This case stacks the discs, so I put the 4k on the bottom. Overall I think this is a very attractive package. I will probably watch this tonight. I'm not the most eagle eyed reviewer but I notice DNR right away and Paramount always leave me a bit frightened of what they might have done ![]() At least the discs are made in Germany. Avoids having to worry about Freddy K. fingering them. Last edited by iaragorn1; 09-03-2023 at 09:45 PM. |

Watched Sleepy Hollow blu.
It's a good movie. Burton is so great with visuals and atmosphere, but sometimes the horror feels surface level. I think that is because Burton doesn't focus enough on the story and characterizations, so the violence in the movie doesnt carry much of any real horror beyond the visual gore itself. Burton is a stylist for the most part and his style adds a lot to his movies, but sometimes him being such a stylist gets in the way of some of his films reaching greatness. I think. My favorite Burton movie might always end up being Big Adventure. I'd probably give Sleepy Hollow 3 1/2 stars out of 5. It's pretty solid, but not fully engaging from start to finish. I probably will still upgrade. Last edited by rocknblues81; 09-04-2023 at 02:00 AM. |

Well, since all of those 33 pages came before the release of the UHD, I'm not sure what you think people should have talked about. I'd say there's 33 pages of talk about the expectations of the transfer and the packaging, which seem perfectly normal for this forum. I would have expected a little more discussion of Star Wars and whether the US or European cut of the Shining is better, but that's about it.

I watched this a while ago.
I dont remember how the blu-ray looked but I think that this transfer serves the movie really well. I would even go as far and say that this is one of my favourite looking releases so far. There is some DNR usage indeed but it did not bother me. This is also far from being a colourful/bright movie so there are not really any memorable HDR highlights. I also think that this is one of the best movies of Burton and I would imagine that the fans are really going to like how this looks. I certainly did but I can also understand if some folks may feel underwhelmed. |

I watched this film last night after not having revisited it for a long time. Overall I think the 4k wasn't bad. I never had the original blu and while I don't recall what it looked like at the theater, it does have some grain and some scenes do have a bunch of swirlies in the background if you look for it. Depp's face is full of pock marks and pores and this screenshot shows that https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&...17013&i=16&l=0
This movie isn't as old as "The Birds" but it has that sort of look to it. It isn't sharp, kind of a diffused autumnal look and there is obviously lots of digital backgrounds going on and whatever digital shenanigans Paramount used are sort of blended into the picture. And I have to wonder if they didn't use bleach bypass or some gels on some shots. This is a very stylized picture. I regret not having seen this for a while and have forgotten just how much I enjoyed it. I kind of wish I waited a month and half to watch together with another Burton film TNBC |

I remember when this was coming out,in an interview Tim Burton said he did this movie when Superman Lives fell apart.Worked out good I think. He still got paid his Pay or Play Contract for Superman and got to do this film instead.

Just watched this.
Film: A- I had seen this years ago, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it still holds up. The cinematography, the acting, the subtle tongue-in-cheek dark humor, the directing. It oozes with an almost-palpable atmosphere, perfect for the fall season. Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci play off each other quite well, and the film is overall very entertaining with some great horror sequences and an impressive production design evoking a great period piece as well. Picture 4 / 5: The picture is overall… fine. It suffers from the usual less-than-adequate / deficient Paramount encodes of their releases of catalogue titles on 4K disc, but thankfully it never quite drops to the levels of The Core or of The Firm. In darker areas, which thankfully the bulk of the visuals reside, grain is resolved decently, providing the image with a nice filmic quality. It is in bright areas where the encode cannot seem to keep up, and the grain either starts to look digitally noisy bordering on macroblocking, or it seems more DNR’ed with little-to-no grain. If you pause it it looks worse, and it becomes more apparent on bigger displays as well. While there has been some grain management done, I believe the shots with absent grain are more due to the encode just dropping the grain, and it is likely due to the bitrate not being as dynamic as it could have been (look at the bitrate chart on caps-a-holic, it never really goes over 100mbps except for maybe barely once or twice, when the average bitrate could have very well accommodated for higher, if brief, peaks to keep up with the more challenging brighter areas). Otherwise, black levels are deep, inky, and very nicely gradational, with a very brooding atmosphere that compliments the cinematography exquisitely well. HDR is subtle for the most part in terms of “pop”. Some brighter object like reflections of the sun against walls, candles, fires, etc, do contrast better than they could in an SDR grade, but overall the gains are more in better shadow detail that still maintains deep blacks. Fine detail is good overall but not outstanding due to the nature of the source. It is soft by intention and it compliments the surreal and very stylized visuals. It certainly looks better than the standard blu-rays, but that was not a difficult task to accomplish. Overall, it’s fine; not bad, not terrible, but definitely not great or excellent, and definitely not perfect either. Even though I enjoyed watching it on this new restoration and transfer, it can look better, and hopefully in time a boutique label like Arrow will license it and give it a better encode. Audio: 4.5 / 5: Even though there is no optional 3D audio mix included, the lossless 5.1 mix is quite satisfying. The galloping of the various horses throughout the film, especially of the headless horseman’s, carry some nice weight curtesy of the subwoofer. Clarity is outstanding overall even if some of the louder sounds can loose a bit of it. The surrounds are used to excellent effect with the music and atmospherics creating a more immersive environment that nicely compliments the gothic tone and atmosphere of the film. Dialogue is never lost in the action. Gunshots are sharp and feel appropriately heavy. I wish Paramount had included an optional 3D audio remix, the way Sony usually does, to provide even more immersion, but this one is no slouch. Overall: All in all, it’s overall alright / ok. The picture can look better with better compression, but it is nonetheless an upgrade over the (pretty bad) standard blu-rays, and it never dips to the awful quality of some of Paramount’s other 4K encodes. For the right price I would recommend it. It is a great film in various artistic and technical aspects, and in motion the compression artifacts aren’t huge eye-sores. The 5.1 mix holds up and it is a great disc to play during the fall season. Recommended with the aforementioned caveats. |
