MPC-HC's default renderer "Enhanced Video Renderer (Custom presenter)" doesn't dither, but without dither the YCbCr to RGB conversion can have quantization errors.

With dithering (and disabled debanding) there is noticeable less banding in my video-sample, so maybe it is not so good for medium dithering-tests anymore, i don't know.

But there are still 2 questions left:
-can i disable dithering when i use low debanding (because both do some debanding),
-are my "dark areas" in my test-images a bug because of missing dithering or is dithering doing something "strange" and create too bright areas?
You should *NEVER* *EVER* disable dithering, especially not when doing anything image quality related. Doing so will introduce banding and quantization errors. If those areas are darker with dithering disabled then that's an error caused by disabled dithering. Dithering is not doing anything strange, it just gets rid of quantization errors on the cost of increased noise floor.

Just think about it yourself: If you have a large image area which after YCbCr -> RGB conversion has an 8bit brightness of e.g. 80.4, then without dithering every pixel in that image area will be rounded down to 80.0. So the average brightness of the whole image area will be 80.0. If you enable dithering (as you should!) some pixels will be drawn as 80.0 and some with 81.0, resulting in an average brightness of 80.4. So only by using dithering you'll get the correct image brightness.

Dithering does not deband anything, it just avoids quantization errors. And quantization errors can *cause* banding artifacts. So enabling dithering doesn't repair/improve anything. It's the other way round: Disabling dithering can introduce severe image artifacts.

It doesn't matter whether you enable debanding or not, you should never disable dithering.
Example of quantization errors: https://slow.pics/c/EHOQ2FE6 (Default settings is brighter and has red tint)

MPV also doesn't dither in default settings, but it can be enabled via the user config.

NLScavenger, thank you. Please advise how to configure madVR to take screenshots from 2K Blu-ray. Leave the default madVR settings?

Default madVR settings are fine for the most part, but in the screenshot settings you'll want to tick all boxes that start with "Don't".

Not the same frame, but you get the idea

JP BD and DE BD are based on the digital intermediate, but DE BD seems to have been regraded for some reason. DE BD has English dub/sub, and both the original cut and shorter international cut. Extras are on a DVD.

Sony provided Umbrella AU and Manga UK with an ancient film-out transfer that was created by IMAGICA for "overseas use"

Got to see some clips from DE BD. Guess it's going to my to-buy list.

Missed this, but Neil Lumbard reviewed the following 3 weeks ago:

Kaiji
Knights of Sidonia (2021 release)
The Twelve Kingdoms (Discotek release)

The Kaiji review sure is something. I've not watched the series in 8 years, but did they take any screenshots from season 2? They make no mention of any difference between the two seasons for the video quality.
Quote:
Arriving on Blu-ray from Sentai Filmworks, Kaiji is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high definition in the original television broadcast aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The release has an average presentation quality. The picture-quality is inferior to most high-definition encodes.

The presentation appears to not be in native high-definition one and has the appearance of an upscale. Jaggies are visible in some scenes. Color reproduction is average at best. The release looks soft and fuzzy at times. By and large, a serviceable presentation at best.
Also it's not video-quality related, but this is a bit of a surprise...
Quote:
Kaiji is an average anime series that doesn't manage to make as big of an impression as one might hope to find. The concept of the series is decent enough but there isn't much to the anime at the same time. The anime is set against the backdrop of the world of gambling and explores the goofy antics of the central protagonist while exploring the story. The animation is nothing to write home about, either. Everything looks average: colors are muted and the background art is simplistic. Nothing special. RENT IT.
Also, a 3/5 for special features and extras when it's just the standard clean OP/EDs and trailers? Uh, that's higher than I was expecting.

All the screenshots appear to be from the 1st arc (episodes 1-9) of Season 1. Based on the reviewer's thoughts on the series, I wouldn't be surprised if that's all they watched. Season 2 is native HD, so it should look much better than Season 1.

I generally ignore his reviews, since most that I've seen lack any critical analysis of the story which then does not make me intrigued to go watch what he's reviewing. Though he does seem to have put in some effort on the Kaiji review going into describing the art. Still nothing here to change my mind on the anime reviews, sorry to say.

Nothing about the constant judder for Kaiji either. In all seriousness though, who on earth actually pays any attention to anime reviews on this site? Everything is always hunky dory according to them.

I don't pay much attention to them either, main uses are for screenshots (in the case of Kaiji though, having screenshots from only S1 is quite problematic as S1 is upscaled from SD, S2 is native HD), profile backdrops, and then seeing a lack of understanding basic things. Like...
Quote:
Persona 4: The Animation features only an English language version, presented via a nicely rendered lossless DTS- HD Master Audio 2.0 track. The inclusion of only an English language version actually made a few headlines in the somewhat insular world of anime, for the original Japanese language track featured many of the same voice actors who had done the videogame series. The Japanese licensors evidently did not want the Japanese language track appearing on this Blu-ray (though strangely they allowed its use on the DVD). Such are the vagaries of licensing agreements, which frequently make little sense to outsiders (and probably even insiders). The series has its fair share of neat sound effects, and those are presented with excellent fidelity and some nicely varied dynamic range. Dialogue is clean and clear at all times, and the series' themes and underscore are also presented with excellent fidelity. A surround track probably would have considerably opened up the hallucinogenic aural quality of some of the goings on in the interior world, but otherwise this DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track suffices quite nicely.
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Perso.../48894/#Review

What are holdback periods and the consequences of going against them (*Cough*FUNimation angering Kadokawa by ignoring Kadokawa's solicitations*Cough*)? What is reverse-importation? Sentai's Persona 4 release hit 1 month after the final Japanese Blu-ray, so of course Aniplex Japan wouldn't allow Sentai to put the Japanese audio track or extras on the Blu-ray.
Quote:
The series arrives on Blu-ray from Sentai Filmworks with a 480p standard definition presentation. No, you didn't misread that part. The series is presented on Blu-ray in standard definition. As part of a growing trend with certain anime labels, select series which are determined to lack "good-enough" elements to produce a high definition Blu-ray are now being presented with standard definition presentations. The biggest reason for this decision seems to be the ability to include a significantly higher episode count on fewer discs (although Pet Shop of Horrors only contains four episodes). Keep in mind this is not even an upscaled-to-HD presentation with the picture-quality benefits such a release can offer. This release is a SD port with minor tweaks.

This release feels like an insult to the Blu-ray format. I wish anime studios would not release standard definition content on Blu-ray this way (especially when the source is in poor quality). This is honestly one of the worst looking releases I have ever seen in my years or reviewing. I knew it would look disappointing given it contains standard-definition source content. Yet I was not prepared for the "horrors" of the transfer.

Presented in mindbogglingly awful standard definition with plenty of interlacing, artifacts, compression artifacts, and edge-enhancement (along with a window-boxed opening credits card) this is a terrible looking presentation. The picture quality is outstandingly bad with weak colors and poor clarity. It's a botch job in every sense of the word.
Not sure if you've noticed, but Blu-ray has officially replaced DVD when it comes to anime in North America. DVD-only SKUs do not sell anymore regardless of if the show is native HD or not. The only way to make many SD shows available at this point is to upscale them or do SDBD, and not every old show is going to have good masters.

K-On! has had a couple of previous home video releases, but this new iteration is perhaps a bit odd in that it includes only the first four episodes, with the rest to follow in separately packaged offerings.
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/K-ON-.../20370/#Review

Welcome to how most anime were sold, especially as the singles paid the bills. Granted, singles were on their way out by 2011, and the 6-episode single happened around 2009, but still, it wasn't particularly unusual.
Quote:
When mentioning extras in collected versions and initial releases, Williams confirmed what was told to ANN this past week - that ADV Films will continue to focus on extras in the initial releases of series, and that collected releases will generally not feature any extras. This is to make sure that the initial releases continue to carry the added value that goes with their higher price. Furthermore, it was stated that roughly only 31% of anime fans buy the initial releases as soon as they come out. Companies rely on those initial sales to finance the series, therefore they are looking into as many ways as possible to entice fans to buy the initial releases.

I don't pay much attention to all of their reviews, not just anime.

Years ago there was an incident where some insiders, who used factual evidence to point out holes in the claims by a reviewer, got suspended. lol.

German Blu-ray screenshots made in VLC (sorry), but should give you an idea about the banding:

Does anybody have a BD comparison of the Demon Slayer Mugen Train movie between the JP BD and Funimation BD version?

It looks okay, but it does suffer from common problems seen in other Kazé releases: macroblocks in browns and strong banding in selected dark scenes. At least it is very cheap (SRP 35€) for the whole series. Dororo is on 4 BD50, 38 GiB used per discs. The pilot is missing. It uses the BD masters.
