"Eye" think so too!
And definitely part of Criterion's (uncredited) Preston Sturges catalog, although not sure if they've still got "Unfaithfully Yours" and "The Lady Eve".

(We now reserve space for the posts of "Maybe they're doing Oz: the Great and Powerful because Disney screwed up!")

Imagine Samantha and Darren Stevens, with Sturges snark. (Again, not in the credits, but you'll know it when you hear it. )

My guess as well, though I've yet to see it.

From what I remember I Married a Witch was pleasant enough but fairly innocuous. It will be interesting to see how they spin its inclusion.

Not that I have any issues with them releasing it, mind you. I could choke a small deer with my wishlist of unimportant, non-influential films I wish they'd release. Hell, if this cartoon was a ghost and a chicken wearing a suit I'd be outside dancing right now

I hope that is good news for HMA, but for me the more even more exciting prospects from the list are restored The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg and The Last Detail.

I read that early, and good god, I hope so. My second most wanted Criterion upgrade.

I'd be much more excited to have The Umbrellas of Cherbourg from that list....I hope that's an indication for that title too (and I'd really like Hiroshima)

Huh. I went on a tangent and thought it perhaps meant a release of Starewicz's animation.

The doodle was a little on the nose this month...

I did watch Badlands today for the first time.

I thought it was really a visually splendid film, which is somewhat of a no-brainer considering its coming from Malick (who has a very uncharacteristic cameo). Malick manages to paint a fairy tail land laced with innocence and unflinching murder. It may seem like an odd juxtaposition but it works so well. The classic Malick characteristics are all present even if the film does have much more of a coherent narrative than the rest of his filmography, the introspective narration, the cutaway shots to plants and animals and the sweeping landscapes.

One minor technical beef was that it sounded like a lot of the dialogue was dubbed in with ADR, and it was noticeable. The essay confirmed that they were forced to use a low quality camera that did not capture useable quality sound, its a shame because the ADR is not very fluent. Not a deal breaker by any stretch however.

Umbrellas of Cherbourg is nice, but I'll take Hiroshima Mon Amour.

Great summary. In my opinion, all Malick films are equal in greatness. This movie and Apocalypse Now are my favorite Martin Sheen films. And then you have Warren Oates and Sissy Spacek in the same movie.

About a year and and half ago, I had Badlands in my wish list for future criterion releases (I mentioned it in this thread). I was very glad criterion pick the title up, because the DVD had a terrible transfer.
[Show spoiler]I knew that the scene with the burning house would like amazing on blu ray; it sure did
.

With the releases of Repo Man (Emilio Estevez) and Badlands (Martin Sheen), the only family member missing from the Sheen family is Charlie. (well besides Ramon and Renee, correct me if I am wrong)

Charlie is actually in Being John Malkovich. So the whole family is actually in the Collection.

Nice review! I've been thinking about Malick stuff constantly over the past couple of weeks since seeing To the Wonder. It's tough to rank them, but Badlands is right up there somewhere on top.

As for the hint in the newsletter...

If Criterion were to release a dog food commercial starring Veronica Lake, I would probably buy it. I Married a Witch sounds like a fun addition to my collection, and I eagerly await a Blu-ray of Sullivan's Travels at some point.

Nicholas Stoller's Top Ten is...quite different from my own Criterion Top Ten. It takes all kinds to make the label go 'round, though.

Speaking of Malick-Does anyone else here like The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford? I think it's a fascinating Malick-like film.

Great movie! It's so low-key and beautiful.

I have to admit, though, I love the parody video, The Assassination of Yogi Bear by the Coward Boo-Boo, almost as much.
Check it out...

The parody video actually makes me quite sad with the music and the emotion conveyed in the eyes of the characters...and then I see the very end.

I love Stoller's movies. They're very refreshing compared to some of the comedy crap that gets released these days.

I loved his description for Being John Malkovich.

Anyone know where I can find a hi res cover art for Last Year at Marienbad? As expected it arrived in the mail with some serious battle scars. A link to a jpeg would be appreciated.
