How quickly the tables have turned, although it's more dumb ****ing luck that Radius60/Pixelogic are terrible at doing Blu-rays but pretty goddamned good at doing UHDs, as long as it stays that way then I don't mind! But it appears that Kino has either changed their authoring house or that same house has adopted a StudioCanal-style 'set and forget' UHD authoring pipeline that pays no attention to the HDR10 layer whatsoever when doing a DV disc.

Something's bound to happen though I don't wish it. What's for certain though when it does happen, we're gonna see this whole cycle repeat. Ppl come in and criticize it, then the coat-tailers arrive and call names and hide on top of their ivory towers hanging "it's okay when I do it" banners. Don't talk about this tho. Just between us.

It's really not the extras, Pixelogic just plain can't encode BD for shit. Soupy blocky grain on film-based stuff, lots of nasty banding on digital-based stuff, they're terrible.

I personally didn't have much worry because aside from the Silence problem, every prior Kino 4k has been stellar. So now that there's something crummy afoot that comes-off entirely Kino's doing, well, it's pretty disappointing. |

People obviously come here for different reasons, but for me the main added value comes from user feedback regarding audio/video quality and comparisons between different versions, the sort that samlop10 provided here.
Reviewers are often in auto-pilot mode where everything new and shiny is absolutely great and will frequently dodge pointing out issues, but a lot of people here will absolutely catch those things. To try to stymie that is detrimental to these forums. Last edited by LeDroitDeTuer; 12-02-2021 at 09:38 PM. |

I don't think you're really getting the nuance in what I'm saying - or more likely it's not convenient for you to do so - so you're painting me simply as someone who doesn't want these things discussed or who just mindlessly accepts any level of incompetence. But if the boycott idea is too ridiculous for you, I'm still not sure what you actually want people to do. I suspect it's you, in fact, who doesn't want to "discuss" these things and instead want us to either agree with you or keep our mouths shut; presumably because you think any gap in the Wall of Resistance will be used by Kino to justify doing nothing. For the record, I positively encourage your complaints. In fact, I think you should take them to the main Kino thread where the insider will see them. And also for the record, I see that it is a less-than-perfect encode. But IN THIS INSTANCE, it's not enough of a problem for me to not buy this disc, in the hope that someone else will do it properly in the future; though if they do, I will buy that as well. But look, if you want me to sign a petition saying I believe Kino should buck-up on the encodes, I'm there. |

In fact, I have enacted my own personal semi-boycott of Kino. In the first year of their existence, I bought virtually all of their releases. Then I had a run-in with them over their refusal to send me a replacement disc for MADHOUSE as I'm in the UK. They told me they didn't want customers from abroad and so I largely accommodated them and have never bought more than a handful every year since. The problem with boycotts, especially with Kino, is that they simply don't work. You won't get solidarity here, trust me, unless it's such an egregious problem the film is literally unwatchable. Bad compression might be a deal-breaker for one person, botched audio for another but there's rarely consensus. And low sales are just low sales. Maybe if hundreds of people returned their discs, with no prospect of a refund, but "THIS COMPRESSION SUCKS" written across it in sharpie, that might have an impact. But most likely not. The sad truth is that you really have to rely on a company CARING - about the films, about the discs, about their customers, even about their own reputation. And that doesn't always seem to be the case with Kino, as exemplified by the KLI's response to most matters. But then sometimes they DO make a correction, and that doesn't really seem to be linked to how many people complain, or how vociferously, but on some more arbitrary basis (most likely how much it costs them). Anyway, I will watch the KL thread with interest to see if they respond. ![]() |
