49.99 plus tax. Not too bad. They also had Bigger than Life, but I didn't pick it up.
my BB had them out too, but already pre-ordered the set and Days from Criterion with that 25% AFS code and got 3 for a great price. I can wait, besides, still have to catch up on some titles that still need viewing.

I know what you mean with the pricing, Usually it was always BEst Buy was about 5.00 less sticker price than retail. So for a 39.99 / 34.99 was the usual price point but when they got titles like Wings of Desire, Monsoon Wedding somehow Best Buy had a pricing issue, in fact Barnes and Noble had Wings of Desire at 49.99 when it was released and they got that issue fixed, and new stock reflects the correct 39.99 retail price. I think it came down to someone was entering numbers wrong.

I am suprised the YOJ/SAN set is being priced at Best Buy.com at 49.99 esp since you can price match it at that price.

Just a heads up. Amazon prices are trickling downward for Criterion Blu's. Most are still in the $25-28 range but The Seventh Seal is down to $18.99

Do people recommend The Seventh Seal? I may get it since the price dropped on Amazon. I have Bigger Than Life & Yojimbo/Sanjuro box preordered from Criterion. Can I possibly watch that many Criterions in the near future...lol? Yeah.

if you luv intellectual films, 7th seal is awesome and breath-taking. can't say it's emotional at all (some people look for sentimental stuff in films) but as a work of cinema... it's incredibly rich in symbolism and imagery. well worth it at $18 since that's roughly the B&N sale prices anyways =P the lowest u'll find Criterion BDs =)

BTW the AFS code brought Yojimbo/Sanjuro (2pak) and Days of Heaven down to $22 per movie shipped.

Unquestionably. Such a smart and poignant film, and it really hits home, because it revolves around religion and human morality.

After watching Downhill Racer, I can see Criterion's reasoning behind a DVD-only release. There is much damage to the source print (as was the case in Rosselini's war trilogy) and it's always been a soft film. I assume their choices to issue some films DVD-only have solid reasoning behind it, although I'd still prefer to have the blu.

I just bought and watched 8 1/2 this past weekend. I had seen it before, but never owned it. This transfer blew my mind! The contrast, detail and black blacks were incredible. This film is not for everyone, but even if you don't care for it you would be enthralled by the cinematography and the beauty of this transfer.

I enjoyed it so much that I had go back and watch it the next day with the commentary on.

Currently Best Buy has the Yojimbo/Sanjuro Set at 49.99 but it rings up 59.99 sticker price. I decided at risk of having them notice that it wasn't release date yet when price matching to just buy the titles first then just bring back receipt later for the difference. The other releases were 34.99
Wow, I hope they have this early at my Best Buy, I will gladly pay $60 for it.

I noticed that........ it's got me doing constant "price checks" at Amazon ever since

I wish I had some time to run to Best-Buy to check for the Kurosawa's though.

EDIT: I watched Lola Montes last night...... beautiful film..... And then, I watched an Uwe Boll film.... talk about 'contrast'

I wish I could be optimistic about the fact that one title dropped to $19, but I'd be happy for another $23-$24 price range for the rest.

Thanks to everybody for the suggestions on what to watch. I'm definitely thinking The Wages of Fear may be our starting point, as I've had quite a bit of interest in checking that out and only heard great things from you guys about it. It will either be our first weekly movie, or our second, but it is up there either way.

Just don't go and start with The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, as it is much more mainstream than most CC titles.
I actually did not like Benjamin Button that much when we saw it in theaters, so no desire to ever own it.

My girlfriend and I actually have watched The Seventh Seal (it is the one Criterion blu we have that we've watched so far) and we both really loved it. I think she may have even enjoyed it a bit more than I did because of her religious background as a child (and all the questions/conversations that has left her with as a young adult). We will probably watch it again at some point, but I'm definitely aiming to watch those films we haven't seen yet first.

Thinking about picking up Bigger Than Life next week. We've seen Yojimbo so we can wait to own that, and something about Bigger Than Life just intrigues me.

Looks that way. I've got $60 in Amazon giftcards and I think I'll expand my Criterion Collection, just waiting to see how it all turns out.
