![]() Also the movie was made with a 2K digital intermediate. So the Ultra HD version will have improvements over the standard Blu-ray from high dynamic range, color depth, and the small bump from 1080p to 2k but it won't be a true Ultra HD presentation anyway |

I posted in the thread so much, I feel obligated to share my thoughts on the film. My review, for those interested:
I saw the movie opening night, with a free ticket, because I'm a Fantastic Four fan. As mentioned, I spent a long time talking about the movie, I had to see it. Before the movie came out, going off the trailers, I said I felt the movie was probably going to end up generic, bland, forgettable. I figured it might be bad, but in the sense that Green Lantern or Daredevil 2003 or Ghost Rider were bad: bad, not great, not good, but not unwatchable. Not at the complete lower rung of the comic book movie genre, but definitely not near the top. I expected a Rotten Tomatoes score somewhere around 40-50%. Maybe 30% at the lowest. I didn't expect a comic book movie, at this point in the game, to not even be able to crawl past 10% on Rotten Tomatoes. Everything that could be said has been said at this point. I was suspended for a month, so I couldn't review the movie here immediately. Even if I could have, this movie is genuinely not worth the time or effort to bother with a lengthy review. I watched it, I hated it, I'll never own it, and I'll never watch it again. I'll offer my "cliff notes" review and be done with it: The biggest, most unforgivable sin this movie commits is that it's not about the Fantastic Four. I don't mean in the sense that "the Fantastic Four aren't supposed to be that young." I mean in the sense that the Fantastic Four aren't in this movie, and the movie isn't about the Fantastic Four: it's about the teleporter machine. The Fantastic Four, above everything else, is about a team who happen to be a family. Team, family. That's what Fantastic Four is about. Fant4stic is about a teleporter. I've never seen a superhero movie where the object of origin was focused on more than the hero. It's like doing a Spider-Man movie that focuses on the genetically enhanced spider, pushing Peter Parker to the background while the spider, the spider, the spider is more important. That's how it was with Fant4stic: teleporter this, teleporter that. Teleporter, teleporter, teleporter (Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!). The four barely interact in this movie. It's a team movie, and it's supposed to be about this group of people who are a family. Okay, so they went younger... they could have been like a family, but the filmmakers didn't even do that. The Incredibles did it perfectly, because they're a family and they're a team. Guardians of the Galaxy took a group of mismatched outcasts and made them a team, and made them a family. The Avengers did it. The Untouchables did it. In a team movie, the team has to take importance. In Fantastic Four... the four who should be a team barely interact. Science fair scene. It's Reed, Sue, Ben - and Ben and Sue don't even talk. Then it's Reed, Sue, Victor. Then it's Reed, Sue, Johnny. Then it's Reed, Ben, Johnny, Victor. (Again, Ben and Johnny never talk). The four don't appear in a scene together until the last five minutes. I absolutely could not believe it - that this film was so incompetent that it couldn't even have the Fantastic Four be together. It doesn't get the excuse of, "it's an origin." Guardians told the origin of the team, and actually had them be a team. Same for Avengers, and Incredibles, and Untouchables, and... really, any team movie. The movie foregoes developing the four -- both individually and as a team -- in favor of dealing with some teleporter, a teleporter which never gets specified why it's so important. Okay, so it can teleport matter. Space dust, at first. A toy car, a toy plane. So what? It's some barren "planet" in an alternate dimension. Why is the teleporter so important? We never find out why Reed built the stupid thing, what it could be purposed for... the government only really wants it after they realize, "Zoinks, we can, like, totally use this to give people superpowers, guys! Even though it was a freak accident." The four were all unlikable, especially Reed. Not just because he abandons his "friends," but Teller's real-life personality must have come through, because he was unbearable. He didn't even seem especially smart, and the movie went out of its way to show that Victor was smarter (erasing part of Reed's work on the board and re-writing it). There was no Reed/Victor rivalry or hatred here. No relationship at all. Heck, they were friends! Victor goes, "He's getting close to Sue. I don't like him. Eh, we're drunk and now we're bros." When he comes back as Doom... no feelings towards Reed specifically whatsoever. He just wants to take everyone out. Why? Because. Because he's evil. Just because. They retread ground with Doom. He's got an unrequited love thing for Sue, again... he has unspecified, undefined Electro powers, again... he looks awful, again... it's Doom 2005 copy and pasted into an even worse movie. The movie is so incompetently made, so pathetically put together that I couldn't believe it was a major, Hollywood, blockbuster release. The acting, bad. Writing, directing, bad. The "action" (as little as there was) was atrocious. I watched four whiny, unlikable brats build a dumb machine for an hour and a half, only for the "payoff" to resemble something you'd see in a Youtube video shot in a backyard. To come full circle, the biggest problem was the four themselves, and their lack of interaction. No character development. No character, really. Just... four young kids. I've loved these characters all my life, but in this movie, I didn't care about a single one of them. And I was never given a reason to. Everyone comes across as jerks. In the last scene of the movie, when the four are in their new base, Johnny takes a dig at Ben that was just cruel. It came off as cruel, because the two didn't have the relationship they had in the comics or even the Story movies. They didn't talk. They weren't friends. So Johnny saying "the thing that no one wanted," to a guy who has had his life ruined by being turned into a giant rock monster, just makes Johnny completely unlikable. It's not friendly teasing, because they had zero relationship. It's like going up to a disabled person and making fun of them. That's how you end your movie?! It was just a really mean, awful way to end an already bad movie. I could speak further, but I don't have the desire to. It's not fun to rip on this movie. I love the Fantastic Four. This movie was put together to keep the rights, and it shows. You had actual insiders come out and say as much, vindicating all the "haters." The behind the scenes of this movie proved all the detractors right. I'm not going to say "I told you so," or gleefully rejoice in that I was right about this movie, because I didn't want to be. I love the Fantastic Four. And I absolutely hated this movie. That's not a good feeling for me. It was a commercial and critical bomb, but I don't feel like I "won." Those are my honest feelings on the movie. As such, I can move on from this thread. |

It's been awhile since I posted, but I was just thinking what the best thing Fox could do with this movie for the salvation of the Fantastic Four franchise and to spare themselves anymore embarrassment...
They should shelve it like George Lucas shelved the Star Wars Christmas Special. Don't release it on dvd or blu-ray. Don't make it available for viewing through internet streaming or pay television or free broadcast television. Just let it become this elusive phenomenon that people will have forgotten about and the next generation will hear tell tales of, which would then allow for it to develop into some sort of cult-like film that people will be so curious about that they'd feel that they need to see it. That's when there will be a demand for it. Then in about 20 years Fox can release it as a collectible curiosity of sorts for many to see for the first time and for those who have seen it to revisit. That's when Fox might be able to finally make something back on the film. But in the meantime, whether Fox presses on with the franchise and reboots it again or Marvel gets the rights back and does it right, either way, this particular movie should just be banned from release for a long time. |

Yeah, I know... I'm just saying that I think it would better serve the turd to just have it disappear into obscurity and become somewhat notorious as a movie so bad that everyone wants to see it after a couple of decades after its initial release.

BEWARE THE RANT and not the kind you might think, so I'll preface this by saying, I'm not trolling. I'm genuinely being serious, totally 100% cotton! <Just a little Scream 3 joke for ya
![]() Ready...? Here. We. Go. THE OVER-REACTIONARY HATRED OF THIS FILM IS A JOKE!! There I said it. Let me clear things up right away. I am by no means saying it didn't have plenty of problems but 9% on Rotten Tomatoes and 4/10 on iMDB? Piss right off! This movie got slaughtered by critics, and audiences... like ripped in half with a chainsaw. THAT'S JUST BULL!!! Sorry but it is. That type of lambasting is solely reserved for Uwe Boll IMO ![]() I don't think it's THAT bad. In fact I don't even think it's bad, period! Well, okay, some of it definitely is, but I'll talk about that later. I think critics and audiences have been extremely unfair to the movie. I know the movie doesn't have feelings etc but it is totally, 1000000% the studio that should get the flack here! I think the movie is getting such an excessive amount of vitriol for a few big reasons that aren't the movie's fault: 1. People are carrying over a negative attitude from the other two films, which are much worse in almost every department... plot, direction, script, casting, tone, music (well, actually the music sucks in this one). You get the point. 2. Most importantly! I genuinely believe people got swept up in how much drama surrounded this movie, from the very moment the reboot was mentioned, not even announced... mentioned, (all because of the aforementioned steamy piles made a decade ago). People were on the 'hate' bandwagon from day one. Even myself to an extent. I was one of those that had a problem or two, *cough*a black Johnny Storm*cough* but even I can put all my predispositions behind me and look at the film objectively. I don't think many other people did, even critics, pretty much everyone had a preconceived notion they stuck to. They were going ready to hate, almost looking for an excuse to hate... I get it I do. I did the same thing with the Scream TV show. Things is, the first people to see it went in with that attitude and came out cursing the movie to such an extent more people went in with an even worse attitude and so on... and the rest is history. Now that's out of the way. I'll talk about the movie itself. Oh yeah, also, don't for one second think I don't know that my expectations were lowered so much that I'm pleasantly surprised or was predisposed to liking it. I knew that going in, and I went with neutral expectations, albeit a little tempered by the negativity and caning the movie received, but generally, neutral. Right! First thing's first. Anyone complaining that the movie didn't have the 'fun' factor needs to STFU! Why? Because it was clear from day one that was the case! The argument is a little redundant now. It's like being told you're getting pasta for dinner, coming to terms with that fact then still being shocked when there's no juicy steak on your plate. You know? BTW I'd rather the movie had more 'fun' in an ideal world but come on, we all knew it didn't going in so... Okay. Despite some 'iffy' editing/minor disjointedness the first 50/55 minutes or hour we're not just good, they were great IMO. I got a real Fantastic Voyage, Journey to the Centre of the Earth, 20'000 Leagues Under the Sea vibe. It clicked with me A LOT. I love that sort of thing. The writing and directing was solid, actually everything up until we see Reed escape the military bas was fantastic, pardon the pun! I felt the appropriate sense of wonder for something as grand and adventurous as inter-dimensional travel. I felt their pain, and the horror of their situation when they come back and have their powers, it was rather creepy in all honesty. There was a The Fly type "what the hell is happening to me" Body Horror going on. I was thoroughly enjoying the film! I was sitting there like this is great, I want some of what everyone else is smoking ![]() Then, it went off the tracks... You could tell things went haywire behind the scenes, it was so obvious. The few bits of 'iffy' editing became more frequent, like almost every scene. The more the movie went on, the worse it became. It certainly was not Josh Trank directing in the last act, to me at least. A lot of the dynamic's set up were forgotten about, Ben hating Reed felt incredibly forced, the good writing in the first hour suddenly became incredibly suspect, and the Doom stuff was just plain corn on the cob (though I loved him walking through the base just killing everyone in sight) but it wasn't set up well enough, and finally the big set piece (if you could call it that) was bland in the extreme. It just became a different movie and it brings down my score, which was going to be pretty high. Ultimately the movie is a miss. But nowhere close to being the shitshow it's being made out to be. The last act is a calamity no doubt but I think the movie itself, as if it has feelings LOL, does need to be cut some slack. There is pretty good movie in there, it's just the studio ****ed it up royally! I'd love to read the script Trank was set to do initially, before the three big set pieces were cut etc, because I think THAT movie would have been something special. Sorry for the length of this post ![]() I give it a 3/5! rounded up from 2.7 just because I was loving all the stuff before it went off the tracks. It could have really good, but it ends up being decent because of the interference. I implore everyone who hated it so much to try it again without wearing their hate-tinted spectacles. Come on, Uwe Boll's House of the Dead has 4% on RT, this movie has 9%. That's harsh. I think Terminator Genisys is far worse but it's still not Uwe Boll bad ![]() Last edited by StevenHarvey1990; 09-10-2015 at 02:38 AM. |

Or maybe people saying it sucks really did think it sucked. You can just tell this movie was made with the sole purpose of keeping the rights rather than actually trying to make a good movie. If you like it, fine. But it deserves the bad reviews.

Nailed it!
As I wrote in my mini-review, I basically agree with you on all counts. I really liked the first hour until Reed's escape, and everything spiraled out of control during that whole "one year later"-part. The only good thing there was the "Doom walking through the corridor"-bit. Like you I'd love to see the original treatment because it really did show so much promise, but ultimately stumbled and fell during the last act. And it was definitely better than the previous two films, that's for damn sure! |

DisneyBlu kind of hit it on the head. This movie should never have been called The Fantastic Four. It felt more like four frat brothers and a girl and a night on the town. I was disappointed that they even called this movie The Fantastic Four. What was even more ridiculous is that this movie has 'Fantastic' in the movie name. I found the previous two Fantastic Four movies more enjoyable than this one. Just proves that Josh Trank should have stuck to making low budget, independent movies. That's what he's better at anyway.
After all, you don't see Michael Moore producing or directing big budget Hollywood films. He's better at documentaries. Josh should walk away from this. Lesson learned. |
