Gulp. I would have seen it long ago, but then I just fell out of love with horror...Seriously, one summer I was seeing three horror daily while devouring countless books on the genre.

You mean she was impaled?

Eh, I'm sure it won't top Salo..

I'm pretty sure that's the well-known effect that the director had to prove was fake

Didn't they kill several live animals in that film, as well?

Well, I've seen all the classic horror films and am not opposed to them, I just see them much more infrequently. I've maybe only seen a dozen or so this year, including one from today...

Yeah, that's what makes it hard to watch today

I really don't like horror films.

I saw a lot of horror films growing up. I was actually scared of The Sixth Sense for several years when I was younger. As I got older, I expanded to more and more horror films, but all of them felt the same.

I wish they'd release something original that isn't torture and slasher, like it is now. The only horror film I remember finding relatively creepy over the past few years was Insidious.

Still haven't seen The Exorcist...

For me that title would go to the immensely unpopular House of the Devil. I absolutely love the placement of "One Thing leads to Another" by The Fixx

You should try Eyes without a Face or Spoorloos. Those are more thriller than horror.

As a whole, I really disliked House of the Devil.

I thought the ending was creepy was hell, but I've never been a big 80s-style horror fan, so seeing the direction that the film took was a turnoff.

Not to mention, the first hour was just buildup for the last 10 minutes of hell.

Oh, I don't like the ending but I really like the rest of it. Same goes for The Innkeepers: I thought both films were perfect up until the last 10 minutes.

I savor the laid back build up of the 1st hour of that film. It's a very assured film visually.

I see where you guys are coming from. From the beginning of House of the Devil, I figured out the general plot minus the bizarre ending. The buildup didn't really do anything for me because I knew that the family was just playing mind games with the girl. I was actually getting pissed that it was all spooks and this and that haha.

Well, yeah, it's easy to figure it out, but horror films have never been about plot for me. Atmosphere and attitude is key, and House of the Devil has them in spades.

See now here's a film I love. I also loved The Innkeepers just as much. Ti West is one of the bright lights of modern horror right now imho.

Some interesting responses to my original posting of Salo vs. In the Realm of the Senses. Speaking of more highly controversial films, could you imagine if Ken Russells' The Devils is ever released on Criterion? I know the British Film Institute recently released this on DVD (but not BD), but it seems like that film is so dangerously controversial, that extra inflaming element of religion is what holds any distributor back in releasing its uncut version (that may never see the light of day).

Are the most controversial films supposedly "essential" viewing? Sometimes I think certain movies should never be made, much less exposed to humanity. A Clockwork Orange still shocks people to the day, but I won't get into Kubrick now. Of all the best horror films, I still rank The Shining as the highest. It's not even a film, but some sort of metaphysical, supernatural creation. It is beyond a mere movie. And I just saw the documentary Room 237 at a local arthouse theater, and WOW, I had no idea about all the conspiracy theories behind this "film". It's no wonder Kubrick had an IQ of over 200, the man was simply a genius on par with Einstein. Ok, I really got off track here.

I'm with iScottie. There's no force on earth could compel me to watch Salo.

Never gonna watch Salo or Cannibal Holocaust. Life is too short and I'd rather play with my puppy instead. She's so cute.

I have In the Realm of the Senses queued up on Netflix but not quite sure if I want to check it out. The Criterion essays I read were very interesting but ultimately it depends on my mood in the next week or so.

So much is made of Cannibal Holocaust, but it really wasn't that tough to watch outside of the animal killings. Salo is a harder watch, but a greater film.

The stuff I can't bring myself to watch are the really hardcore horror/gore films like the August Underground films or the Guinea Pig series. Also, I really don't think I could make it through A Serbian Film. That's where is gets a little too disturbing for me.
