Oh nice! I haven’t checked specific prices in a while but they used to be high. I just know the general price trend for GameCube games has been increasing since the start of the pandemic. I guess the price for super mario sunshine got a little more reasonable thanks to the 3D All-Stars release. Thanks for the heads up! Ima picking one up for Xmas.

And yes, I was talking about the RE ports on GameCube.

GameCube stuff is definitely beginning to balloon! Fortunately bigger selling titles haven't been affected all that much to rise above MSRP. There's still a few I never bought back in the day and have been grabbing when possible. My general rule of thumb now is grab when cheap if I really want it, cuz who knows what'll happen in a week or months or a year. Applies to movies too!

Glad I bought RE2 for $30 years ago from a game store. Even though it's not my favorite port it's the only *working* physical version I have (I have the OG PC port but thing is a pain in the ass to run).

GC stuff has been on the rise while N64 games have been coming down. With Nintendo products, it seems to be a generational surge more than a rarity surge in prices. Gamecube games will probably drop in the next couple of years when the Wii generation gets older and starts to increase those prices. It happened with NES to SNES, SNES to N64, and now N64 to GC aftermarket prices, and it's reasonable to think it'll happen with GC to Wii sooner or later as well.

Bought Sunshine off my friend for $10 years ago, which was very cool.
That specific copy has some nostalgia for me too, because I use to always play it at his house and borrow it from him.
Asked to buy it during highschool years, that was ps3/4 era, so assumed he probably wasn't playing GC anymore and wouldn't miss it.

Managed to fill out my Zelda gamecube collection over the past couple of years through ebay though, kept my eye out and got good prices on most things.
Was shocked to see how expensive four swords adventure is for PAL systems, figured that was the least popular. Lucky for me that's the one Zelda game I already had, got it as a gift when I was a kid.

Demand increases and reveals how little numbers some titles were produced. Gotcha Force copies sat around for years until people decided they wanted it...look how that went! lmao

So I believe the customers who are griping that because GKids (or Funi, or whomever) didn't pay for the license of FMttM are absolutely justified in being upset that there's missing content from these new sets. How can anyone criticize customers, let alone Eva fans, for giving negative feedback about some ultra-bad ass collector's edition that costs all sorts of money, that's even being released in all sorts of different bluray editions across all the different world markets, and how it's missing basic elements from the original releases? I'm an Eva fan, and I didn't buy any of these new sets for a few reasons on top of FMttM not being included. Can I not tell anyone why I didn't, in the hopes that one day a better release might come out? Should people like me just be labelled as "trolls" and "unappreciative babies" because we have gripes? That's not how business works in any format or medium.

"Take what we give you, and don't cry about it," is not a good business motto. Cause that's the general consensus of licensors and licensor apologists posting about these Eva sets. I say either release this new, worldwide and costly bluray set as the best possible release for the sake of the collector's you're banking on paying for it, or don't and don't get mad when those fans who would have unquestionably purchased it tell you why they didn't. It's not like what's missing from these new blurays are lost in some cave-like archive and can't be found. Japan has had the original intro on their own bluray sets for some years now, even. So elements are just behind a lousy pay wall that companies didn't want to pony up any cash for versus them not being able to.

Personally, I don't want a redub, I don't want a resub, I don't want an updated dub, I don't want a touched up dub, I don't want a generic intro song, and I certainly don't want to pay $50-$500 for a set of this stuff that I don't want. If I can't be allowed to say that to a company, then what chance is there of them releasing what I do want in their next bad ass collector's set release of this series?
I think the problem could have been solved by the company being upfront and honest in a well-publicized press release on how much licensing the song would have cost, and why they couldn't feasibly do it. That kind of transparency would have squelched most of the public dissent. Instead we have people coming here every week wondering why the song wasn't included.

I don’t think it would’ve mattered. The very fact “Fly Me to the Moon” isn’t included is license enough for people to b*tch.

Paying $200 and $300 for each set SHOULD have been able to offset the cost of licensing the song!

Wrong. Each instance of the song is over $100,000 x how many times the song is used in the series. There's just no way.

Evangelion may have a very passionate fanbase, but it’s still a niche product in the grand scheme of things, even compared to some other anime like DBZ and the Ghibli films (even there, it took Disney quite a while to clear Olivia Newton John’s cover of Take Me Home, Country Roads for Whisper of the Heart). I can easily see why licensing the song would’ve been off the table for GKIDS, Anime Ltd, and Madman, even if they combined their resources. It should’ve been on Khara to pay for it, but it’s possible it would’ve been a tall order, even for them.

Either way, it was a lot, and I understand why it wasn't included. Would have been nice if they could have done what Funi did for Eden of the East and included it just once. I know, there's different versions after every episode, but having at least one version would have been something, at least; it would have made the set feel more complete, even if it wasn't definitive.

$250k is over $100,000.

Nobody here knows the exact number. Just that it's much higher than most are willing to believe making it ludicrous to expect a company to license it for a niche title.

ADV was able to release Eva back in the day without issue.
A shame Gkids can't fork over the cash. They have deep pockets. Right?

I'm not gonna keep beating a dead horse, but there were ways they could have at least tried. Cuz even if you didn't want to use Kickstarter, or some kind of dedicated customer/payment plan, they could have used some kind of pre-order program to offset the cost. Look at how Funi was strong arming DBz fans with that ultimate collectors edition to get it made through a pre-order system. The cost of the music rights for Eva could have at least been mentioned to fans right off the bat if they did something similar, and it would have then been on the customers/fans to get it licensed at that point. But no. Nothing was said, and the choice was taken out of fans hands and made for them not to include it in any way. And like linked above, just look at what fans are paying for older formats of the series. Do people really think that if they increased the limited sets by another $100 while they made sure to make 1000 of them that they wouldn't have sold out? It's not that far fetched to think fans woulda payed for it based on the secondary market sales as of late. It was just a lousy marketing decision to not let fans in on the planning for these new discs, imo.

Justin Sevakis wrote a thread about this on Twitter a while back, but basically in the earlier days of anime localization, international music licensing didn't go through the proper channels and they kinda just flew under the radar with it

But they won't sell for those high prices, and every now and again you'll see those same formats pop up for reasonable prices from sellers who just want to get rid of their stuff. Eva will probably always be expensive because these edits won't be going away. And I bet those older format prices are only going to be as expensive as they are right now until the "No FMttM!" hype has died down in another year or so. They'll still be expensive when they do drop. But they won't be as expensive as the prices are now.
It's not just the lack of FMTTM. It's also again, the ADV and Manga dubs being exclusive to expensive limited premium releases which when sold out will become even more expensive as they were printed in lower quantities than DVDs ADV printed for a long time. There's also the lack of the OA versions of Episodes 21-24. Because of this, the DVDs will remain expensive, and the VHS tapes even more so. They saw a further price increase after the series hit Netflix (Evangelion has been expensive since 2013 after RightStuf's stock of the Platinum thinpak ran out, the series went OOP at the end of 2011), and they still remain expensive even after the Blu-ray went up for pre-order and after the Blu-ray came out.

The FUNimation Rebuild releases will also remain expensive if the original FUNimation dubs end up in a similar situation if they end up exclusive to an expensive limited release.
