Gangs of New York

More and more im beginning to love Martin Scorsese, he is truly gifted at directing. Now about the movie itself, im pretty sure i dont have to mention much being that this film is pretty popular but i will mention that Daniel Day- Lewis(The Butcher) is a gifted actor. His performance alone makes the movie worth viewing. Not to make matters worse he side by side with Leonardo DiCaprio . I film about the Gangs of New York during the civil war and their beliefs in reference with the war. I might add as well that the movie has allot of political influences as well. At the end of the day this is a very entertaining movie, i bit long but worth the viewing.

Heat

I've never seen this movie and finally watched it. What can I say? Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro two of the greatest actors ever make this an instant classic. I wasn't supspecting Pacino to be the good guy though but Pacino can do whatever which makes him such a great actor. Natalie Portam was in it also too, which I had no idea. But this was a great movie.

Great! It's emotionally tense and dark, just to prepare you.

[Show spoiler]So yeah, drug me, I'm OK with that....I trust you.

How did you like the closeup on the
[Show spoiler]Preying Mantis to inform us that the bad guy was very very bad. LMAO
I agree with you that it should've been shot that way--much more effective. I agree with all the points you make about the film. I personally expected much more. I did like the windshield wiper scene towards the end though. I thought it was a well-directed scene.

[Show spoiler]Meh. Story was bad, terrible script, bad acting due to terrible script, no chemistry between characters due to terrible script, and the thing that matters most in this movie.... the action.... was kinda lame. There were some pretty cool action parts, but for most part, they should have been a lot better. I really don't like the up close, shaky cam fight scenes where you can't quite see what's going on all the time, and this film was heavily laden with that technique, especially in the tunnel fight scene. The story was all over the place, from Statham's love interest... (and the forced basketball guys fight scene) to Dolph
[Show spoiler]leaving their crew to become a bad guy and try to kill them... then bein buddy buddy at the end.
I don't know... this film wasn't very well made and felt pretty rushed to me. Mickey Rourke was easily the best part of this film, and he hardly had any screen time

There were also a lot of "WTF, who wrote this?!" moments for me. Like Randy Couture's explanation of his cauliflower ear... that was pretty random. There were a lot of lines like that in this movie. And at the end of the
[Show spoiler]Sly/Stone Cold fight scene, Sly gets up and yells "come on!". It seemed like Sly was about to do something badass, but then he gets speared into the wall by the huge guy.... lol, what the hell?
And when Randy Couture
[Show spoiler]fought Stone Cold... I was expecting him to kill him by breaking his neck or somethin... nope, he pushed him into some fire. Then Stone Cold stood up as ridiculous cgi fire man... and then in slow mo, Randy jumped up and punched him in the face.
Seriously?

There a few badass parts that were lmao moments, like when Statham
[Show spoiler]gunned down the guys in the plane.
That was pretty funny, but Sly's plane left like 5 minutes before that... why was like half the army still chillin on the dock? They had like 6 trucks there! Another badass part was when
[Show spoiler]Terry was gunnin em down with the AA-12 in the tunnel
, that was hilarious! Also, I laughed my ass off at Dolph's cockroach lines

Arnold's cameo was pretty ridiculous. Going into this movie... I was thinkin that seeing Arnold on the big screen again would be a treat... but it was terrible lol. The dialogue in that entire scene was ridiculous, and Arnold's acting suffered because of it. This scene didn't feel like 2 old school cats with a history, it was just... odd. The
[Show spoiler]president joke
was kinda funny though.

Overall, being a Sly film this was a big letdown for me and I hope that the sequel is better.
I saw it today too. I agree with about half your post
[Show spoiler], adding the bad CG blood... and knife out of his chest at the end. The girlfriend subplot didn't bother me though. I liked it actually, because we really know nothing about any of these guys (although they could have made some effort to tie it in to the story). Plus, when he punches that guy's lights out, it just adds to the badassery of the movie. I noticed the shaky cam technique as well and I agree it was excessive, especially in the car chase scene with the bulletproof car.

My favorite part:

Throughout the first half of the end sequence, my friend kept asking me where the hell Terry Crews went because every actor was sharing the spotlight in that scene. That made his AA-12 entrance that much better. I was dying of laughter. Especially after the corridor shot.

It's an action film so I try not to be so harsh with criticism, though I understand your expectations, being a Stallone film. Try loosening up and give it another view. For example, I knew from the trailers that the plot was absolute sh!t so I didn't let it bother me. I went to see a testosterone fueled action flick, and most of their bad decisions didn't distract me from having a great time. I was hoping they'd explore Jet Li's abilities a bit more though.

Now the real test begins. The Criterions you've watched so far have been the "easy" ones (Yojimbo/Sanjuro/For All Mankind/M). Godard is a test, although this is much more straight forward than Pierrot Le Fou.

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

Film: 3 stars (out of 4)

Very short review. A good film, but doesn't approach other Bogart gems such as The African Queen and Casablanca (although I do prefer it to The Maltese Falcon). Worth seeing but a bit underwhelming.

I was actually thinkin about that after I reviewed it. I think that after seeing Avatar on bluray, my PQ standards went through the roof. I have to remember that everything isnt gonna look like Avatar and that other films will also deserve a perfect PQ rating as well. I think after further review Lovely Bones does deserve a perfect PQ score. Got Em!!

Yeah after looking at the trailer it looks very different but remember The Seventh Seal wasnt a straight forward movie and at times i found it a little hard to follow.

Maybe i should just question my own comprehension.

I totaly understand where you're coming from. After seeing avatar my standards also went up on PQ but i had to remind myself that i cant compare everything to Avatar because itsTechnicalities were on a whole different planet compared to other films.

The Expendables

Well all i have to say is its senseless entertainment with a couple of good laughs. I like how Sylvester tries to intensify action scenes with crazy camera angles and cool CGI but in all honesty some of the scenes and lines were straight crap. The best of the movie was when Mickey was on the screen, ohh Bruce Willis too. But besides that i thought he movie was so so. I probably wont be buying this when it hits the shelves.
