You guys panicking are crazy. There w ill be no Bay or Nolan or Finch wtf. Disney will go the Marvel route and get a relatively unknown young director/writer for the new trilogy. Spielberg is about the only big name director I see them pursuing but even then I think theyll more than likely go with a fresh face.

Bringing PJ in would be too complicated, what with his base of operations being in New Zealand, along with his own special effects company and production facilities.
Brad Bird actually wouldn't be a bad choice. Hell, he might even shoot it partially in IMAX cameras, just because he can.

And from what I heard, they aren't touching Indy, they think it's a done film franchise, well besides the merchandising, it's done

I was thinking that too, but my feeling is that he's just given up. He's probably tired of being hated by the fan universe and he's probably frustrated that "Red Tails" did nothing at the boxoffice.

Lucas is 68. While he could easily live another 20 years (assuming he's not ill), he probably also thought that if he dies before he sells the company, the future of the company would be in question (and probably litigation) for years. It leaves a mess for his kids. This way, everything is tidied up.

Also, Kathleen Kennedy probably wanted to make more movies and not just handle merchandising deals. I bet she also pushed him to make a deal. She's becoming the CEO of Lucasfilm.

Also, who knows how long this deal was in the works? I wondered in another post whether this deal was in the works when Steve Jobs was still alive. Jobs actually owned a majority of Disney by virtue of his selling Pixar to Disney. Although Jobs' widow is not on Disney's Board I believe that she owns enough stock to have had to approve this deal, although her stock will be diluted as a result of the shares being issued to Lucas. What hasn't been said is whether Lucas gets a seat on Disney's Board. My bet is that he does.

Not really. There's a very big difference between a few tweaks to existing work and ignoring the original source material when adapting something.

It's like an artist doing a few touch-ups on a painting. And someone painting the portrait of a woman and making her look like a man or robot.

His characters and stories are so middle-of-the-road. I still have no idea to this day way so many love him as much as they do. His stuff is just meh.

I would not want J.J. for SW. He's great right where he is with Star Trek (I just hope the new Khan has the lens flare turned down!).

Whatever you say, Beast. Good to see you're consistent (always in opposition to everyone and everything) no matter what the social environment is.

Well, you're talking to someone who caught the Whedon bug some twelve years ago, so I'm afraid I can't concur. I frakking love the man and his work. I actually thought The Avengers suffered somewhat because he wasn't really let off his leash to make it extra "Whedon-y".

But he's busy with Marvel, so I wouldn't worry.

So, on the issue of the Original Unaltered Trilogy getting released - here's my question. Do we think Disney could just take it upon themselves to put those originals out? Or would this all still have to be done through Lucasfilm's department, and thus still be a decision made by them (Kathleen Kennedy, specifically).

If it's anything like Marvel, it would be Lucasfilm handling that. And it would also require Fox's involvement.

So don't expect anything right away on that front. Until Disney pow-wows with Fox and reaches some agreement.

Well, Lucas no longer has power over the movies or the studio. Anything can happen now.

It is officially a SW thread ladies and gentlemen. The mods are clipping posts.

Is there a single SW thread on the planet where this does not have to be done?

The ones over at originaltrilogy.com? Oh wait, they probably clip the positive posts about the prequel trilogy.

All this time I kept wondering why the Avengers used the crappy "Anakin blows up the Battle Droid control ship" ending...It all makes sense now.

The plan seems to be another Trilogy, Eps. 7-9 follwing every 2-3 years as the previous trilogies were. It's kind of funny to see another trilogy start 10 years after the last one ended. Not sure if the Thrawn Trilogy would really work for me. Wouldn't mind seeing a mixture of Crimson Empire or Dark Empire.

But with this announcement, it's doubtful we'll get that live-action post Ep. III series. Looks like we'll get more Clone Wars as long as the ratings allow.

When that UOT hits my doorstep, I'll be dousing and lighting my current "filler" classic trilogy in something flammable, loading it on a clay pigeon thrower, and blasting burning disks out of the sky with my twelve-gauge.

I'm dead serious.
