The red DVD box had some appeal for a couple of years, but I really wish they would have used some art on the packaging. I remember the 3 laserdisc boxes had some great art and the End of Evangelion LD-box was simply amazing; this packaging just feels cheap and uninspired, but that's just my opinion.
The way I see it is that it's the BD and "Archives" sets are the fifth and sixth Evangelion box sets released on the Japanese market as seen below:
  • 1996-1999 LD boxes (x3) + Theatrical Edition
  • 2000 DVD "Second Impact Box" (x3)
  • 2003 DVD "Monolith" box
  • 2007 DVD thinpak box
  • 2015 "Archives of Evangelion" DVD box
  • 2015 Blu-ray box

Their target market most likely have at least one or more of the preceding sets, and the swag that older box sets typically included is less important these days, especially when it comes to re-releases of such a long-standing series. It's not like it's hard to come by Eva merchandise these days, right?

That, and it's not like Japanese residences are getting any larger. I'm sure the relative compactness of the new sets is appreciated by many over there...

O, I appreciate compactness allright in my 2-room appartment. I chucked all of my tapes & LD's out with the advent of DVD's. My whining is strictly limited to the non-existent cover art of the set.

Actually, there is artistic intent in the cover of the Blu-ray. If you watch the ED credits of the TV series[/url], it's conceptually quite similar to the upper half of the screen. Of course the "Archives" set uses the same idea but changed to red.

The red of the DVD set is also very similar to the cover art of the End of Evangelion soundtrack (the first press also had a similar clear red plastic slipcase).

About to watch my shitty Anchor Bay re-release of the Manga DVD of EoE, awaiting the inevitable announcement of a US release of Eva/Movies on Blu-ray.

I love the simplicity of the Japanese artwork: it's the light of the soul.

My only complaint art-wise is that the discs could use some text listing what's on them.

Wait, so is there a US release of this? I was shocked there was a BD of the series at all but will there be a US release?

As of now no. One day maybe but I wouldn't bank on it.

It'll happen, but not any time soon, and will definitely be inferior to the Japanese release in some way or another.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a timed script for Evangelion Death & rebirth (disc 6 of the blu-ray box). Apparently this version is slightly different from the script I have, so the subtitles tend to drift about.

More confirmation that nobody in the world is able to license or renew the rights to NGE, so those Blu-rays will continue to be only for Japan for the foreseeable future.

Once it's all out we can hopefully bring it back. We'll keep everyone informed of course.
It's looking like series is still unavailable (at least when someone inquired with Italian distributor Dynit about the Evangelion BD).

Google Translate gives me "No news yet for Evangelion BD, the Japanese publisher does not sell the rights." i.e. We can't get what isn't for sale. This is what affected say Nodame Cantabile, the rights were not for sale because the international rightsholder had no interest in doing anything with the rights.

In other words, licensing of Nodame is far more complicated and expensive than the series possible value is worth.

As in, they don't want to. It was licensed for broadcast on animax, that's pretty much all sony wanted it for.

Other companies might want to license seasons 2 and 3 to release DVDs of the whole show, but Sony isn't interested in selling the rights.
So that's the problem. No one is going to license DVD rights for just seasons 2 and 3, and Sony is sitting on the rights to season 1 and not doing anything with it.

It's sad, but nothing will change until the final rebuild movie is released.

Guess there's always the do it yourself approach-buying the japanese bluray set and then adding readily available subtitles.

That's what I did. Added the subs and dubs to everything but D&R.

That's fine, I will patiently wait for a proper English release with both subs and the dub. It's an inevitability. Maybe in 3-5 years. I have my dvd set until they decide they want to make a ton of money again.

Anyone who licenses it for NA blu ray will probably have to pay through the nose to get it.

It's a license to print money though.

I have to get around to fine-tuning my Eva subs one of these days so I can catch it on Blu-ray for the second time

In the case of NGE, Anno needs to get a grip. NGE aired over 20 years ago in Japan and reached its peak popularity between then and 10 years ago. By the time they decide to grace us with the original series BD, a lot of people simply won't care.

I don't think that's true. People will go apeshit for Eva for a good while yet, I think.
