The why is probably twofold. Fox very likely just wants this whole thing forgotten and it would probably be very expensive to finish the effects for an alternate cut.

And really, what's in it for them? People would either walk away thinking it still sucks and was horribly conceived and executed from the very beginning -or- that Fox got cold feet and ****ed up what could have been a really cool movie.

There's really no win for Fox in there anywhere.

It would be like falling down Fox's timestream.

AUDIENCE

What's that?

FOX

Never mind, let's go back.

AUDIENCE

But what is it?

FOX

It's one of our films. There's only our films here. That's the point. Now let's get back.

AUDIENCE

But I never saw that film. I saw the other Fantastic Four films. Two films, both of them you. You're Twentieth Century Fox.

FOX

I said it was one of our films, I never said it was Fantastic Four.

AUDIENCE

I don't understand.

FOX

The name, the film's name...that's not the point. The name the other Fantastic Four films chose was Fantastic Four. The name you choose, it's like a promise you make. That's the one that broke the promise.

FAN4STIC

What I did, I did without choice. In the name of dark and gritty.

FOX

But not in the name of Fantastic Four!

INTRODUCING JOSH TRANK AS FAN4STIC

If you get that reference, you are automatically awesome.

*I purposefully ignored the 1994 Fantastic Four as most people wouldn't have seen it.

When I think Fantastic Four, I definitely think darker is better. Do these people really not understand these characters?

Doom looks good! I liked the way he looked in the movie. True I couldn't give a crap about the comic.

Darker isn't necessarily bad, it's an interpretation of the Fantastic 4 comics, it doesn't have to just be the exact same thing the comics were. And given the reception to the Tim Story movies (which weren't all that bad TBH), I don't blame Fox for wanting to go in a different direction.

Too bad the movie stank.

I know that I'm in the minority, but I like this movie.

Of course, I'm a big fan of the two Fantastic Four movies from a decade ago as well.

Dark is bad when there's no narrative reason for it and Fantastic Four isn't really something you can make a dark/gritty film from. How are you supposed to take a film featuring a guy who can stretch his limbs seriously?

The other problem with a dark/gritty Fantastic Four is that it means it doesn't feel like a Fantastic Four movie. A big part of the Fantastic Four is that they operate as a dysfunctional family unit: take away things like Johnny Storm and Benny Grimm's brother-like rivalry or Sue finding herself having to act like their mother and it could be any film with the Fantastic Four name.

If I watch a Fantastic Four film, I want to see the domestic comedy that was present in the Fantastic Four comics alongside the superhero fights and science exploration (eg: the Negative Zone). I don't want to see them brooding about how terrible their life is or talking in overly serious tones about having to stop an overly serious portrayal of Doctor Doom.

And I certainly don't want to see what I hear this film does: spend majority of its running time in laboratories with only ten minutes devoted to an actual superhero fight.

I'm totally with you on the dysfunctional family aspect of it, which was TOTALLY missing from this movie despite Trank's whole "modern family of mixed races" thing that was a great idea, just poorly excecuted. But the familial aspects and the darker tone don't have to be mutually exclusive. I'm not saying F4 needs to be a Christopher Nolan movie, but there's a way to bring gravitas to what they're doing while also keeping things kinda fun. If the story and the actors are good, the tone shouldn't matter; light or dark, it will be good. Trank's F4 had neither of those things.

Honestly, I'll be surprised if any director managed to pull off a dark Fantastic Four. How do you ground a guy who can stretch his limbs into reality?

I've said it before and I'll say it again: a Fantastic Four movie needs to have a tone akin to 80s feel-good blockbusters like Ghostbusters and Back To The Future.

I think the MCU has found the right balance of keeping the stakes high while also keeping things relatively light (some would say overly jokey, which I kinda agree with for certain characters). I still don't understand how Fox has been able to do (mostly) right by X-Men but can't figure out F4. If they can handle the much bigger team of mutants with powers that are just as difficult to ground in reality, then F4 shouldn't be a huge problem. I think the origin of F4 is the biggest issue, the next movie should just start with them as a team right off the bat.

When's the Blu-ray gonna drop to a fiver so that I feel enticed to buy it? I've said it before but I do think there's a good film in there somewhere. I love the body-horror angle and there's an air of melancholy that hangs over everything. The second half is a monumental mess, though. I was sat in the cinema wondering how it got released in such a state.
