For me the issues with Beverly Hills Cop sequels is that the 2nd film is enjoyable if ludicrous in places, however the 3rd film is just irredeemable dirge.

I don't even understand why this is a thread there's no knowledge that Scream is even going to get a physical 4K release, shouldn't this be on the wishlist thread? This whole forum needs to be cleaned up with threads like this, only official announcements should be warranted in this thread.

I've been marathoning all Scream movies again just as a rewatch. Unfortunately, my Scream 4 BD is skipping during the kitchen conversation between Sidney and Jill. Going for the ol' disc boiling method later to try and patch it. Otherwise, I'll have to either repurchase the BD or await a UHD release.
However, earlier I had the ranking 2-1-3-4, and I might have to change it to 2-1-4-3. I know there are still two moments that have yet to show up in my rewatch of 4 that I have to eyeroll the living shit out of, the opening is the weakest to me, and I am absolutely hating the digital & bloom effect going on... but this is less about Scream 4 proving better to me than it is Scream 3 proving worse. What I discovered upon the rewatch is that the only scenes that really shone for me in Scream 3 were the scenes with Sidney, though she's not in it way too much (and as far as how Neve Campbell looks in the movies, I gotta rank that 3-2-1-4). Everyone else here adored Parker Posey, and she is one of the worst parts for me (her character, at least). The lack of gore was also very apparent this time around. The original film really showed me a new level of groundedness, though. I like to think of this as a slasher franchise, and with Scream not presenting too too much of it like its sequels does I have a newfound appreciation for its approach and Kevin Williamson's script. That being said, Scream 2 just excels in everything that it does (yes, I even lovingly embrace the cafeteria scene) and it does right in how a sequel should. I don't acknowledge it as a standalone ever though so it doesn't work as well without watching Scream first, but I still easily place 2 above 1. Regardless, even in the 2-1-4-3 ranking (and we'll see how I feel when I can finish watching 4 again), they're all loved. |

1-4-2-3 for me. Never understood the hate for 4, the brutality is back up to Casey and Steve levels, and the final act bloodbath is exquisite. I adore the opening too, mad but genius. [Show spoiler] I’m glad to see people finally warming to 4, it’s just a shame they didn’t at the time because we were on course for a Craven-Williamson 5 & 6. They got shitcanned and now Craven’s dead. Well done audiences ![]() 2 is a very strong sequel. My only issues with it are that it’s tamer than 1 and I find it starts to drag after half-way. I love the Broken Arrow music but WTF is it doing in Scream, over Dewey/Gail love scenes?? Distracting. I don’t like Sid’s black combover and pale goth skin in this one - she needs some sun. 3 is pretty weak but Sid has never looked better and the final revelation is pretty good. I’m glad Williamson returned for 4 to wrap things up properly. Now just hoping these newcomers don’t bungle everything with 5. They sure screwed the title ![]() ![]() ![]() |

The thing I love about the original Scream is not only that it's a good horror film, but it's also a good murder-mystery, a whodunnit, and when you rewatch it you can see why they chose to kill each person and how they did it, it's all related to Sydney, except the ones who stayed at the house after the party and just got in the way. But all of it was well thought of and everything was personal. Something that was kind of sloppy in the sequels (like how tracing the phone calls was a huge deal in the original, suddenly it's never even thought of).
Even in Scream 2 does Sidney really feel betrayed over someone she had no real intimate relationship with or that woman she hasn't seen for years, what effect does it have on her when she hears about the murder of three people she doesn't know and has never met? Honestly SMG should have been one of her friends (it would have been better than the other forgettable new characters). Not to say that Scream 2 is terrible, it has good suspense, good chase sequences, Gale's growth is great, Cotton is a good red herring, but it feels like the sum of its parts are better than the whole. |

Scream UHD is my most anticipated release this year. Love these flicks. In an ideal world, the sequels will also see a 4K release. Have a feeling Scream 5 will do quite well at the box office.

Hahaha, I knew somebody was going to raise their eyebrow at this one.
Let me clarify a few things first: 1) I wouldn't do this for myself unless I've exhausted all other possibilities (such as wiping clean with a cloth and other product, trying it on other players, see how poorly it skips after the fact, etc.) and was okay with the possibility that I would make matters worse for myself instead of better (which means getting "no movie" instead of half of one, in my case). 2) I've been doing this since the PS2 days. It has almost always improved the situation, even done on skipping Redbox discs (I remember needing to have to do it with their Pet Sematary and Richard Jewell BD's). 3) I wouldn't ever recommend this to anyone who didn't know what they were doing with it or didn't think it was worth the risk. I don't want to be held liable for their possible chance of simply melting their disc completely to liquid form or starting a damn fire in their house, lol. All this being said, stupid as it sounds... look up the process, feel out the reasoning, then do it again in case there are alternative viewpoints or extra layers to the concept, and if you ever dare to try it make sure that it's initially on something that isn't working well and you're okay with still not working in the future. Given that I've tried "everything else" besides buying a new disc, I'll likely be doing it for myself later this evening. You can absolutely bet I won't be seeing a skip in that scene. I present to you... LE BOIL! ![]() Quote:
I keep mentioning things that do get underneath my skin with it though, and they really are singular moments or the overall cinematography. Although I think the calls were improved on, Ghostface gets a little weird in being overzealously descriptive in how brutally he wants to kill somebody. Then again, I have to remember that Ghostface isn't just one person, but has been several different people... so those are just the people themselves being who they are when they say what they say. And what is the title for Scream 5? Isn't it just Scream again? Or is it 5cream? While "Scream" wouldn't be good, the reason Scream 4 didn't do so well was because of its title. People who didn't watch the earlier ones knew they weren't about to catch up with the previous three, and a fourth film in any franchise that has a "4" in it is often a recipe to bomb for the reminder that it may be overstaying its welcome, no matter whether it actually does. A lot of sequels are doing this whole "Let's just call it what the original was" recently, notably in the same genre with Halloween doing it in 2018 and The Grudge doing it in 2020. I don't share the same faults in Scream 2 as you do. I don't think it's tamer, I don't think it falls off in the second half, and anything regarding Dewey and Gale (especially when they rekindle things) was great. You gotta theme Dewey around Broken Arrow anyway, especially when it transitions to horror afterward. |
