The translation for the amazon dubs is awkward, clunky and sometimes wrong. Whereas the Funi dubs are more natural sounding and don't have misused words. The delivery/acting is bad in the first movie, but does get better in the later ones. But like I said everyone has different tolerances when it comes to translations and I am pretty picky.
I can't argue with the gripes you listed at all. I have a few of my own personally. I think you're assessments are mostly accurate (though I wouldn't go so far as to say the first one was bad but that's me). Seriously, no sarcasm, these are great write-ups. Maybe I'm looking at it too much like a fan wondering if I could recommend it to other people and the fact that all four movies are on Amazon Prime is the most accessible the Rebuild movies have ever been. So I'm letting Amazon get away with a lot of stuff because I want to be able get more people to watch it, maybe? All I know is the first time I watched the Amazon dub I was much more critical of it and the last time I watched it I was mostly fine with it.

Still, you're right that everyone has different tolerances. Personally I'm not so picky when it comes that stuff in general. In no way is that a judgment on you! I fully accept that there's some bias on my part.

Now that I'm taking the time to think about it, I'm making excuses for the Amazon Dub to be good enough because I'm too attached to the OG cast. If only Amanda Winn-Lee had come back for the Funimation dubs, then I would unequivocally watch the Funi Blu-rays and then jump into the Amazon 3.0 + 1.0. Next time I watch the series, I'll flip a coin!

Watched the first episode of this, on what will be my fourth different version of Eva over the years (VHS/Platinum DVD/Japanese Blu/Ultimate) and I'm pretty impressed, looks great with a healthy bitrate. I'd give it the edge over the JPN release and it's definitely miles better then the Platinum DVDs, Fly me to the Moon aside. While it is weird not hearing that at the end of the ep it's just a quick chapter skip to the next EP anyway.

Barring some 4K release (not sure how much better it could really look to be honest, detail and color depth are already great) this is probably the end of the line for me OG Eva wise.

Bring on the 4k releases! I'll re-buy this series every time they want to re-release it!

In all seriousness, here's hoping the Redos get a 4k box set sometime in the future. 3.0 + 1.0 doesn't even have a 4k release date in Japan, likely because of the Amazon exclusivity deal. 3.333 got a 4k release so hopefully that indicates that Studio Khara is planning something.

Well yeah, I'd certainly buy a 4K release since Eva is my 2nd favorite series. But I do have to wonder how much better it could look.

If 3.333 had English subs I would already have it.

Same here. In the past, I've imported the Hong Kong releases on blu-ray since those came with English subtitles and came out long before the US releases did, so I'm hoping they do 4K Hong Kong release as well.

Finally able to pick mine up at Fed Ex. No smudges or scratches on any of the discs. Guess I got lucky! The seal was torn, but I'm not a sealed collector anyway.

Got mine yesterday finally! Absolutely flawless condition! Sent my form to Gkids for the replacement disc but haven't received a response from them yet, which I thought was strange because I got my ticket for the replacements for the other two sets immediately. No biggie, I can wait.

Hey, Collector FX - it might be a good idea to post the replacement disc link in your first post, I had to search a bit for it in the thread, so it might make it easier for others to find. Just a suggestion!

No problem, I hope I didn't come on too strong. I love the movies, the show and the manga and wanted the best dub presentation possible so I could introduce it to some of my friends and relatives who'd be open to it. I'm a little let down by the results, which probably shows , so I may end up showing the OG for NGE and Funi dub for the Rebuilds (thank god I have the BDs). Thanks for taking the time to look at my write ups and the amicable discussion, its appreciated.

I submitted mine the day it went up and still haven't recieved an email. It's probably just gonna show up out of the blue at this point. I assume it's a different program entirely because the UE was sold by GKids directly instead of being distributed through Shout. I noticed that the difference between the Standard and UE Discs is that the UE discs removed the Shout logo entirely.

Also noticed they removed the region coding symbol, but that probably doesn't mean anything, as the dts logo is gone too.

Edit: I read the website again, and I guess I missed the part that states they will be fulfilled in February, so I guess we'll get an answer soon!

There's also the UPC prefix that shows GKIDS distributed the Ultimate Edition themselves. So the UPC for the Ultimate Edition is on the packing box.

That prefix is 700721 while Shout! Factory's UPC prefix is 826663.

Is there still no word on a UK replacement disc program? What are they waiting for?

They did mention they were working on getting the replacement scheme setup right now. They were unaware of the replacements being distributed in the US, and had originally stated they had no plans to do a replacement program, but I think they got hit with a lot of requests for them, so maybe that changed their minds.

Got mine yesterday and had to submit a claim due to a dent at the top center of the box. I'll wait until I get some sort of response from that before sending out for the replacement.

Mine the outer box is torn in one corner. I already messaged them before the weekend, they messaged back that claims are being reviewed, but it’s sounding like they’ll probably replace just the outer box. Honestly less likely to get damaged without the extra weight of the inside contents, so that is my personal preference, figured you might like a heads up on how they likely are to handle situation though. Make sure to take pics of both the dent and box it shipped in.

Good to know, thanks. I'm fine with an outer box replacement only as everything else was fine. Even this dent is pretty minor, but for the cost it's something that would bother me.

I still haven't heard anything back yet

Does the GKIDS/Shout standard edition need a replacement disc or does the issue only affect the UE?

And what does it mean that the box sets feature a "classic subtitled" version in addition to the ADV dub? Is it an older translation? If so, what's the big difference and would I be fine just getting the standard edition for the new subs?

The issue affects all versions. As far as subs, they are the old ADV subs which some people prefer, someone posted a comparison pic a while back. Personally I watch with classic subs because the Netflix subs say things like "Third Children" instead of "Third Child" which just annoys me.

As it should. "Third Children" - regardless of what excuse Anno's translation department wants to use - is considered incorrect English grammar and makes zero sense in a literary context.
