My hope is that there is a Christmas season 2016 US Eva release. It feels weird that after the one-two punch of Bebop and Bubblegum Crisis last December there's nothing I want to get this year.

No, he's complaining that the large subtitles cover up even more of a percentage of the viewable area because the video is 4:3. With less image area on the screen than a 16:9 video, the subtitles dominate even more. That was his point.

Because it's Evangelion/EoE on Blu-ray which is a dream come true, an inevitable dream but a dream nonetheless, and even-though the price seems high, when looking at lower profile anime series being released on Blu-ray in Japan, the Price for Eva isn't actually that bad and the yen is weak too. It also helps that the set itself looks nice (Although the box scratches easily!) and finally there's also the possibility of remuxing the subs from the DVD set so you get official subtitles on a BD rip that you own! It looks good on a shelf too

Yeah, I'm also on the fence about picking it up because of the packaging.
The red DVD box had some appeal for a couple of years, but I really wish they would have used some art on the packaging. I remember the 3 laserdisc boxes had some great art and the End of Evangelion LD-box was simply amazing; this packaging just feels cheap and uninspired, but that's just my opinion.
