1 setup not interested in 7.1 but will need the ability to have outdoor speakers(paradigm stylus 470) input. Would this be a good fit? http://reviews.cnet.com/av-receivers...g=mncol;subnav Thanks

What damages a speaker is powering it well beyond its peak for long periods of time or the amp clipping causing distortion. Which usually happens when the amp is being overdriven.

that pioneer is nice, also look at the onkyo 1008/3008, or look at an onkyo 708/709 and an Emotiva xpa-3 power amp.

Even the Arcam 600 does not drive this much power according to benchmarks but wattage is not everything, the most important is current. The 600 can drive some serious speakers such as 5 B&W 800D and is 82 watts with 5 channels driven at 0.1% thd.
