Casino (Universal, HDR10 @ 1000 nits white/0.005 nits black) I know Pyoko did this one a few years back but I couldn't resist having a look at it myself. Absolutely magnificent HDR and WCG usage. Awaken (Gunpowder & Sky, HDR10 and Dolby Vision)
It tries to look pretty and that's it. This is something you'd use in a store to sell TVs. The black dot in the sun in the waterfall shot (#13) is part of the image. It really looks like that on the disc and is caused by an integer overflow. This can happen with heavy SDR grading but I've never seen this in HDR before. 9:22-9:42 - Highlights on the minister's face are usually blown out (very little detail) 2:09:00-2:09:40 - Ghostly figures are blown out and difficult to see. That and the magic wand effects are missing gradients in brightness The reason I ask is people (myself included) usually blame this on the TV's tone mapping or brightness capabilities but maybe detail got wiped out when it was graded for HDR. That's really the question. Last edited by trevorlj; 08-05-2023 at 11:08 PM. |

Taxi Driver I spent way too much time on this one. We had a short discussion on a different forum regarding the color of the blood during the shootout scene as it was heavily altered for the original release to avoid an X rating. To fully see what was going on with this film I ended up comparing it to the old Blu-Ray, which is based on the very same restoration but still has a slightly different color rendition. At first glance the UHD may seem rather bright but looking at the regular Blu it was pretty bright in the first place so they are perfectly comparable. Not a regular Sony light cannon title. Highlights tend to get brighter and are never clamped. While the BD was very fine for sure I feel the UHD is the ultimate presentation. ![]() I got some help from a friend of mine who made minor changes to the scripts, so it can now load screenshots directly off my Google Drive and upload the final heatmaps and gamut visualizations to it as well. Saves me plenty of time considering how slow Google Colab uploads are while Google Drive is instant. Let me know if anyone here (including Dorian of course) wants to get the modified scripts. |

Reservoir Dogs (Lionsgate Films, HDR10 and Dolby Vision FEL)
4000 nits white, 0.005 nits black MaxCLL: 341 nits MaxFALL: 57 nits Very similar to the SDR presentation in terms of brightness. However the increase in resolution is really incredible this time around. Kind of surreal to see a low-budget 90s film look this sharp with a nearly crazy amount of fine detail. Colors are a bit on the red side but I like it. Heatmaps [Show spoiler] Gamut visualization [Show spoiler] Tonemap (BT.2100 to BT.709 using Davinci) [Show spoiler]

The upload speeds for Google Colab are awful. It was jarring enough for me and I only did it a few times to ensure the code executes correctly. Respect to you, Macatouille, and anyone else who has contributed. |

Lucy (Universal Pictures, HDR10)
1000 nits white, 0.005 nits black MaxCLL: 1000 nits MaxFALL: 400 nits Highlights are just as clipped in HDR as SDR, but rather the brighter elements are brightened to give more pop. It might as well just be an SDR to HDR conversion. When comparing it to SDR with 203 nits peak white, averages are very similar to that already bright Blu-Ray. At the same time blacks are generally lifted and make shadow detail more obvious on the HDR presentation. Pretty mixed considering how cranked the contrast looks otherwise. Colors do exceed BT.709 on occasion but is mostly within. The overall brighter image prevents colors from having major saturation which seems to be fully intentional. The low-pass filter on the regular Blu-Ray causes the image to have a generally soft appearence and was thankfully fixed on the UHD, making the differences in sharpness rather striking throughout most of the film. That's the main advantage of the UHD to me. This is a disc that seems to be many people's favorite and while I can see the appeal, I always felt like the movie has a rather sterile look to it. It feels more like watching a nature film than a feature film. If that's your game then this is a very safe bet. The last heatmap show some additional clipping in SDR. I double checked and can confirm that the brighter highglights are within the WTW range. Thus it's not visible when converted from Legal levels to Data levels but will of course be visible on a properly calibrated setup. Cleaned up the code for the gamut notebook. Should run better now but feel free to alter it as you wish.
Also added the option to specify a Google Drive folder containing the screenshots as nissling suggested. Last edited by dorian; 08-07-2023 at 02:45 AM. |

Just like with Reloaded, lots of bright highlights (but the whole movie isn't overly elevated) and tons of shots exceeding Rec. 709 and P3:

Giant (Warner, HDR10)
4000 nits white, 0.005 nits black MaxCLL: 1559 nits MaxFALL: 126 nits I love this film, and this UHD is overall pretty fantastic in just about every regard. The only drawback is the lack of sharpness in the opticals which are rather frequent unfortunately. Since it's part of the film there's not much that can be done to it unless all the unaltered source elements are still available. And even if, recreating all fades, zooms, titles etc is extremely time consuming if you don't want it to appear to have been digitally manipulated. Still, Warner is getting it just right. The Shining (HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision MEL)
4000 nits white, 0.005 nits black MaxCLL: 1633 nits MaxFALL: 114 nits It may even be slightly brighter than A Clockwork Orange but in a rightful way. Was kind of surprised by the green tint on the remastered Blu-Ray but at least it's gone on UHD-BD and that's all I care for. Seems like most opticals and titles have been recreated digitally.
