Amazon has 'Used - Very Good' product through Amazon warehouse deals for $47.70.
I have one on order that should ship 9 April.
> Now that I read the condition description again, I'll think about whether to proceed or cancel.
> At a half price sale this should be $50 for a new copy.

It's a funny thing about a Criterion thread as opposed to threads for other releases. If this had been for anything other than a Criterion box, we'd have had endless moaning after the release date about what they got wrong. But when something like this is released, the relative silence really speaks volumes. It's what we wanted, and the presentations are awesome. Fans happy. No further discussion needed. lol

It's 2017 though. Many people complain just to complain, because it makes them feel powerful on the Internet. It's a negative-first society now. Half the discs people complain about have absolutely nothing wrong with them, but the hater culture nitpicks to find something.

There was plenty that people complained about for this release: the cover art (which was hated on for weeks when the images were released), the fact that one digipack is larger than the others, the black blobs on one scene in the background in Before Sunset that were also apparent on the DVD but look like some sort of computer glitch, lack of commentaries on the first 2 films, etc etc.

To be fair, I dont feel like the 1st movie PQ is particularly good. It even felt like a pre-existing master.

This being written, I strongly disagree about the generalisation over people "complaining just for complaining".

Many times, the complaints are legitimate. Then, it's just a question of intensity and priority.

I've seen people ranting over and over about some packaging being this or that, or about how it was supposed to come with a slipcover but didnt.
I couldnt care less about these things, but are their complaints illegitimate ? Well, if the packaging is flimsy or if a slip was announced but not delivered, these are potential concerns, yes.

Same go for compression issues, re using old masters, incorrect framing, debatable color timing, useless digital filtering, etc etc.

If more people would be legitimately complaining about issues, actually, many of them might have disappeared since a long time.

But oh no, complaining is for the egomaniacs.

To clarify, I guess what I mean is, once we all had this in hand, it wasn't weeks of splitting hairs over every possible thing that's not perfect as it is with most releases.

I'd strongly disagree about any of the film's PQ not being good. Comparing any of them to the DVD versions ensures that I'll never watch them any other way.

Oh I'm not saying you cant forget the previous DVDs, the set clearly is much better.
I'm just saying that I dont think the first movie PQ is the best it can be.

Based on what though? It's a new scan and the compression is decent. Sure it's not a 4K scan but really Sunrise has always looked the shoddiest PQ wise.

Level of details, overall definition, grain pattern and color grading (notably people's faces, which reminded me pre existing MGM HD masters).
If I didnt have the technical details, I would have supposed it's a pre existing master.

Detail and definition could have been better with a 4K scan from the negative I guess (as opposed to a 2k scan of the IP) but this has always been not a great looking film (in the technical sense).

Seems like a good price. Question is whether I wait to bite the bullet. This would be a blind buy but I'm fairly confident I'll enjoy them. Should I wait a bit longer though? Do we think it'll go down even more?

It's a very good price. Unless you have a bunch of coupons that may work for the B&N sale in July, you aren't likely to beat that. It's a great trilogy. My favorite trilogy ever.

Go for it!

I have Before Midnight which I have not watched. So it's a blind buy for me also. I bit since it is less than half list price. I don't see many Criterions for less than half retail, i.e., 39.99 titles at Costco for 19.99 or the Criterion website sales for 50% off.

As always, bottom- fishing is a crap shoot.

I finally watched Before Sunrise last night. Was not impressed with the picture quality. The opening shots of the Austrian landscapes are flat and nothing pops while the couple walk around the city. I was especially unimpressed during the scene where the couple
[Show spoiler]is laying around in the park at night.
There was white grain swirling around the far left and white sides of that whole scene. The only other Blu-ray I have seen that has this kind of grain during night scenes is The Pit from Kino.

Did anyone else notice this issue? Or is there something wrong with my disc and/or setup?

I am playing the disc on an X Box One S connected to a 2016 55" LG 4K OLED.

EDIT - Here is a link to the DVDBeaver review where they have a screen shot of the scene where I saw the white grain / noise. Since the noise isn't present on the screen shot I assume there must be something wrong with my system. Can anybody guess a likely cause and/or offer a possible solution?

Is it worth $51.11 right now on amazon? Or should I wait for BN sale, not sure if the sale price would be much better

I THINK the B&N price will be better. But if you quote me, or rely on me, or anything like that, I will hunt you down.

The price will be $50 at Barnes during the sale.

Plus an extra 10% if you're a member.

Any lower than that depends on whether they accept any coupons this time around, which is doubtful based on what they did last year.
