Price issues aside--will these have noticably better picture quality.

I really don't know.

I have no idea.
There's a marginal difference from what I've seen of The Amazing Spider-Man and Ghostbusters. IMHO worth $10, but hang onto your original discs for the extras.

Thank you for that!

I was hoping for someone who had seen one as opposed to what they say it will look like.
For a good price i would like to buy one and see for myself--obviously wouldn't want to replace too many titles--again. LOL.

I don't have the discs yet, but I have seen plenty of comparisons for those two titles.

Thanks again--I judged you too harshly!

I see no reason not to spend a small amount to check out a new product--even if it's mostly hype.

I don't know if that will satisfy what Sony wants to achieve.

I appreciate it.

Sony is doing two things at once with these Mastered in 4K releases:

1) Giving people with 4K upconversion players and 4K TVs actual content.

2) Making some extra money with double dippers.

The studios' behavioral patterns haven't changed much from the DVD to Blu-ray days.

Disney: "Vaulting" movies, not lowering MSRPs for a lot of movies, etc.
Paramount: lackluster effort on anything other than Tom Cruise movies, flogging Star Trek with outdated masters
Sony: SuperBit ==> Mastered in 4K
Warner: flogging the same catalog titles over and over again

Wait, wait, wait!!

Are you saying that if a person owned a 4K TV they would get more benefit from the disc than the average person with a 1080p tv?
I really didn't think that was part of this products abilty.

If that's true, then that's very cool. Why shouldn't those early (and wealthy) adopters have something to see after they spent all that money? Darn, I'm behind the times--I didn't know there was such a thing as 4K upscaling. Been a while since i shopped for players.

Now I once again regret not being super wealthy.

Well sure, assuming the person has a BD player that supports 4K upconversion to go with their new 4K TV.

Well then if a person has a 4K set-up sees a real benefit---there's no way you can call it a gimmick. Niche maybe, but not a gimmick.

Indeed. We'll start seeing 4K TVs at affordable prices within the next 6 months to a year.

Does this mean I should hold off on getting the new Panasonic plasma?

I would. I just bought my Panasonic LED in November so I plan to wait. I have a total of 3 1080p displays anyway, which is more than enough.

These mastered in 4K titles along with other 35mm titles mastered in 4K and 65/70mm titles mastered in 6K or 8K will definitely look better upscaled on a 4K TV.

I know that, but not all of the HDTV I watch is shot in HD or in the case of TCM the best print.
