How long does the 40% off Blu-rays at Barnes & Noble go for? Can't find details on their site.

One of the things I find interesting about the difference between Criterion and Studio Canal releases of the same color films is that in general the SC release seems to have a colder color palette and the CC version leans towards a redder/warmer palette. I'm gauging this from screenshots on blu-ray.com and other sites, since I do not double-dip on titles. I've noticed this on Belle de Jour, Cercle Rouge and Army of Shadows - coincidentally all are French movies. Is this a consistent pattern or what? If consistent, does it reflect some kind of cultural preference between the Euro and American releases? For instances sometimes we see color preferences even between western and Asian releases of Asian films (Hong Kong ones?) where the Asian release leans towards a green/yellow palette.

Or am I just talking rot here?

Yes it's not up there with Secrets and Lies, All or Nothing, or Another Year. (I would love the first two of them to be released by CC, I've still not seen Naked or Topsy-Turvy).

I do think it's worth a watch, but for me it has the same problem High Hopes had (though, to a lesser extent) - certain characters and performances which seemed really over the top, and pull you out of the film. I think Pro-B mentions Spall's character, which is true, but for me it was even more the case with Jane Harrocks' character. Her angry, snarl-y performance just seemed really overdone, and I didn't buy it. But then, as with any Leigh film, there are always these fantastically done scenes of confrontations and emotional outbursts (in this, a scene between Harrocks and Steadman) which are really affecting nonetheless.

Im curious about that too sometimes. Sometimes I feel like lots of Criterion releases have a very unsaturated look about them, almost too sterile somehow. I dont know what it is, hard to explain. Maybe its just the films i've seen

I am holding off all Criterion purchases for the moment, waiting for the (hopefully) coming B&N sales. But this is a must-buy for me. It's not Leigh's best film, but it was the first of his I ever watched, about twenty years ago, and I still have a great fondness for all the characters. What's not to love about Aubrey and his pineapple?

Sweet Movie is so disgusting. I seriously question the tastes of anyone who likes that movie. Criterion really has some oddballs.

I paid $60 for Pierrot Le Fou a couple months back, and I'm extremely happy.

1) You should consider buying the StudioCanal version of The Third Man, I bought mine for $12.99

2) Jacques Tati's Playtime is easily the best film of the lot as well as the most visually inventive comedy ever made.

*I have heard rumors about CC renewing the rights for Playtime, but I could be wrong...

All of these are in my collection.

You'll quite enjoy Something Wild. It's Ray Liotta's first major movie role!
I would love a Heima blu. I know they released a download only HD version (with unreleased material no less) but that's not the same.

I'm happy but embarrassed to say this but I just purchased my first Criterion Embarrassed because I have been collecting blu's for a while and never picked one up lol

Won an auction for Repulsion off of eBay for 19, in Like New condition. Now I am looking for Rosemary's Baby and the Thin Red Line.

Be aware that Barnes and Noble has a 50% off sale each July. That's the best time to buy them

Repulsion is one of my favorite films that Criterion has released. It's a wonderful, but haunting, psychological thriller by the great Roman Polanski!

I completely agree with you. I first saw this film a couple of years back when I decided to switch up my movie watching from just "dumb explosion movies" to something more sophisticated-movies that would actually make me think. I cannot wait to re-watch this

Now nothing wrong with explosion movies, but I could only take so much lol

you should compare the criterion Kwaidan DVD release with the Masters of cinema DVD release. color at some criterion releases is totally messed up.
same with a lot of asian criterion releases compared to the masters of cinema releases like harakiri ..

I know what you're saying.

Before joining the forum, I wasn't really into anything with any substance behind it. I'd blind buy whatever and watch whatever - even the filthiest trash ever put out.

The Criterion Collection gives me a reason to really sit back and think about films and appreciate what has been done. Hell, some of my favorite films of all time have been released by Criterion.

As a result, I feel as I'm a lot more film educated and really know what styles I enjoy most.
