Don't concentrate on the finger or you will miss all that heavenly glory!

Joke aside, seriously enjoying this Criterion release. Watched The Big Boss and Fist of Fury back-to-back today along with the associated extras. Will continue the viewing on Friday hopefully.

Not only does it exist but it’s a significant improvement over the theatrical cut.

I don't think the theatrical cut should have seen theatres, such a waste by the studio, the home video equivalent of, "We'll fix it in post ..."

It's a bit late now, but who would have been the best bet for sending out Spidey early?

No, it was never intended for theatres: even before shooting started Scott said the plan was inspired by the extended DVDs of the LOTR films which were intended as home video exclusives, with footage expressly shot for home video only, a bit like the way Universal shot additional fooage for TV of films like Earthquake, Midway and Airport '79. It did get a nobody noticed, nobody came one week release in the States (as did Leone's cut of Once Upon a Time in America in 1984 after the cut US version bombed: the reviews for OUATIA were even worse than for the cut version).

The DC is better - though some alternate takes and line readings of scenes in both cuts aren't as good, especially in Ed Norton's scenes - but I don't mind the theatrical cut. Had the DC have been the one released I'm sure the US box-office would have been worse, so I can understand the financial reasoning.

I remember it mentioned at the time, but it ended up doing the picture a great disservice, as LotR had an audience built-in that would gravitate towards the extended cuts and they only increased in numbers after Fellowship of the Rings hit theatres.

Kingdom of Heaven didn't have that as the initial product just wasn't enough to bring masses of people back for future DVD releases, which is a shame as it should nearly be seen alongside Gladiator in the publics' eyes.

But it was an interesting idea, hoping public goodwill and the prominence of extended cuts on home video would succeed.

I think it's a much better film than Gladiator in every way, though it's a much harder sell - in the past quarter century it's generally the revenge driven epics that have performed at the US box-office, and a knights in tarnished armour post 9/11 not all Muslims are evil movie was always going to be a tough sell Stateside even before some idiot decided to aim it at the faith crowd with some very dishonest TV spots trying to sell it as everything from The Passion of the Christ II in an outrageous piece of false advertising involving adding a “Don’t worry, God is with me” line of dialogue not in the film (particularly ironic considering its Humanist viewpoint and the crisis of faith of its hero), a family movie, an epic adventure, a country and western rock video and a kick-ass heavy metal teen bloodbath: anything to avoid mentioning Muslims or, God forbid, history. Being what seemed like the umpteenth Orlando Bloom siege flick probably didn't help: maybe if they'd waited for first choice Russell Crowe to be available...

Now it's an almost nostalgic nod to that brief shining moment when what's now a declining market was a strong enough mainstream mass market for studios to sign off on tens of millions of dollars worth of additional scenes just to get that double-dip home video money - a complete reversal of the 60s and 70s mentality when epics would get shorter after their roadshow runs as they were edited down for 'popular prices' runs and TV screenings. We shall ne'er see their like again.
