If your main issues are the sound effects, then hate to break it to you but pretty much every major Hollywood film has been raiding the popular sound libraries for decades. Not every film has the option (or budget) to record completely new sound effects. The Tie Fighter sound effect, Ape roars, the T-Rex Roar and the raptor noises are just some of the ones used more frequently. Very few movies have unique sound libraries anymore. Once you identify the most popular ones you notice them everywhere. Even in big budget movies where money is no object (The Hobbit, Avengers etc.). As for the creature design, I thought they looked pretty cool and unique. Monsters with heads that open up are just "in" at the minute, but the usage in A Quiet Place was very unique;with it being armour to protect the creature's sensitive eardrums. And what similarities does the attack on the kids have to Jurassic Park apart from it being two kids who are siblings being attacked by monsters? Might as well accuse every horror film featuring children of ripping off Jurassic Park while you're at it. |

I think "A Quiet Place" is a fine movie. It paces well, it's competently structured and filmed... but smart, it is not.
When it ended, I was quite satisfied. Ten minutes later, I couldn't stop thinking about how illogical and nonsensical so many things were about it, and although I still think it's "a fine movie", I tell people to not think too hard, just go along for the ride. Edit: Also, I said this before, but if you guys like this movie, check out Hidden (2015) with Alexander Skarsgard, and written/directed by the Duffer brothers (Stranger Things). A Quite Place is emotional exploitation at its finest. Typically I find that putting kids in danger is just a really cheap tactic to make the audience care without having to try very hard, but it works in this movie. The setup, pacing, and performances all work really well. And the whole thing just feels very earnest, which to me is what makes it feel unique.

I still like my brain to stay on at least half of the time when watching a movie. If the movie pretty much stays within the bounds it sets for itself and is competent at it, then I'll roll with it. |

![]() Do they reuse sounds from a Foley library? Absolutely. Just because you have seemingly poor hearing and think there are only less than five sounds that they reuse, does not make your (wrong) opinion fact. Serious question, Rocky. Do you try to add any real content of value to the forums when you post? Because from my observance, your often-out-of-left-field opinions detract and disrupt from the forums more than anything. Back to topic, A Quiet Place monster may not be a newly-imagined monster, but I don't think it matters all that much. Krasinski said in interviews that this is more a film about the family. The family dynamic, the characters/individuals make the film what it is. I think that's why the film is so successful. The connection and relationship between the husband and wife; the connection between the father and the children, especially the disconnect between the father and daughter; the relationship between the kids. For those with children or have experienced childbirth, the difficulty of the labor scene, also. The monsters are the reason why they are in the situation, sure, but it's watching them go through their circumstances together that make the film so intriguing. Did they make erring decisions? Probably. As a parent, I've made plenty of them, so that also is another level of connection that many people could possibly feel. |
