I feel a little bit like a filthy animal because I own the original disc but not the anniversary edition.

I'm surprised Home Alone 3 hasn't been released on BD since The NY Times was quoted as "Better than the first two!". Also notice the back of HA2 box says the movie is even funnier in HD, this is true as I cracked up harder watching the HD edition than I did with theatrical, VHS and DVD versions.

I love the 25th anniversary Home Alone transfer. At first when I was just strictly doing comparisons between both versions I didn't notice much of a difference at all but then when I watched the movie I noticed it drastically, ironically around the same exact time as this site's review said as well around the 30 minute mark.

Personally I think I prefer the brighter and softer for a fun Holiday movie such as this, but to those that prefer the dark and grainy who think that it's a big improvement, they've got their option too in the form of the new one. The fact that there's a choice I suppose is a really good thing. In the big scheme of things there's far more important things to get upset over than whether the old or new disc is better when there's so many good movies out there that haven't even been released at all on blu. |

I received my copy from Amazon as well, and noticed the same thing. No slipcover. However, look at the Proof of Purchase / barcode section and you'll see the 25th anniversary text above it.

So, I actually watched the new remaster tonight (before I had just compared some scenes). I then followed it up by watching the old version right after but with the commentary track on (which I had never listened to before and wanted to hear it). So the PQ of both versions is fresh in my mind.
While watching the newer remaster in its entirety, I realized that I was probably not fair in my initial comment in saying that it was only slightly clearer. I would say it actually is a more substantive improvement, especially after the first 30 minutes or so of the film. I also decided that while the new version was darker, it wasn't quite as bad as I was initially saying. The grain/noise however was slightly distracting to me though it did get better as the film goes along. I was watching on a "relatively small" screen and I think I'd hate to see this on a giant one - I'm pretty sure at least the first 30 minutes or so would drive me nuts. When it comes to the old version, I definitely did NOT like the pinkish hue (I always hated that). And yet, I did indeed prefer the brightness and warmth of the picture on the old version. Even though it's got that more pinkish-tint, everything just comes across more "happy". It also color-wise looks more like how I remember the film in the theaters (as other reviewers have mentioned). I'm not sure the new version was a "color correction" so much as a "color re-imagining" because while it seems more accurate to what the colors really should be, it's not in line with how I've ever remembered this movie including how I remember from watching it in the theater. I think the colors may have been overblown on purpose back-in-the-day (the movie always had a VERY 1990 look to it). I concede I could be wrong on this, but I don't think I am. But in any event, the softer, more hazy appearance of the old combined with the warmth and brightness of the picture while it does make the film look much more dated (to 1990), does also in some ways endear itself to this particular movie and add to the "dreamlike Christmassy" feel that this film's always had. While the new remaster is definitely clearer and quite frankly looks much more "modern" as to its overall look, it doesn't have this same "vibe" to me. I enjoyed it well enough and I can see why it is indeed seen as a major improvement to some. On a purely technical basis, it largely is. On an overall "feel" basis, I'm not so sure. Personally, I'd love a remaster that was in the middle. ![]() So bottom line I concede I was probably a little too harsh before regarding the new, but I'm still personally torn as to which version I prefer and am still leaning towards the old. I watched Home Alone 2 on Vudu earlier this year and while it wasn't as clearly remastered as Home Alone is, it looked significantly less ugly than I remember it looking last time I checked it, when I found it so edge enhanced and smeary it was unwatchable.
There was a rumor Fox had also done a 4K for it and that it was available on the M-Go streaming service. Still no sign of a disc though, AFAIK. |
