Was an interesting cinema experience - ODEON didn’t show the film in many screens, but they did show it nationally as part of Screen Unseen - was a packed screen and many ended up walking out just because it was French. It happened in waves where some would leave after 5 minutes, then a few others would take them leaving as a cue to also leave, then after 10 minutes another group of people might leave. It isn’t among my absolute favourites of the year, and I think Sciamma has done a better job in other films like Portrait - but it’s still strong and in my top 60 and I might even appreciate it more on a rewatch. Interestingly, the UK Blu is released a month before NEON releases the film to US cinemas! My impression is it’s been MUBI’s most successful release so far, sticking around in minor chains and indies for weeks and months. Also some of the music is very catchy, though I think I preferred Mathon’s cinematography in Spencer. For kids that are able to read subtitles I think it might be great for them and not too demanding for them (though Sciamma has explored childhood before with Tomboy, the screenplay for My Life as a Courgette and also explored being a teenager in Water Lilies and Girlhood.) But I also think it can be informed by an adult’s perspective knowing what adulthood and being a parent is like and looking back on the past. |
