Write simply, please keep us posted on what you do this time. I'm willing to give it one more shot before sending to Sony (mainly because Im broke lol)
Also, everything still looks exactly like it did whn I first attempted the reflow so I didnt think about the heat spreader thing. I also need a new tube of the liquid gold in a tube lol. Does Best Buy sell the flux where the thermal paste is? Maybe Radio Shack? I dont have too many other options to purchase it around here. Thanks! |

Well, thought I'd bring everyone up to date on my experience with my 60GB that was sent off to JDElectronics. I sent the unit off UPS around June 5th, and they received it on Wednesday 6/10. I missed JDElectronics' follow-up phone call the next day, so I called them Friday expecting that the unit wasn't fixable. I was directed over the phone to a nice fella named Cody who informed me that the YLOD was fixed, but another prob had been found. When they tested the unit to make sure it worked they found that while the XMB would come up and you could navigate through the XMB, the kicker was that once a demo/game/movie was started the PS3 would fail on initializing the item in question.
I was informed by Cody that he would try to figure out what the problem was, and hopefully the unit would be back on its way by the following week. So I'm waiting the following week for either a phone call or a nice doorbell ring by the UPS carrier and the weekend rolls around. By Wednesday 6/24, I'm a little perturbed that I hadn't been contacted so I contact JDElectronics again and I'm directed once again to Cody. After a couple of minutes of trying to find my unit status, Cody finally locates the unit and tells me that they still hadn't figured out what the problem was. The YLOD situation was definitely fixed with the PS3 starting up and the XMB coming up. But no access to demos/games/movies from the XMB and he had eliminated the HDD (they backed it up to another HDD and reformatted my drive, then recopied everything back over) and the BD drive (as the PS3 wasn't starting up demos or video clips from the HDD itself). He told me he could go ahead and send the unit back to me with a full refund (even tho' they fixed the YLOD, it didn't count as a "full" fix) and I could try the $150 route with Sony directly or I could let him hold onto it for another week and he'd try to figure out the problem. Suffice it to say, I figured I'd already been without the PS3 for over a month now so I told him to see what he could find and hold onto the PS3 for another week. I'm doubting my PS3 will be fixed so I should be expecting my unit to be coming back this coming back. We'll see, I guess. ![]() |

If the heat spreader is loose and if the PS3 is in a working state, it'll tell you that the system need to be powered off due to overheating. If it's loose and you have solder balling problem, then you need to fix both. Quote:
I got a LOT of liquid flux and isopropyl alcohol for my money. The most expensive thing to have to constantly apply is the thermal paste. Quote:
I'm pondering about not using the bottom casing or just go completely bare. The only thing that would not be working if I go bare is the card reader. fuad |

hey,
I dont understand why my long post was deleted? but i will just sum up what i said about the YLOD. YLOD is caused by the hot/cold interaction that leads to disconnecting joints. (This is for the older generation PS3's.) I have gotten rid of the YLOD using the method. Instead of reflowing, i would try this way first since its easier. The bolts holding down the heatsink apply most of the pressure on the two corners while leaving the other two corners some what "loose". No matter how much you bend the brackets or how much washers you use, the opposite corners of the heatsink will still be not as "tight" as the corners that are bolted. This can be seen by the uneven thermal paste pattern. What I have done is insert a shim/bracket between the fan and the heatsink applying more pressure on the corners of the RSX. This helps connect the broken joints. I've got rid of many YLODS doing this! The only problem is the fan speeds up to the highest level because the shim is dissipating the heat somewhat I'm assuming. Maybe we can come up with a better Shim material (aluminum, copper, etc) and a better place to place it... I have pictures if you guys need. |

I need help with an external HD here.
I got a LACIE 250 Gb external HD, but how do I make the PS3 to recognize it? I already did the ?search for media?, and powered up and down both units steps. So what else could I do? |

FAT32? Isn't that an older format? Mine is in NTFS. Shouldn't the PS3 be able to read NTFS instead?

Wait, I take it that its not a new HD and you've amassed a lot of data already on it? And yes, if you format the hard drive, you lose all data on it. |

That's right, I have quite a lot of old files and stuff there... good news is, I do not have to use THAT HD at all. I was just trying it out with the PS3, and see if I could just look at some old pics directly that way. It's cool, thanks for your answer.

Latest fix attempted today. I took it all apart and applied what little thermal paste I had left to the chips without removing what I had just applied a couple days ago. When the PS3 shut off after the last reflow I didnt touch it again until today. Didnt do the reflow but this time I bent the two metal pieces that push down on the heat plates on the chips so that they are more of a curve. I'm guessing these are what ppl are referring to when they're bending something. Put it all back together making sure the fan was plugged in this time on the bottom of the board... perhaps the culprit this last time for such a quick overheating, and played Uncharted for an hour with no problems... I've placed a small fan in front of the system now hoping it helps move some air through and the PS3 is vertical. I've gotten this disassemble/ reassemble thing down to a science now.
