Hmm. Not joining them in football, yet committing to five annual football games against ACC schools. That's like marrying someone but you can still date others.

Only Notre Dame.

Once the NBC contract runs out, they'll jump on full-time.

But now the ACC might need to find another basketball but independent (Navy, Army?) or non-FBS (Villanova) football school or go to a 3-division basketball conference.

I don't see them joining full-time. If they wanted to join a conference full-time it would have been much more lucrative to join the Big 10. Notre Dame made certain when the new playoff system was being discussed that they would have a chance at the game and are negotiating with the Orange Bowl for an at-large spot and it doesn't make sense to do all that work if they just plan to join the ACC full-time in 2015 (which is when their NBC contract expires).

Not for just about any sport not called football.

Big Ten schools received almost $25 million last year in TV money and that number is rising every year. In the ACC's new TV deal each school is set to receive $17 million each year through 2027, and while the deal will be renegotiated with Notre Dame's arrival it's still not going to get as high as the Big Ten's current number, much less the amount the Big Ten could get if they added Notre Dame and likely Rutgers to expand their presence further east.

This is a big gain for the ACC. Having Notre Dame as a 'half' member for football is certainly going to help the stability of the conference. I do think eventually they will officially join the conference as a football member. It'll be interesting to see how much this will increase their TV deal with ABC/ESPN. As an ACC guy, this is a good day.

They also increased the exit fee to $50 million, which makes it virtually impossible for any team to leave the conference.

BC is already in the ACC.

I'm surprised the schools signed off on that kind of exit fee. That's a MASSIVE number. I guess the days of schools changing conferences are over. (At least the big conferences)

Its the same effect as those locked in television contracts that the other big conferences have. Things will stablize. The big question now becomes, does the ACC need to grab a 16th member? Obviously, the ND deal answers the football question, if only for 5 games/year. Do they go for another football school? And if so, who?

Maybe BYU. That is assuming it is between them and the Big East. Although there are talks, there is very little to support that BYU will go to the Big East.

The ACC better not stretch to Utah. ND is far enough.

I just don't see BYU making sense geographically. That would massively increase travel costs and missed class time as BYU is over half the country away from any ACC schools.

I think the ACC shouldn't make a decision until it's decided for certain whether Notre Dame is definitely not going to join the conference for football. On the Scott Van Pelt Show today they were suggesting that the ACC and ESPN should offer Notre Dame a massive amount to join the conference full-time for all sports when their NBC contract expires in 2015. If they could get Notre Dame for football then they'd want to add another school with an FBS football team but if Notre Dame remains independent then it would make sense to go for a school without an FBS football team like Georgetown, Providence, St. John's, or Villanova.

The spread between those teams, geographically, completely skipped my mind.

Silly Notre Dame. That school is like the former prom queen who goes to the class reunion 80 pounds fatter and still thinking she's the hottest thing around despite not looking good in decades. That's ND football in a nutshell.

It's a huge fan base with unbelievable revenue. One day they will be relevant again, and I think the ACC is very smart to be flirting with them.

I wonder if this addition triggers a contract re-negotiation for the ACC? I mean, 5 guaranteed games against the Irish is definitely revenue generating.

It's believed a renegotiation will take place. Notre Dame equals money for everyone in the conference.
