And it'll still be blown up to 1080p and look like shit.

You can put sd video on a Blu-ray without upscaling it, at least I think. You can gain bit rate and disc durability by releasing an sov on Blu-ray, but it costs like 3 times as much so it makes absolutely no sense.

You can. They have all those anime and cartoon collections on blu-ray in SD. I figured they do that to cram all the shows on 1 or 2 discs.

When all 160 episodes of Fist of the North Star fit on a 4-disc SD on BD set, you can see where it makes a lot of sense to do. You’d be around 30 DVDs for that!

I have Discotek's 4 DVD boxsets of Fist of the North Star. The blu ray collection probably takes up 1/8 of the space. Any shelf space saved is a win in my eyes.

I'd rather watch the 480p than upscaled nonsense. I watch tons of VHS stuff not blown up to 1080p so it'll be fine.

The reason this sort of thing never took off is because they can charge much more for.the 30 DVD box set than a 4 BD box set since most consumers associate the larger box with more discs being worth much more given similar quality... And those really focused on saving space will rent/buy digital.

Then why isn't Ultraman a 30+ DVD set?

Something that seems to be really well known in the retro gaming world, but not quite as much in the video world is that footage mastered from standard definition video isn’t inherently progressive. It wasn’t ever meant to be on a progressive display because they didn’t exist. So when these companies are releasing something transferred from a video master whether it’s a vhs, betacam, umatic, or one inch video the best result will always be given when they leave it at 480 interlaced and allowing the end viewers newer progressive tv or disc player to do the deinterlacing and upscaling. Essentially if these companies are deinterlacing before they encode for dvd, quality is lost in the original image in some way. Now does 480i sound like it would look better than 1080p on a Blu-ray? No, and that’s where most people seem to get lost.

I’m not as up on Blu-ray spec as I am DVD, but if 480i isn’t supported on the format, then I would say it may be debatable to leave standard definition mastered content deinterlaced on dvd than to gain bit rate on Blu-ray and have to interlace.

Most use a 1080P or 4K display. They will be upscaled when one watch the disc.

Well, the image will be deinterlaced if it is interlaced. One can do it better before transfer it to disc, that is why most (all?) Star Wars transfer project are deinterlaced. They don't do interlaced versions. I was part of the "The X0 project" for transfering Star Wars about 15 years ago.

And I have said before, the better compression on bluray will probably give a better image (less compression problems) than the old DVD encoding. Like it will look worse if one transfer VHS to MPEG-1 than MPEG-2.

This is just a technically fun thought.
