Dracula Has Risen From the Grave ( I’ve just gotten into Hammer horror the past month or so)

10/01 - 10 Cloverfield Lane - - Well shot, acted, written edited. Only grievance is the ending, it felt so tacked on.
- Alien - - MASTERPIECE. Beautiful set pieces, great effects, and amazing tension. One of the greatest horror movies of all time.

IT'S TIME!

Let's start this Halloween flick fest right...

10/1:

Hell Fest (2018) *Saw in theaters* 1/2
Thoroughly entertaining slasher flick with minor early hiccups. Awesome production design and cinematography with a hardcore score to boot.

after seeing Hell Fest...

The Funhouse (1981)
Like Hell Fest, the movie had strong atmosphere and mood, an awesome score and gorgeous cinematography but the characters here were much more cliched and borderline cardboard where you could careless if they made it or not but a solid and enjoyable film regardless.

First viewings in bold.

01/10 - Mandy (2018)
01/10 - Blood Fest (2018)
01/10 - Stay Alive (2006)

02/10 - The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014)

Rounded down from 4.5 skulls. As a huge fan of Slashers and the '76 film I'm thoroughly gobsmacked this was so good. I haven't been overly compelled to see it before now because the response to the film was quite tepid and I haven't heard or seen anyone raving about in online Horror circles. I expected it would be just "okay" but I'm delighted. This is easily the best Slasher in years. The directing cinematography, writing, editing and performances are all much better than they have any right to be. I absolutely love the way they tied it together with the real events and the original film too. Honestly, if they ever get the Friday the 13th rights and lawsuit mess cleared up, get this guy to direct!

STRONG, STRONG RECOMMEND FOR SLASHER FANS!

Thought I’d start with an absolute classic:

Revenge of the Blood Beast (1966)*

Would have been great if it’d just stuck to the witch’s curse horror story that it started out as. Those parts of the film are truly entertaining. However, with zany side plots and some painfully unfunny “comedy” mixed in, it really made this a chore to get through. 79 minutes felt like an eternity.

#7__Mr. Boogedy (1986)
#6__Nightmare Castle (1965)*
#5__Tourist Trap (1979)*
#4__Crimson Peak (2015)*
#3__Sisters (1972)*
#2__Prince of Darkness (1987)*
#1__The Fog (1980)

oh I saw it quite a few years back on dvd and remember liking it. Heavily atmospheric and moody from what I recall. Looking forward to seeing it again with improved picture quality!

IT (1990) -Its been a good amount of years since I last saw this and for the most part, it was good, but not great. Tim Curry as Pennywise is easily the best part of this made-for-tv adaptation. The ending, while being pretty weak, does have some nice effects for Pennywise’s final form.

october is a tricky month. especially for me with the start of hockey season.

I'm gonna say 20, as that seems reasonable. and maybe I can overachieve and get to 30.

Fine sequel to the classic film highlighted by a terrific cast and excellent sets and backdrops. The movie is beautifully shot and Universal's stunning blu ray compliments it nicely...

New Netflix original from the director of Blue Ruin, Green Room, and Murder Party. Continues to have beautiful cinematography like his last few, nasty "real" feeling violence and gore, but not as solid of a plot. Still enjoyable for a Netflix original, I hope this guy gets a chance to make a bigger budget film.

10/1, part 2

C.H.U.D. (on a scale of zero to five) While it's nice to see an integral cut which makes far more sense than the theatrical cut, this is still a film that was damn near ruined by the producer. (The commentary track talks a lot about his interference.) Still, the performances are solid and the storyline is from B-movie heaven. If only director Douglas Cheek had been allowed to make the movie his way.

31 Days Of Halloween!!!

Time for them Halloween movies!!! Favorite time of the year!

10/1: Hereditary -
I believe in everyone has a right to their own opinions, but I really don't get the hype for this movie. Had some good moments but overall I thought it was pretty meh, felt most the acting was bad(especially the son) and I had to fight to stay awake.

1. House on Haunted Hill

I decided to kick off my 31 Days of Halloween Movies marathon with Scream Factory's new Blu-ray release of House on Haunted Hill.

Once a mental institute for the criminally insane, the Vannacutt Institue now sits vacant, quietly overlooking the ocean. But when amusement park mogul Stephen Price rents the house to host his wife's birthday party, he unknowingly invites five strangers to spend the night with the promise of one million dollars to anyone who can make it to morning. But the house has plans of its own. Once everyone has arrived, the house flips the security switch and traps everyone inside. Now, the guests have no other option but to try and survive the night before the darkness inside awakens and kills them all.

Released in 1999 during the middle of the slasher film resurgence that started with Scream, House on Haunted Hill is somewhat of a breath of fresh air. It was a remake of the 1958 William Castle horror film that starred horror movie icon Vincent Price, but it was updated for modern audiences. Geoffrey Rush leads the cast as Stephen Price, a character he insisted that he modeled after movie director John Waters, but he instead comes across as a dead ringer for Vincent Price, and it features a likable and recognizable cast including Ali Larter, Taye Diggs, and Jeffrey Combs as the ghost of Dr. Vannacutt.

Scream Factory has given House on Haunted Hill the collector's edition treatment, loading the Blu-ray with special features and a new 2K scan from its original film elements. After spending years viewing the film on DVD and later through a stream on Vudu, House on Haunted Hill -- in my non-professional opinion -- has never looked or sounded better. The image is clear, the colors are vibrant, and the 5.1 surround sound mix shines, creating an immersive atmosphere that utilizes the rear channels and subwoofer to perfection.

House on Haunted Hill is a wild ride that I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting. It holds up well and, to my surprise, it doesn't feel dated at all. I wanted to start my marathon off with something fun, and this movie was the perfect starting point.
