You guessed right. Older, letterboxed trailers were the same way - 1.85 for the 35mm "movie footage", 1.33 for the 16mm "found footage".

There's no way a theater would have played this at 1.33, though. The majority of the film would have been, effectively, letterboxed just to "open up" for the intentionally ugly 16mm faux-documentary material. It wouldn't have made any sense.

Oh wow! Yours has worse damage then mine. That sucks.

My case is very slightly warped I think. The front cover side of the case is just a little pushed in, and the plastic protecting and holding the art is wrinkled as opposed to flat. This has happened with the Olive Films and recent Twilight Time cases I've received, where the entire case is slightly curved, instead of perfectly straight. It's like the thicker plastic cases get slightly bent out of shape in the heat when shipping or something.

Did anyone else find a good laugh with several moments in the interviews? I particularly remember Carl Yorke's story about being in the mud and some line from Ruggero Deodato in his first interview on the disc.

When I was younger I was against the animal deaths, but I only knew about them out of context and because everyone who hates this film hates it for that reason. I've changed my stance. The animals were all eaten by either the crew or the natives who treated certain species as a delicacy, so these were just merely put on film. The coatimundi is the one that may have crossed into cruelty territory, and the pig is kicked before being shot, a quick and painless death. But, in reality, we are so sheltered and animals are killed all the time, and often in terrible ways that are inhumane and difficult to watch. I've seen worse than what's in Cannibal Holocaust. Anyone who's seen Blood of the Beasts, for example, knows what I'm talking about. Sure, they're not fun to watch, but I'm not bothered by them. I don't support killing animals purely for a film, but these animals are killed in that area of the world and eaten, so if anything this film just captured that and made use of it for it's shocking and intense nature and realism. A fake monkey was even prepared for that death scene, but the natives talked the filmmakers out of it and used a real monkey because their brains are a delicacy to the natives. I view it in this way as adding to the documentary-like approach that Deodato strived for. We're humans, we're higher in the food chain, we eat animals, we just don't see what comes before that. It's a reality that only seems harsh because we're not accustomed to it. Also, these deaths are 35 years old, nothing we are going to say is going to bring them back. If it helps, this film was a major reason that films can no longer do this and animals are more protected now in a general sense. This is a film from a time where culturally this wasn't as much of an issue as it is now. Eli Roth even mentions in the included booklet how many westerns that involved stunt scenes with horses ended up with them being killed. No money paying for this Blu-ray is supporting the killing of animals, it's supporting a fantastic home video distribution company who didn't agree with censorship, and if you wish to view the film without those scenes, you may. I'm not trying to start a debate, and this issue has been beaten to death (no pun intended), but this is just how I feel.

This is exactly how I feel on the issue. Also it was a different time where laws didn't exist for this sort of thing. The film is a piece of a bygone era.

That's part of the appeal and fascination with it. This film is something that can never be reproduced. It's nice to know someone else shares my views. It seems like even everyone who loves the film still puts down the animal scenes as being done solely for filmmaking purposes (and I'm not talking about this forum necessarily, but elsewhere). I think people get really down on it because these scenes aren't in an actual documentary, which everyone would be ok with, instead these scenes are in a fictional film shown in a cinematic way, and it leads to that misconception that these animals were killed expressly for art or entertainment. The irony is that some documentaries I'm sure staged events for their film, to sensationalize the violence, which is something that Cannibal Holocaust is commenting on.

Edit: Also, it doesn't help that the documentary crew are vile inhumane scumbags, so they are seen as villains to the animals.

Just got my copy in the mail from Bull Moose! Shipped on the 9th, received on the 12th.

It was shipped in a regular padded Jiffy-Lite mailer, but (surprisingly) shipped Priority Mail. Wasn't expect that for free shipping!

^ Thanks for the caps. The shot that stood out for me was the third pic on the right side. Look that the beard on the guy to the right. It looks like a DVD compared to the US release.

If anyone is looking to pick this up in-store, it looks like some MovieStop locations may be starting to stock this. I read here a bit back about copies in the Seekonk, MA store - yesterday there were two copies in the Attleboro, MA store. I believe the price was $27.95. Not the cheapest probably, but a possible option.

Thanks for that.

I'm torn on this one. It's certainly better than the UK release (and the virtually identical French and Italian masters), but the transfer has a weird noisy look. Look at the beetle on the screenshot of the skull; it has a blocky, low-res sort of texture to it. Reminds me of the funky noise on that Shogun Assassins Blu-ray that Animeigo put out, and I assume the masters would have been made around the same time ('03 ~ '05).

Don't get me wrong, I'm excited to see some of the new extras and I doubt the film has looked any better outside of a 35mm IP. I was just hoping Grindhouse would do a new 4K scan for this one. Oh, well.

Thanks for the effort LordCrumb, but there is something SEVERELY wrong with all of those caps. They are in absolutely no way a representation of the U.S. release. Probably best to remove them before it falsely misleads people as they did the poster above. There are severe compression artifacts. The screenshots on blu-ray.com are a much better representation. And even they are not pristine .png caps.
