Agreed, and I think that is the case for many. Criterion has a lot of fans out there, and I'd be surprised if any eventual SC release contained the same content as the Criterion release. Many will be willing to pay for that different content, even if the SC release has comparable PQ/AQ.

I have The Third Man and Pierrot le fou, both of which have plastic cases.

Thanks!
All of the first run Criterions are digipaks: The 400 Blows, Bottle Rocket, Chungking Express, El Norte, The Last Emperor, The Last Metro, Last Year At Marienbad, The Man Who Fell To Earth.

The rest are in the new clear keep-cases and you won't need to order replacements.

I'd like to put my two cents in about some of the films being discussed here. I loved Seventh Seal...I like Ingmar Bergman alot actually. I haven't seen Revanche yet or Hunger but looking forward to seeing them.

I hated Chasing Amy Haha. I don't do well with modern chick flicks and I'm a chick! LOL :P. The kinds of films I enjoy collecting the most are film noir and the one director I own the most criterion's of is Jean-Pierre Melville - so that shows what kind of films I enjoy :P
Do you mind if I ask where you got your insanely awesome icon pic?

Check out blubeaver.ca for the UK release of Pierrot Le Fou and you'll see that the transfer is slightly different.

I also think there are plenty of people out there who love and support Criterion enough to justify spending extra on the OOP disc. A completionist collector will definitely want this in their library, even if/when the Studio Canal version is released in Region A. It may not go for the same price that The Third Man is currently fetching (close to $60 USD new), but I would imagine that copies will be ebayed around the $40-50 price point.

I finished watching "8 1/2" last night. I have to say that I'm quite impressed with the whole package. Great movie, great transfer, great audio, great supplements. It's no surprise really, but I thought I'd throw that in.

Next up, watch "Lola Montes" and then get a hold of a copy of "Revanche" and "Hunger" before the March titles role around.

I started collecting Criterion titles in the old LaserDisc days. It took a while, but when their DVD collection came rolling into focus, all of a sudden there was this new meaning for the name Criterion Collection. Even though they were releasing some mainstream titles, if you owned the Criterion Edition of that title, then you owned the superior version. It's been that way ever since. Criterion has undoubtedly made a strong and long lasting name for themselves in the minds of home video consumers and cinephiles alike, so I see the same thing here. No matter if "Studio Canal" is pulling all of their titles from Criterion so they can rival them and make their own name (which no matter which way you look at it is a really bad idea), CC will always be the better value even if it's OOP.

With the actions SC are taking with their new "business model" they're risking an awful lot. For one, if they do decide to re-release "The Third Man" and "Pierrot Le Fou" in their own editions on BD then they have to live up to some extraordinary work to make people, esp. fans of CC, want to get their versions. Look at what they've done with "Ran". The BD transfer was so bad that they even had people saying they were just going to keep the CC DVD rather than do the "up-grade". That's a prime example of what I'm saying. As a matter of fact, I'm sure that despite the CC of "Ran" being OOP, the online re-sales and orders from OOP retailers skyrocketed for a brief period.

Movies with subs should not be crossed off a list - just because. Some of the best movies out, have subs. It's not as bad as you think. Trust me. I used to feel the same way years ago. I hated and avoided movies with subs.

I would have missed out on many great films if I continued that trend. Thankfully I did not.

What Vicon said -- you're going to be missing a lot by avoiding films with subtitles (especially in the Criterion Collection). Start getting used to watching films with subtitles now, and you'll thank yourself later.

Also, it looks like Idioteque has a new best friend.

Unfortunately, if you think "Benjamin Button" is one of the best movies you've ever seen, then overall I'm not so sure that you'd enjoy most of Criterion's output. That's just my personal opinion. And, not wanting to read subtitles is a shame 'cause that's gonna cut out a lot of the great films that Criterion does release.

I would suggest going through pro-b's reviews and read some of the film's plots. So, far there are a total of 31 Criterion blu-rays reviewed. Then, you could cut out the foreign language films, as well, and start with the English-language films.

The only reason I will make the connection, is because so many other people made it first..........but I think Benny-Buttons is a better "film" than Gump, in the sense of cinematography, acting, story....... Gump is a little more fun though due to a lot of the humor.

as for "what next" from Criterion..... I would recommend The Wages of Fear

I have been finding myself recommending this a lot lately......

subs..... yes

but it's not terribly dialogue heavy

I'm looking to purchase the replacement case for my copy of The Third Man on Blu-ray, but I reside in Canada. I figure I have to submit a $5 payment in US funds, but would I have to include extra shipping charges? I can't seem to find any "official" info about this anywhere.

I would not worry about it. Submit the payment and request and leave it at that. I have shipped to CA several times this past month. Media mail is only like $1.80, if that. To CA from USA is cheap. From CA to USA is another story.

Vicon,

Did you end up contacting Criterion via phone in regards to your order?

I have been toying with the idea of ordering the replacement cases (just thought I'd wait a few months until the demand dies down)

If I do.... I would consider ordering 2 or each, and splitting the order + shipping to Canada.......

No, Canada is NOT considered International by Criterion. I'm in Canada and I e-mailed Jon before buying my cases, and he told me Canada was the same price.
