That’s not quite true.
EX is Dolby’s format and ES is DTS’s. They have different names simply because they’re formats for an additional channel from different companies before 7.1 was a thing. Dolby always had EX as an additional matrix’ed surround channel and DTS had ES as an additional channel, sometimes discrete and sometimes matrix’ed. One of the first DVD editions of Titanic had its audio remix as a 5.1 Dolby Digital EX, later the DVD special edition added a discrete DTS-ES 6.1 mix. The audio on The Incredibles has a DTS-HD MA ES Matrix 5.1 mix. |

____________________________ For the record, if I'm not mistaken, the first two feature DTS-HD MA 7.1 with no object-based option. Coco 1080P Blu has DTS-HD MA 7.1, but the 4K has Dolby TrueHD 7.1 with the optional object-based (Atmos). |

You won’t be able to make a good comparison using screencaps since for the UHD they would have to get converted to SDR and a different color gamut, which automatically negates two of the three benefits of UHD: better dynamic range, better colors, and better definition.

dts-ES 5.1 matrix and dts-ES 6.1 discrete ... I just refreshed my memory by looking in my instructions manual. • https://www.lifewire.com/what-is-dts-es-1846890
With auro3d dtsX and atmouse we are allowed to have gaps of memory and work together for a better world. |

Was curious to A/B the differences. Pretty much how I expected, the UHD blows away the BD by any comparison (in terms of PQ). Note these are phone pics and shouldn't be taken as gospel - but we know that right?
![]() Shot #1 - Detail BD: [Show spoiler] UHD: [Show spoiler] Look at the more immediate detail - the hairs, Dash's freckles, the slight texturing on Mr. Incredible's face. Shot #2 - HDR BD: [Show spoiler] UHD: [Show spoiler] Not too much more highlights but look at the stone wall behind them: the BD almost washes out the detail but it's all there on the UHD. Shot #3 - compression BD: [Show spoiler] UHD: [Show spoiler] Look at how fine the edges are on the BD compared to the UHD (I cheated a little cause it's not the same exact frame but boohoo). It's even more visible in motion: the drill becomes a blur on the BD but is super textured on the UHD. Also look at the sky in the background and see how much tighter it is. The Incredibles is the oldest CG animated film on UHD now, made from a 2004 2K DI. If any film wouldn't be expected to have more detail on UHD, it would be this one - but as you can see, it's not the case. Bottom line people: just cause it's an upscale doesn't mean it's not worth buying. Also I sold the digital code for $15 and my old BD for $5. Only cost me $10 to upgrade ![]() |
