Nothing in Common (1986)
![]() I liked Nothing in Common but didn't love it the first time (probably 15 years ago - I never saw it theatrically because I went to The Fly that night instead, which is a decision I don't regret). I liked it a bit more this time but still didn't love it. I'm not sure what is holding me back from truly falling for the movie. Maybe because it feels uneven at times and never quite finds the right balance between comedy and drama? I don't know. But I did find it more effective the second time around - possibly because I'm older now and coming to it from a different perspective. Tom Hanks isn't quite Tom Hanks yet, but this may be the beginning of that (or one of the beginnings). Jackie Gleason delivers a damn fine performance, in what would be his last. Speaking of which, here's a fun anecdote from IMDb: "[Director Garry] Marshall finally called [Jackie] Gleason on the phone and insisted that if he didn't do this film that the last film he would be remembered for was Smokey and the Bandit Part 3 (1983). Gleason immediately accepted the offer." (Haha. I've only ever seen the first Smokey and the Bandit, which was a blast. Were the sequels - particularly 3 - really that bad?) Now I'm wondering if Hanks agreed to work with little sister Penny Marshall on Big two years later because of his experiences with Garry Marshall on this film. Back to Nothing in Common: The rest of the cast was excellent too. Eva Marie Saint was still a great beauty, and a great actor. You can see why she had once been a Hitchcock leading lady. Barry Corbin and Sela Ward were good fun, and Hector Elizondo and Bess Armstrong played nicely in supporting roles. Still, as much as I like and respect the movie, I never truly fell in love with it. |
