The trailer does have some additional detail but it is clear that this movie will not look like it was made yesterday. Which is weird because I thought Japan had all the best camera lenses

Part of it is style intended though with muted colours

Yep we definitely got a 1080p upscale at that time! Absolutely nothing was "HD" about it apart from the subtitles. Should have been recalled or something - why was there a DVD included? Just a reminder for us?

Anyone enjoying the latest Spaghetti Western boxset? I'm not familiar with any of these films. I received my copy today and watched the first title, "I Want Him Dead". Honest opinion, I thought it was really dull and forgettable. I know these films aren't top tier Spaghetti Westerns and I shouldn't expect too much but man, that was a chore to get through.

I received that set today, but I haven't watched a single movie from volume 2 yet. I mainly bought this one for Four of the Apocalypse.

I read positive things about that one on here, I'm sure or it may have been elsewhere, hoping for that to be good. I enjoyed Vengeance Is Mine and Matalo from the second set. Feels like Arrow could be scraping the barrel with some of these titles. I think they could have released maybe one really good set with all the better titles from each set.

A Pistol For Ringo, also an Arrow release is a really great, charming film. I was completely surprised by how much I enjoyed that one. I don't really expect much from Spaghetti's especially when they don't have one or more of the usual suspects in them, Van Cleef, Kinski, Nero, and so on (although that one did have Fernando Sancho). I don't tend to set my expectations too high, but I have struggled with a few of these films from these sets.

El Puro is considered a real hidden gem by a lot of us Spaghetti fans over on the Spaghetti Western Database forums. Obviously not gonna be on the same level as a Leone or Corbucci but it's pretty great! Four of the Apocalypse is great too. I haven't seen I Want Him Dead but it sounds pretty great. Although me and the other SWDB forum users are stumped as to why Arrow included Wrath of the Wind. It's hardly even a Western, let alone a Spaghetti Western.

Each set so far has had its odd-choice duffer - Blood Money had Find A Place To Die and Vengeance Trails had My Name Is Pecos (although I know some are rather fond of it, but it is objectively C or below). Wrath Of The Wind might be the worst one so far and I agree its inclusion is rather baffling when there must be plenty of others Arrow could have gone for. I've mentioned before about Aldo Florio's At The End Of The Rainbow/Dead Men Ride which is a fantastic spaghetti and seems to me like a plum choice for inclusion in one of these sets (admittedly I know nothing of its current rights situation, but that's just one example out of tens of other possible candidates).

I'm still waiting on a delivery date for Savage Guns from Amazon

For me the first set was pretty perfect as I love My Name is Pecos. Gave us a really nice mix of films with a Franco Nero and George Hilton starring Fulci film, the awesome Bandidos with the great Enrico Maria Salerno, Pecos which I personally think is a pretty great lower budget Spaghetti and of course God Said to Cain which is an awesome gothic take on a Western. A top tier set for someone getting into Spaghetti Westerns imo.

I didn't care for Find a Place to Die either, and there are so many other Spaghettis that it could've been changed out for. I also hadn't seen Matalo but I ended up hating it.

But god I would kill to have Dead Men Ride appear on one of these sets, such an awesome and annoyingly hard to find film. I'd also really like to see Sonny and Jed, Blood at Sundown (a.k.a $1,000 on the Black), Mannaja or A Bullet for a Stranger (a.k.a They Call Him Cemetery). All great flicks that haven't found their way to HD yet.

In for all three.

But I have to say, that new artwork for City of the Living Dead is probably the most ugly cover I have seen this year. I really like the non-exclusive artwork for The House by the Cemetery, so I am a bit baffled by this. Even more so by their decision NOT to do an Arte Original Exclusive. Those have been more or less standard for all their Italian classics the last couple of years, so why not now? City of the Living Dead even has one of, if not THE most iconic original artwork for any Fulci film. The mind boggles ...

All in all, it is hard not to get the impression that Arrow does not seem to do well, after some of their key staff left last years. Only three titles in a month, of which two are even upgrades, and the one new title is only released in US and nothing for their home market.

What little we still get of new UK titles (like the upcoming Coffin Joe box) all seem to have been acquired and planned back when their old staff was still in charge (Fran and co.).

Maybe I am totally wrong, but I cannot help feeling that Arrow is still stuck in the 2010s, very much like Scream! Factory, who also seem to focus most on upgrades and lost key staff this year. Personally, I still buy some of their releases. But most of my money is spend on releases from much smaller boutique labels, who know the market has changed to much more of a niche collectors' market and therefore prioritize good customer service and packing all their orders well.

Perhaps you're not a fan of Asian cinema but Shout has released nearly 100 Hong Kong and Japanese films during 2023. I believe all of these were new to HD in the U.S. market. They got my money for all of them.

I love Matalo and for me that was THE pick of that set, but I'm always very quick to acknowledge it's probably the most divisive spaghetti ever made. People either love it unequivocally or hate it, and it usually is a 50/50 split.

Buying Shout discs is a lottery, often they come looking like they have been dragged across concrete. Their quality control is so bad in fact that I consider their releases not to even exist, they won't get my money for any of them.

Yeah really not a fan of the custom art for City of the Living Dead, I'm actually pretty bummed that there isn't an arte originale release for this title, but I guess they technically did to an arte originale edition for their slipbox remastered version from a few years ago. Kinda wish they replicated that here as that seems to be Arrow's MO when upgrading those slipboxes to 4K (Robocop, Carrie, Django, Candyman, Hills Have Eyes, Waterworld, American Werewolf, etc.) I bought the arte version of House by the Cemetery (because the art on that one was way better as well) and now I won't have a COTLD UHD to match.

Either way, glad it's coming out and I'm curious to see what Arrow's restoration looks like as Cauldron had FiM encode their disc.

Guess I won the lottery then. I've watched over 60 Shout discs this year already and didn't have issues with any of them yet. This includes the first three Shaw Brothers box sets, The Ti Lung box, The Brave Archer box, The Sonny Chiba Vol 2 box, and some individual releases.
