It's normal. For The Dark Knight, they had 2 versions. No extra content, but specific scenes were filmed in Imax, so it went from the usual aspect ratio to proper imax ratio in some of the scenes. When they released it to DVD and Blu-Ray, the Blu-Ray ratained the IMAX version of the film.

It is normal. The aspect ratio shifts for the IMAX scenes.

What other two said. It immerses you in the action or shot more. The Transformers Revenge of the Fallen "Big-Screen edition" (Walmart exclusive, can be had from eBay or a used retailer) does it, too.

Welcome to blu-ray!!!

If you get Tron: Legacy, it has shifting aspect ratios as well.

If you saw Dark Knight in an IMAX theater, it would be exactly the same. The shots that fill the screen were shot in IMAX, the shots with black bars were shot in 35mm. It's working perfectly, showing the movie as Nolan intended for it to be seen.

Does anyone think that WB will re-release TDK on blu-ray before TDKR is released in theaters?

I will double dip if they included the TDKR prologue, do a new V/A transfer for TDK (not that it needs to) and include extra contents above the current one.

I doubt they will before, they might after but it'll probably just be the same discs thrown in a box set. There might be a series documentary at some point, but I believe we have already seen everything Chris Nolan is willing to share as far as behind the scenes or alternate footage goes. If the script is any indication there werent any deleted scenes, just little things trimmed from existing scenes.

With Tron though, the video quality does not change much between the two. The contrast and detail is just as impressive in 2:35:1. With the TDK, its very different. The IMAX scenes are amazing, but the standard film stuff is just average at best. Noticeable difference between the two.

The image quality of DK in places is very poor. The IMAX stuff looks incredible, but the 35mm stuff looks poor.

Amazon has a preorder of a The Dark Knight blu-ray releasing on June 19. Does anyone have any info on what this is? I can't post a link. Just type this into Amazon: B007KW5NQC

Just a question: is there a reason for that? You'd think that such a recent, high-budget film would render better results, wouldn't you?

TDK, like all of Christopher Nolan's films, was not mastered digitally, other than the IMAX sequences. If this movie was mastered digitally, what you'd be seeing is a production-quality scan of the camera negative; here what you're seeing is a likely lesser-quality scan of a color-timed interpositive. The video technicans probably figured they'd compensate by sharpening the heck out of it.

Sometimes I hear people say it's the result of the IMAX DMR blow-up process, but that sounds like bunk to me, since DMR is proprietary to IMAX, and it's still quite grainy which is what DMR tries to get rid of.

There were a few articles back when it was released saying it used the IMAX master, which includes some sharpening so that the non-IMAX scenes still look good when blown up theatrically. Hence the sharpening you see on the disc.

I want to say the quote was from Nolan or someone else who worked on the film, but it's been four years since I read it.

Nice find. I hope it's an ultimate edition with a new transfer. We also need a new transfer for "Batman Begins" and it appears they are releasing it again on June 19. Search: B007KW5NP8 in Amazon. Could we get a new transfer for both?

My guess it that these releases will likely only include the Prologue for TDKR.

Probably just movie cash re-releases for TDKR. I'd love to be wrong though, I'd double dip both if they had new transfers.

Have to agree. I really don't like the transfer at all.
