![]() High chance OrbitDVD may get the 4K listed @ $39.99 or lesser but Amz price drop on the current pre-order of BD is inevitable as well. |

![]() Shame this is only on DVD in most of the world as the 155 minute runtime absolutely struggles being squeezed onto a DVD, even from a distance I noticed compression artefacts at points, which is frustrating because lots of the cinematography is gorgeous. Can’t imagine the Nova Blu is easy to come by either. Definitely a little odd watching in 2022, both because some of the language around autism has shifted, and because the transition between Bush and Obama is a key plot element. |

After doing a raid on Amazon Germany's 6 for 30 Euros, I finally picked up a copy of 1998's disastrous movie adaptation of The Avengers. I imported the American DVD back when it was still the exciting new format of the moment, and maybe that's what has given me the twinge of nostalgia whenever I watch it. Sure, it's a very shoddy piece of filmmaking, with utterly lifeless lead actors who lack even a particle of chemistry, and the pacing is off, the plot developments completely illogical and it has the general feeling that everything's an effort, but I still have a degree of affection for it.
Most know that it was hacked down by over half an hour, leading to reshoots in an attempt to plug the holes in the missing information (Thurman being Connery's niece, whom he has lusted over for years, leading him to create a robot version instead of having the real thing, etc) and change the direction (Thurman is has been cloned to gain access to the company she worked for) whilst compressing the running time. Poor old Roger Lloyd-Pack was completely cut from the final film when the entire opening sequence was nixed. Never before has a trailer contained so much stuff deleted from the final edit - both the film and the trailer opens with Thurman's original introductory shot, with a lingering pan up her entire body in the catsuit! It's one of those films where, if you watch it in seclusion, you'll enjoy it. I watched it with my wife about two years ago on the Sci-Fi Channel, and I was mortified as all its deficiencies were thrust in your face like a yob with a broken bottle on a Bank Holiday weekend. If only someone could come up with an edit where they can double the speed of every line delivery from Thurman, and it might just give it a little more energy. As great an actor as Fiennes is, he's just wrong for the role, failing to capture the bouncy charm Patrick McNee brought to it. In his one scene, where McNee easily bests Fiennes with only his voice, you know that there was something wrong in casting him through the Oscar success of The English Patient alone. Similarly, Eileen Atkins impresses more with her few scenes than the two leads manage with the rest of the film. The German title of all iterations of The Avengers (including The New...) has always been the rather unwieldy moniker of "With Umbrella, Charm and Bowler Hat". The movie certainly has a brolly and a bowler, but the other element is pitifully lacking. avde.jpg Last edited by CompleteCount; 04-15-2022 at 10:49 AM. |
