See this is what I mean, Collectors don't mind paying a little more for Disc. The Studios and Distributors are watching all this, and taking notes.

I have been trying to see what you mean, but I don't think I have the right glasses for it.

You keep saying contradictory things like: "discs will keep getting more expensive" and "prices have not gone up much' and then "Disc prices are not going up" followed in the same sentence with "if people want Physical they will have to pay more."

You enjoy absolutist hyperbole like "Disc is dead" and "Physical going Down in Flames."

You advise people to make their moving decisions based on where they can get the best internet service as the top priority.

You state the obvious like "The Studios and Distributors are watching all this, and taking notes." Is there a single business that does not track how their product sells?

"Collectors don't mind paying a little more for Disc." Disc collectors likely do not even consider any other method and just how much is a "little more?" Physical collectors quite often get the digital code along with the disc like one of those trinket prizes you find in a box of cereal.

For these reasons and more, I can not be certain if even you know what you mean.

It's not a competition. Both physical and digital purchases are legal and help support the film industry. Don't forget there are also loads of people out there who pirate and get their digital copies illegally either because they don't want to pay anything or because they want digital but don't want to be locked in by DRM. Then there's people who buy physical media because they don't have the speeds in certain rural areas to even consider going digital (who know in the future as they get faster Internet if they may convert?). Not to mention the older generation dying off and less revenue coming from physical. Just because its not doing good now doesn't mean it can't change. No one is saying blu-rays are crap because they didn't surpass DVD sales when that was introduced.

But if the numbers provide you with some sort of relief that you've made the "right" choice then good for you. Frankly, I doubt anyone here cares whether you have hundreds of cases on a shelf or hundreds of titles in the cloud. We all like films but doesn't mean you should go around belittling others for their choice just because you think it's not worth it.

also can the term 'serious collector' stop being used. as long as one has access to films they treasure and also have that same access to new cinematic experiences...why does it make someone less of a 'serious' collector if it is physical or digital?

In a word, no. I can use what ever terminology I choose too. So can anyone else. I don’t consider digital lovers serious film fans. That is just my opinion.

Well I'm sure someone more stubborn that you would look down at you as not not being a serious film fan because you haven't seen a certain film or haven't explored a certain genre of film, wouldn't make the right. You said you treat others as they treat you but it's very obvious you're a bigot.

I consider myself to be an enthusiast as I try not to take myself too seriously. I own Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead; just how serious can I be with titles like this in my collection?

This thread should be stopped. There is always a debate between digital hd and physical media with no winner at all. We all want to be happy, but some of us here are insulting others in a civilized, professional way on which format the person is all in for and which format is greater. Both formats have pros and cons. If your happy with one of the formats, its all good. Lets just enjoy watching films and tv shows in our preferred method.

Okay Steedeel, this is where I draw the line, what is a Serious Collector? One that seriously collects, so this should include Digital HD people too. I have over 500 Digital Movies, and some Digital Collectors have them in the Thousands. I think we fall under the Serious Umbrella. This is what Digital HD people don't like, some Physical Lovers act like Snobs because of the perceived superiority of their Discs. We have said with the new Codec and Bandwidth Digital HD is matching Disc to our eyes and ears. So we too are Serious Collectors!

Look guys, this all ties in with where I think Digital is leading us. As Digital (mostly through subscriptions) grows, so does the threat of big screen home viewing fading away. We will go from ‘enjoying’ on the phone or tablet when convenient to ONLY enjoying on phone or tablet. This threat exists in my lifetime and I find it utterly repulsive. The thought of not being able to enjoy my films on the big sceeen would be the end of my hobby. Sure many will watch on phones in the future anyway but I don’t expect that behaviour of film fans. Yet, we see year after year tv sales declining and phones becoming more and more popular. It could be argued that TV sets are a slowly dying segment and that is potentially so very sad. We have 4K and the mainstream could be watching on phones and tablets. I just see you guys as accelerating this process and that’s the truth. I see it as fence sitting or happy clapping as this future plays out. Maybe I have you guys wrong and you do genuinely prefer watching films on your mobile devices? Therefore it wouldn’t be even worth discussing quality. I just presume you guys on a Blu-ray film forum would want to be able to enjoy your content on the biggest screeen in the house, no?
We have seen what is happening with 3D tv and with accelerated moves to make everything mobile, the traditional TV set could go the same way.

See my post above. We live in a world where the mass market decides so it’s not a ‘everyone is happy’ scenario. Try telling 3D fans we can just relax and enjoy their favourite method?

One of the perks of digital is that you can watch on any device including mobiles and tablets. But I think the vast majority here watch their digital movies on a TV. Your fears are unfounded. No one is going to get rid of TVs.

Sorry, but I can not imagine that viewing content on a big screen, TV or projector, will ever go away. I can imagine a lot, but my most paranoid high in college could not have cooked that one up.

I have a 4K & 3D TV and if I did not I would have a 3D projector. It is still a standard feature on them, so I am even relaxed about my ability to watch 3D.

How we access content, disc, digital purchase, or streaming is not going to diminish our wanting to view that content on a large screen whenever possible.

"Jon Abt, co-president of Abt Electronics retail store near Chicago, said the 55-inch "sweet spot" TV size for the family room seems to have jumped to 65-inch and larger.

NPD said that 23 percent of all TVs sold were 55 inches or bigger, up from 20 percent a year earlier."

Article dated Jan. 5, 2017
https://phys.org/news/2017-01-big-tv-year.html

Globally: "the average size of TV panels reached 44.7 inches in the first half of 2017, up by 1.7 inches from a year ago."

I was in college in the 80s and the idea that people would one day casually put 50"+ tvs in their bedrooms would have seemed like science fiction back then.

And yet, here we are.

I remember when I got my 150 pound Toshiba 36" CRT TV thinking that it was the largest TV ( non-projection) I would ever have.

Our screens keep on getting bigger.

The only merit his paranoia has is that I do see the kids born in the 90s onwards like to watch movies on their laptops. I've seen some watching netflix TV shows on their phones. But a year or 2 ago Steedeel said we were all gonna watch movies on smart watches in the future.
