Idk, that thing looks pretty barren tbh. Like it looks high quality, but the content isn't very exciting. Didn't really show a good flip through of the book, but from what they showed, it looked pretty thin and mostly posters/pomo art. If I get an art book, I want some production art, like character designs and sketches and stuff, love that sort of thing.

Think I'm fine with my UK boxset I got for like £73

Nicest anime collectors edition I've probably gotten is the Devilman Crybaby Aniplex+ exclusive release with the extra artbooks and vinyl soundtrack, that thing rules (expensive af though)

Hi guys,

Does anyone know if the UK standard edition has a slipcover like the US one does? The promotional images on every website I find are of the amaray case with no slip. I know HMV have an exclusive version that has an exclusive slip but not sure if a slip is customary with the standard release. Thanks in advance!

For Neon Genesis Evangelion? No, Anime Limited almost never do slipcovers for standard releases.

So I got my Evangelion CE today. There were a few loose disks and some scratches on the collectors disks. It’s bullshit that GKids used such cheap cases to store the blurays. For almost $200, you think they could spring for halfway-decent cases. I wish there a disk-replacement program but seeing as how these are collectors editions I assume that I would have to return the whole set and just role the dice to see if a new one wasn’t any worse.

Those fat, heavy, blue Blu-ray cases in the UK Collector's set are looking better all the time, lol.

The discs were held on the 2-tab hubs just fine with those cases.

Once again, as a sub-only viewer there was no practical reason (outside of intense FOMO) for me to pick up this substantially more expensive version. What ultimately swayed me, however, was the very real possibility that we may never see another physical release of this show again in North America once the licensing period with GKIDS ends. If this is going to be my final copy, I want it to be a handsome one.

Of course, it's also possible that GKIDS end up doing such a high print run on the CE that, like many Shout! Factory deluxe sets, it basically becomes an open edition. I hope that's not the case, but there is a fair amount of precedent. (Friday the 13th deluxe edition I'm looking at you. )
Hoping that something becomes OOP is a bit odd. I really hope this edition gets some kind of retail presence like other Gkids collectors editions. Then again, making it online pre-order exclusive could have been part of their deal with Khara to include the ADV dub and subs.

Unless Khara blocks renewals again (which is why ADV lost the series in late 2011 (ADV still exists) as confirmed by Madman), the series probably won't go OOP again. Also even as a sub-only viewer, there's still incentive to get the CE over the standard edition. The standard set has the Netflix subs which were criticized for being too literal, while the CE has the subs found on the ADV and Manga releases.

FYI, FMTTM is still the insert during Kaji's voicemail during the recap in Death (True)² on the "bonus" dub disc.
However, it's still missing in the Japanese audio.

So, it's only missing in episode 21' and the EDs?

And for those curious, the Manga audio on the "bonus" dub, does in fact have the cartoony splatter sounds on it.

Tbh, even if you prefer the subbed version, there's still the exclusive video format version along with the original subtitle translation from ADV (which is way less literal and a lot better imo) and the booklet and art cards that makes this worth it. I personally bought the CE because I wanted to own the ADV dub and sub legally and I also found the packaging and exclusive extras to be quite worth the price. Also I'm pretty sure GKIDs did this so fans could have a way to legally own the ADV sub and dub but that's just what I think personally.

The price has been the same, and the "true limited edition" was the ultimate edition, not the collector's set. I don't really understand why someone would be frustrated about something like this, unless you're a scalper or something. There are TONS of limited edition sets that came out a few years ago and are still in stock. Your expectations were set a little too high for how limited this would be.

Personally, I'm glad the CE is still available for anyone that wants it. It will probably remain a Rightstuf exclusive once it's sold out on Shout's website, until mid-2022 or so, but that's just a guess.

It a "me" mentality. If I paid and/or suffered a lot, so should you... It's stupid to think that way.

Honestly, I'm in the same boat as you. I'd be glad if the CE gets a long print run for those that want it to grab one instead of paying scalpers for, let's be honest, inferior DVDs now. And that just for some that are nostalgic for the ADV/Manga dubs too. If they are happy with the VSI dub, there's a really cheap release for that too. Fans, in the end win.

I never considered the reason it's been out of print is because of the rebuilds, but it makes sense haha
Now that they're finished the series gets re-released

Imagine if Anno finished the rebuilds when he originally intended to have then done by like 2009 or something

I (of course) want the show to stay in print. I also wish GKIDS would have been more transparent in regards to just how limited the "limited collector's edition" actually is/was back when it when it was first announced.

Then again they are likely being deliberately vague in order to create a sense of urgency. Clearly it worked to a degree considering the number of people in this thread who were convinced that it would sell out completely before street date, with some even advising people to take out a credit card if they had to in order to get a copy.

The new translation is more accurate. The ADV subs are a product of their time. The collector's box does have a premium feel to it though and it looks quite handsome on display.

Nah man, that's dumb. Other people being able to get something doesn't affect you in anyway. The only way this would affect you is if you planned to resell later.

And it's not becoming cheaper later on. If you pre-ordered, then that's cheaper. The people who buy it later will be paying more, not less.
You could get it on a sale, but that's just something you risk waiting around for.

Also, the "sense of urgency" you speak of... Idk man. Speaking about the Ultimate Edition here, but it was the opposite of that. When the preorders went live there were people in this thread wondering whether to even get it or not, and "there's still a few months to decided on ordering it before the price increases". Then it sold out before like even a week was up. Within the day for the US release. Maybe that quick sellout made people hurry more to the collectors edition, but even then, it's something you still wanted, or you wouldn't have bought it, so what does it matter of you bought it a bit sooner.

I don't think they were "deliberately vague" about it though. Collector's editions for anything don't always give the exact amount that'll be produced. With high end collectors editions, like the Ultimate Edition they do, like "only X000 will be made", but more "standard" collectors editions, you don't really see it much, because they still get a lot made anyway.

My CE came in the mail. As some other people have noted, it has some problems. About five of the discs are scratched, and one of the case inserts has creases in it. Now I have to waste my time trying to get them to replace the scratched discs.

It's really disappointing that they would send out a product like this. Especially when they are price gouging people $175 in order to get the old dub.

Big series like this typically go OOP because something like that happens. To give another example, back in the day, Toei Animation blocked renewals and licensing requests for Sailor Moon which is why that went OOP. It went OOP before Geneon went under in late 2007 and before ADV restructured in September 2009. Then there's all those Aniplex titles FUNimation and Sentai lost because Aniplex Japan wouldn't allow them to renew the rights as confirmed by Jerome from Manga UK.

Here's a picture of one of the discs. It's kind of hard to see in pictures, but I can tell the scratches are significant enough to cause skipping on at least 3 of the discs.
