Well...I weighed the other day, & yes I'm a BIG guy...I am under 300. For the first time in a loooong time. I knew & felt like I had lost from both how I felt & how my clothes were fitting.

I've dropped to under 295 now & I'm down 2 pants sizes!

Yeah...feels good.
Good for you. Keep at it, and keep us posted. Do not rely heavily on the scale. The fact that you are dropping clothes sizes is a great sign.

What are you doing to drop weight/size?

As for diets, I personally do not believe in diets that heavily restrict what you eat (ie Atkins) or limits your intact to a few items. In the case of Atkins, it is not practical to cut out carbs completely without adverse effects. Also, once you eat carbs again, you gain it back.

I am a firm believer in portion control. Most people in Europe and Asia eat a surprising amount of carbs and fat with most of their meals, yet being overweight isn't an epidamic as in the US. One of the factors is portion size. So plate your normal dinner/lunch/breakfast (try to avoid overly processed foods and fast food if you can)... now put back HALF. In restaurants, ask for a to-go box when your meal arrives. Then put half of your plate in the box and set it aside BEFORE YOU EAT. I think you will be amazed how quickly your body will adjust to smaller portion sizes.

The second factor is being active. Walk. Take time to walk around your neighborhood. Or run. Find a new activity.

Anyway, just throwing out ideas that may help. Again, keep us posted of your progress.

+1

I am an overweight American in Taiwan and so surprised that more people here aren't overweight because they eat to all hours and lots of oil and of course lots of rice. Portion size is the biggest thing. Even though Taiwanese eat often, they don't eat a lot. The first time my wife returned to the States with me and my mom made steak and eggs for breakfast she was shocked: a bunch of fried potatoes, toast, eggs and a porterhouse.

Having been on my own weight loss journey I too have discovered the delights of finding old clothes that fit me now!

(I've found that exercise is the key to my weight loss, rather than restricting my food intake)

Keep up the good work TLee!!

I couldn't eat only a three things. Need some variety. I am trying to eat, and fill up on healthy foods, and drinking more water. If I was just eating apples, tuna and celery, I wouldn't last 3 days let alone 3 months before I ran into a McDonald's.

Man, this is great. I'm glad I found you guys!!!

I'm 5' 10 and fluctuate between 175 and 180 lbs. I'm not fat, but I do have a small spare tire I call Quado

I understand eating less and doing more. I just need to figure out how to do more.

I'm actually not in as bad shape as I thought I was, since I did some heavy lifting and hauling for the church picninc a couple of weeks ago and I was fine....everybody else was sucking wind like they were going to die.

I have to find a way to become more active.

I'm glad you guys are here though.

EDIT:

ps - what do we know about basic sushi rolls as far as carbs and such?? Are 3 crab rolls gonna shoot me all to hell??

LD, I firmly believe that keeping an active lifestyle is about doing something you like doing. In other words, if you hate running, then getting a treadmill would not be a consistent solution. You may do it for a bit, but that treadmill will collect dust before long.

But you can augment activities to things you like. As an example, a friend of mine loves dogs but lives in a place that does not allow dogs. She isn't a fan of running. So she picks up her friend's dog after work almost daily and takes it to a dog park. Then she runs/walks with the dog. The dog's owner says that around 5:30, the dog just sits in the entryway waiting for my friend. If my friend isn't coming that day, you can see the disappointment on the dogs face. My friend uses this as a motivation to keep the routine (don't know why the owners won't just play with their own dog... oh well).

So I would start with something active you like doing that is within easy access. It does not have to be an exercise. Then build an activity around it. My mother-in-law likes bird watching. There is a trail next to the high school she where she works, and she walks that trail during lunch with some binoculars.

Throw out ideas if you need help.

Good job OP

great thread, was able to get lots of ideas.

The first 2weeks of exercising and working out was the toughest for me.
now a month and a half in I'm starting to get into it, I'm actually enjoying jogging and all the other exercises I'm doing and when I'm done I feel like doing some more but I read somewhere that it is important to have rest in between and have a couple days of no work out because the rest period is where muscle builds.

so far I've lost 16lbs since the start of July and have dropped down a pants size.

I'm currently 5'11" @ 220lbs.

My goal is between 170-180 by next summer

When I'm alone, I always park in the absolute farthest parking space so I get a good walk in before I go anywhere. (this method is restricted to the same parking lot and not...the next town ;P)

Most important thing is be consistent. Don't sit on the couch to watch Blu-ray until you've done your lifting!!

It was quite inspiring, and I like the story of the trucker. Compare him at the end to when he started and could barely WALK. What I like about this diet is that it is a detox program, and it expects you to eat somewhat normally again (but not back to unhealthy amounts)... just detoxing occasionally.

When I wrestled in college, our coach encouraged us to go through a juice detox program as a team before the start of the season. I wrestled throughout high school where my metabolism was significantly faster and cutting weight in college was significantly easier... even though I wrestled at a LOWER weight than high school. Okay, so wrestling isn't the healthiest sport in terms of losing weight, but the juice detox did help clean out my system and train my body to eat less.

I plan to do the veg juice detox. I am of a pretty healthy weight, and I do workout regularly. But I eat lots of meat and have lots of stress from work. I KNOW I do not eat enough veggies. My blood pressure is pretty high... and I don't want to start taking pills at 31. I do LOVE food (very much a foodie). I have difficulty limiting portions especially if it is in front of me. As a bad habit from wrestling, I can go for awhile without eating... so my self control is very much "all or nothing".

So my plan is to do an initial detox for 14 days then maintenance detox after. I don't know if I want to go for 1 week a month or 2 days each week (probably Tues and Thurs since those are busy days for my wife and I anyway). My goals are to incorporate more veg in my food, lower my portion sizes, and drop my blood pressure.

Any thoughts on my plan are welcome.

I'm saddened by the amount of misinformation in this thread... There is more to "losing weight" than just eating less to get smaller.

To avoid starting a search fest where everyone tries to debunk what I'm saying based on some obscure internet article I'll just say PM me if you want to know more, there are definitely right ways and wrong ways, it's not just "eat less, do more" or "eat less carbs".

This is really more a bunch of kats just getting together in a thread and "talking about $h!t"

I don't think anyone meant for this to be hard information.

If you are willing to answer pms...thanks. There really isn't anything to be saddened by.

If you'd like to clear anything up...feel free.

I've decided that I am going to lose weight but only eating 200 calories per day for the rest of my life. I am hoping to get to about 60 pounds by Thanksgiving.

Wish me luck!!!

Saying that you are sadden by misinformation while providing nothing concrete to back it up saddens me. Moreover providing no information of your own to discuss is even more saddening. So you criticizes without putting any information forward is very original and helpful... so thanks for the criticism. I am sure many people appreciate it.

I do not believe that all info posted here is correct. That is why it is a discussion. Losing weight and keeping weight off is highly dependent on a sustainable course of action, whether a change in lifestyle or diet or a combination.

As for the juice thing... well I just wish to infuse more veggies and fruits into my diet. It was also a system that I have tried and worked for me... though it was followed by horrible diet practices of wrestling.

I hope you are joking.

If you are being sarcastic to my comment, then you evidently didn't read the post or watch the movie.

My sarcasm was towards SonOfArathorn. And I apologize, but I did not read your post nor watch the video. I will now, though.

There is a tonne of misinformation, this is an Internet forum after all. Really, just, like Lucy Diamond said, a bunch of members just sharing their ideas, and I think maybe looking for an "Atta Boy!"

Every diet will be debunked, and someone will be saddened by another's approach to weight loss, no problem. If you believe something is wrong with the "Eat Less, Do More," and"Eat Less Carbs," philosophies please speak up.

Eating less and doing more is good if people, like I, go to Outback order the Bloomin' Onion, Seared Ahi Tuna, get a loaf, or two, of that free bread, order the steak with sides and get the potato soup and salad with ranch dressing and then a few Big Blokes of Fosters and then coffee and chocolate cake for dessert. Too much for one meal, should be eating less. And I probably drove there, which is just a 10 minute walk from my house, because family doesn't like to walk at night in San Diego. Should I eat less and do more, definitely.

Fewer carbs, I for one will never give up carbs, they are needed for energy and I just feel we should eat from all the food groups, just like Ms. Smith taught me in grade 1. I will pick whole grain bread over white, and Raisin Bran over Cornflakes. I always have because I prefer the taste.

For me I eat more
[Show spoiler]often
to shed the fat. I used to eat twice a day, still do sometimes, lunch at 12:30 and dinner at 7:30. Trying to eat breakfast and prepare healthy snacks (trail mix, yogurt + piece of fruit, cheese and crackers, etc.) to eat 3x a day too. When I eat my snacks I don't eat 2 plates of spaghetti, sausage and meatballs, just not as hungry. But I still do enjoy my carbs. Once a week, usually Friday night I eat McDonald's or something equally as unhealthy just to keep my sanity.

I have done enough reading on this and also with a little horse sense I feel this is the diet for me. Almost what I ate as a kid. Mom would give us snacks between meals, but not Oreos, and I wasn't buying 40" pants back then. Still, if this isn't the diet for someone, that's okay; just sharing.
