I did like Nightmare Alley though I thought it was a bit meh, I’ll give it another shot to see if I like it more on second watch.

It was a lot funnier and more entertaining than I expected; streets ahead of the mediocre Red Notice, despite some similarities in Reynolds' Deadpool-like tics.

It's a good film but at times I find it way to dark to see what's going on at times.

I think I called it an X-Files movie without Mulder and Scully.

It's always been notoriously dark on home video. I new master might help, but not sure we'll get one.

I’ve got it and yeah pretty dark but I don’t think it’s as dark as the darkness that is Aliens vs predator requiem

That is the bench mark for dark. Not even the best OLED TV IN the WORLD can handle that black

Picked up in HMV:

Petite Maman comes with a lovely matt slip; it's also a BD-50, which is pretty generous for a 72 minute film with only two audio tracks!

Still no sign of Written on the Wind

A film that I have loved ever since I saw it on VHS in the 90s.

How long is the director Q&A on the disc? Usually the Q&A also streams with the film on their service, but as the website lists a 73 minute running time, that might not actually be the case here. Though the MUBI website does link to a 3 minute Moviegoing Memories piece with Sciamma hosted on their YouTube.

Was an interesting cinema experience - ODEON didn’t show the film in many screens, but they did show it nationally as part of Screen Unseen - was a packed screen and many ended up walking out just because it was French. It happened in waves where some would leave after 5 minutes, then a few others would take them leaving as a cue to also leave, then after 10 minutes another group of people might leave.

It isn’t among my absolute favourites of the year, and I think Sciamma has done a better job in other films like Portrait - but it’s still strong and in my top 60 and I might even appreciate it more on a rewatch.

Interestingly, the UK Blu is released a month before NEON releases the film to US cinemas! My impression is it’s been MUBI’s most successful release so far, sticking around in minor chains and indies for weeks and months.

Also some of the music is very catchy, though I think I preferred Mathon’s cinematography in Spencer.

For kids that are able to read subtitles I think it might be great for them and not too demanding for them (though Sciamma has explored childhood before with Tomboy, the screenplay for My Life as a Courgette and also explored being a teenager in Water Lilies and Girlhood.) But I also think it can be informed by an adult’s perspective knowing what adulthood and being a parent is like and looking back on the past.
