I just finished watching my Criterion Blu-ray of On the Waterfront.
I watched the 1.67:1 version on Disc One before checking out some of the supplements. I would like to watch the film in the other two aspect ratios before chiming in with an actual user review for this site, but, for now... I give this one an A+ across the board. On the Waterfront, like 12 Angry Men, is an important slice of American cinema history given a respectful and thorough treatment by the Criterion Collection. This was my first time watching the film, but I recognized a multitude of quotes and scenes in the movie that have since been elevated to iconic cinematic status and are, therefore, ingrained into the minds of today's moviegoers by simple osmosis. This is Americana through and through, with the desperation captured since in Bruce Springsteen songs and resigned barroom conversations. Social significance and cinema historical value aside, On the Waterfront is simply a fun and infinitely watchable movie that does not feel "homeworky" at all. One of the reasons why we go to movies is to "meet" good people, and it was a pleasure to become acquainted with Terry Malloy, Edie Doyle, and Father Barry. Lee J. Cobb's Johnny Friendly is an intimidating force of nature, and his vise grip around the lives of the longshoremen can be felt in every aspect of the story. The movie looks wonderful on this Blu-ray. Having never seen it before, I cannot comment on the improvements over previous transfers, but I am hard-pressed to imagine anything better. I will be watching the other aspect ratio versions soon, simply because I was looking forward to watching On the Waterfront again as soon as the final credits rolled. |

Do yourself a favor and buy it. Its an important film that is acting and writing of the highest caliber. Holds up very well and the CC blu is a must own. One of the safest blind buys if you have never seen it before.

Just a question off the top of my head for anyone who cares. What is your top three most wanted movies for Criterion to bring to Blu-ray? Please explain your choices.
![]() My top 3: 1. Diner (1982) 2. Reservoir Dogs (1992) 3. The Usual Suspects (1995) I would love to see Diner get a Criterion release with a good transfer, and some good extras to go with it. I also would love to see a release of RD with much better audio, and for a release of Usual Suspect to actually have some extras to watch. I know none of these are likely.......but I can always dream ![]() |

Res. Dogs and The Usual Suspects will never, ever see a Criterion release. But dream on if you'd like. |

Man I really wish my local Best Buy, Walmart, FYE, Fry's etc. had Godzilla, 12 Angry Men, Being John Malkovich, and the Seventh Seal.
I'm assuming since the price of The Man Who Fell to Earth and The Third Man is so high, it is not sold in stores and is rather rare to find anywhere? What is the cause of such gouged prices for these two? |

I wouldn't say quirky films like Wes Anderson's or Tiny Furniture are "more accessible" just because they are newer. You have to develop a taste for those, whereas 12 Angry Men and On The Waterfront present must more prescient stories that, honestly, could've been made even today. Thus, making them more accessible to mainstream audiences.

You would be very hard-pressed to find a Criterion title more accessible than 12 Angry Men. And while I can think of other titles that are as accessible I can't think of too many that are both this accessible and this good.
It's a very straight-forward drama with clear conflicts and easily recognizable character types. It's a fantastic film. |
