Got my shipping notification for the Ultimate, too. Shipped via Fedex Ground and should be here... tomorrow?!
Shipped from a city an hour away. Didn't realize there was a Gkids facility that close. My Shout Factory orders come from few sates away. |

The OG series is 26 episodes long and wraps up in a movie called End of Evangelion. The first half is pretty standard action series stuff and you might wonder what the big deal is. The second half deconstructs what came before (and the entire Hero's Journey genre) and is the reason the series is so popular. All throughout, there's excellent character development, brilliant cinematography, incredible music, and a great storyline. The story, so to speak, is actually the least interesting part, believe it or not. It's solid but mostly it serves as a backdrop to the character development and the ridiculously incredible directing. The story clearly wasn't a focus, especially by the end, but the experience of it is still wholly unique and makes the show legendary in the anime community. It's available on Netflix and was just released on blu ray. The Netflix version has a new dub that is well-acted but stilted in some parts due to an overly accurate localization process. For example, the main characters used to be referred to as the 1st Child, 2nd Child, 3rd Child, etc. Now they are referred to as 1st Children, 2nd Children, 3rd Children. A lot of people prefer the original dub from the 90s (known as the ADV dub) which flows a lot better though it is sometimes too "cartoon-y" by modern standards (especially in earlier episodes, when the localization team had no idea what the show was going to become. They thought they were making a standard action mecha anime but it becomes more of a psychological drama/horror). Personally, I prefer the ADV dub because of the better localization, the consistency with the Rebuild series (which has mostly the same cast as the ADV dub), and for nostalgia's sake but having watched both multiple times, you can't really go wrong with either. Of course, the only way to watch the ADV dub legally is to buy the special edition blu ray, which goes for about $150. It's also fairly easy to find the new blu ray video encode with the ADV dub on the high seas, but I would NEVER EVER recommend you do such a thing ![]() The remake series (colloquially known as the Rebuild series) is a remake of the original series that has a vastly different ending. It's also much, MUCH more accessible and rivals the very best Hollywood blockbusters in terms action set-pieces and production values. Consider it a streamlined version of the original series. Fans will argue its missing a lot of the nuance and subtlety (as well as a ton of other things) of the original series, and they're right, but they're still masterpieces in their own regard. While I recommend starting with the original series first, you can't go wrong watching the Rebuild series first instead. I have a few friends who did just that because the first episodes of the original series were too slow for them. They became mega fans after watching the Rebuild movies and they went back and finished the original series and are now die-hard fans of the whole thing. The Rebuild series is available on Amazon Prime. tl;dr Yes. Last edited by mastafishere; 01-27-2022 at 03:43 PM. |

Start with the original TV series then watch End Of Evangelion. If you really want more Eva you could also watch Death and Rebirth but it's really just a compilation movie for the series with just a couple of minutes of new footage, I personally don't feel like it is worth your time but you decide. And then you have the Rebuild films (1.11, 2.22, 3.33 and 3.0 +1.0) I haven't seen these so I have no opinion on them.

I'd say that's probably the best descriptor. Remake just gets the idea across faster, I guess. The fact that the ending is very different makes "alternate retelling" feel the most accurate though.

I am at the point where I am craving something original and creative. To me things like the OT Star Wars and specifically Twin Peaks are the highwater mark for me but I have been craving more. I am not on volume 4 of the Avenegers Complete Collection by Jonathan Hickman and my mind is constantly being blown. I have another Volume then Secret Wars to read but I cannot recommend his books enough. I say this as a 45 year old who has not really read comics since I was a teen, and I like some of the MCU (IW and Endgame being my favorite). Anyway back to Evangelion, Do both sets have the redos or whatever as well or only the expensive set (or is that an amazon exclusive)? |

If you're in it for the mind-blown factor then Evangelion is for you. The back half of the series is full of them and the End of Evangelion movie will fry your mind. Fans discuss it to this very day because of its layers of meaning and the artistry behind it. You're in for a treat. To answer your question, no set includes the Redo's (Funny that you use that word, as the third movie in the series is literally called "You Can Not Redo"). The original series (known as Neon Genesis Evangelion) is available in a standard set (Netflix and Japanese Dub, about $30-$35), Limited Edition (Netflix, ADV and Japanese Dub, $150) and Ultimate Edition (Netflix, ADV, and Japanese dub, $300). This includes all 26 episodes and the End of Evangelion movie (also a movie called Death (True)2 but that is just a recap of the series. It's there for completitionist sake and its not really worth watching). The Limited Edition and the Ultimate Edition are GKIDS exclusives and you can only order them through their website. If you buy any of those sets, you're good on the original series. If you watch on Netflix, Neon Genesis Evangelion and End of Evangelion are different "titles" so you just have to remember to watch End of Evangelion when you finish the series. The four Redo's (that's what I'm calling them now) were released on Blu-ray individually and only the first three were released that way. All four of them are an Amazon Prime exclusive (for now, we hope?). So if you have Amazon Prime, you can watch all four on there. Buying the blu-rays can get expensive, as the first two have been out of print for years and can go for well over $100 on eBay. With the fourth one out, there's hopes that all 4 will be re-released and bundled together (hopefully in 4k) but nothing official has been announced. The fourth one came out in March of last year and STILL hasn't gotten a Blu-ray/4k release so my guess is Amazon has a time exclusive deal for the home video release. GKIDS has the physical media rights to Neon Genesis Evangelion. Netflix has the streaming rights to Neon Genesis Evangelion. Amazon has the streaming rights to Redo of Evangelion. ???? has the physical media rights to Redo of Evangelion. Funimation USED to have the rights to the Redo movies (hence why the first three movies are available, but that expired before the fourth one was released). tl;dr No set that includes everything exists and likely never will. Of course, all four of them are easily available on the high seas but I would NEVER EVER recommend that you go that route ![]() Last edited by mastafishere; 01-27-2022 at 04:18 PM. |

Adding to that, I personally wouldn't recommend shelling out for the CE if you have no attachment to the old dub. I'm not a big fan of it personally, and it's pretty outdated acting wise, as it changes the tone of the show quiet a bit. I'd recommend the Netflix subs over anything, the changes it made from ADVs localization aren't really that big of a deal.
