The Final Destination (blu-ray)
1 out of 5 stars

Garbage. Not that the franchise is anything but frivolous fun, but this one was downright weak.

I was laughing at Jhiggys hate.

I liked Kill Bill 1, and loved Inglourious Baterds.

Everything else ranges from Meh to hate.

Dude. Is it just "On" in the background while you are there, or are you actually sitting there "watching" it....paying attention?

I will only "allow" myself to watch The Fountain once a year so that it will remains fresh as long as possible.

Same thing with a group of serious, emotional and dark films.

I was thinking earlier, gosh, didn't George Lucas rip off a whole bunch of stuff making his movies?

At least QT has decent stories and entertainment value to go with his "homages," most of the time.

Received my copy of “Psycho,” the UK Blu-Ray Steelbook. I put it in to see how it looks…and I couldn’t take it out.

The movie is a classic for sure! The cinematography is gorgeous, the acting is top-notch, writing is fantastic, many scenes are iconic, and the film itself broke many barriers at its time. It is a bit tame by today’s standards, but it still carries enough suspense and cinematic power to remain timeless.

I’ve seen the shower scene quite a few times before; it seems clichéd in a way these days, having been imitated or parodied so many times. But seeing it on its own merits, it actually gave me a decent chill regardless. Some of the imagery seems like something that could have come from a modern film (like the way the lady grabs the shower curtain; so very dramatic!).

Personally, this film currently comes as my second-favorite Hitchcock film, despite its prestige (first being “North By Northwest,” because I’m a bigger sucker for adventures than horror/thrillers). My major gripe is that the first half drags a little; it is an interesting exercise in suspense and cinematography, but it seems to take a little while to get to Norman’s motel. Some of this setup seems unnecessary to me,
[Show spoiler]considering that Marion dies anyway
. Afterward though, it picks up really good and gets really deep. I still wouldn’t say that the story is exceptional, but it showcases Norman Bates really well, and the rest of the characters are okay (maybe that’s done on purpose, to trivialize the killer’s victims and force us to see them through his eyes…hmmm….).

Anyway, it’s great.

4.5/5 (entertainment: 4.5/5, story: 4/5, film: 5/5, i/e: 2/5)

As far as I can tell, this Blu-Ray looks awesome. From the start, I was impressed by the sharpness and level of detail; I was like “holy crap, I can see Janet Leigh’s arm hair!” On close inspection, some scenes seem a bit soft (I honestly can’t tell if DNR has been applied or not; I want to say yes, since some scenes had less facial details, but then again some scenes look way sharper and film grain is at least half-way intact all the way through), and I could see the occasional speck or film artifact. Contrast is excellent. It's not reference quality, but certainly close to Criterion-quality; in retrospect, it’s probably similar to “North By Northwest’s” PQ. The audio sounded fine to me.

PQ: 4.5/5, AQ: 4.5/5

Yep. Haven't checked to see if the extras are yet (of which there are a good amount of), but I'm sure they will be. It's Universal, so it's all good!

EDIT: Yep, the extras are region-free too.

I have enjoyed some of his thievery because of what he does with it.

He steals components of other directors work (because he is over the top in love with it) and assembles a working collage. This is what is origional about him. Not the core ideas, or core story, or camera work, or lighting, or music, it's the collage that is his idea and creation. And thats how I judge him....did the collage work?

When someone can blend a Spaghetti Western, with Anime, with Noir, with Kung Fu, with 70's detective cheese and Nazis and make it flow, I give some credit.

Yes, the opening scene of Inglourious Basterds is a HUGE blatant ripoff, but it is also beautiful and flawlessly executed. I remember thinking to myself, "If I were Sergio Leone, I would feel honored/complimented by what I am seeing".

Has he been hyped beyond the stratosphere? Yes.

good point. 3 different things here.

idea derivation (ok): take idea A, idea B, idea C, and form your own idea D. use idea D in your film and you get credit for your idea.

rip off: take idea A from someone else, and directly use it in your film without any creative input. you get credit for someone else's idea.

tribute (ok): take idea A from someone else, and directly use it in your film with a blatant reference to the creator, so everyone knows whose idea it is. the original creator gets credit for their idea.
