One of the things I find interesting about the difference between Criterion and Studio Canal releases of the same color films is that in general the SC release seems to have a colder color palette and the CC version leans towards a redder/warmer palette. I'm gauging this from screenshots on blu-ray.com and other sites, since I do not double-dip on titles. I've noticed this on Belle de Jour, Cercle Rouge and Army of Shadows - coincidentally all are French movies. Is this a consistent pattern or what? If consistent, does it reflect some kind of cultural preference between the Euro and American releases? For instances sometimes we see color preferences even between western and Asian releases of Asian films (Hong Kong ones?) where the Asian release leans towards a green/yellow palette.
Or am I just talking rot here? ![]() |

I do think it's worth a watch, but for me it has the same problem High Hopes had (though, to a lesser extent) - certain characters and performances which seemed really over the top, and pull you out of the film. I think Pro-B mentions Spall's character, which is true, but for me it was even more the case with Jane Harrocks' character. Her angry, snarl-y performance just seemed really overdone, and I didn't buy it. But then, as with any Leigh film, there are always these fantastically done scenes of confrontations and emotional outbursts (in this, a scene between Harrocks and Steadman) which are really affecting nonetheless. |

I am holding off all Criterion purchases for the moment, waiting for the (hopefully) coming B&N sales. But this is a must-buy for me. It's not Leigh's best film, but it was the first of his I ever watched, about twenty years ago, and I still have a great fondness for all the characters. What's not to love about Aubrey and his pineapple? ![]() |

2) Jacques Tati's Playtime is easily the best film of the lot as well as the most visually inventive comedy ever made. *I have heard rumors about CC renewing the rights for Playtime, but I could be wrong... |

you should compare the criterion Kwaidan DVD release with the Masters of cinema DVD release. color at some criterion releases is totally messed up. same with a lot of asian criterion releases compared to the masters of cinema releases like harakiri .. |

Before joining the forum, I wasn't really into anything with any substance behind it. I'd blind buy whatever and watch whatever - even the filthiest trash ever put out. The Criterion Collection gives me a reason to really sit back and think about films and appreciate what has been done. Hell, some of my favorite films of all time have been released by Criterion. ![]() As a result, I feel as I'm a lot more film educated and really know what styles I enjoy most. |
